In this paper, torsional split Hopkinson bar tests are conducted on this alloy with different sample dimensions. It is found that with the decreasing gauge length and thickness, the tested yield strength increases. However, the sample innerlouter diameter has little effect on the dynamic torsional behaviour. Based on the finite element method, the stress states in the alloy with different sample sizes are analysed. Due to the effect of stress concentration zone (SCZ), the shorter sample has a higher yield stress. Furthermore, the stress distributes more uniformly in the thinner sample, which leads to the higher tested yield stress. According to the experimental and simulation analysis, some suggestions on choosing the sample size are given as well.展开更多

The results indicated that there exists inhomogeneous distribution in HPT processed IF steel disks, giving lower hardness in the center and higher hardness in the edge regions. However, on the axisymmetrical section testing plane of the disks’ thickness direction, there is a soft zone near the surface of disks. Further results from radius testing plane of different depths from the surface of HPT processed disks show that the inhomogeneity rules of hardness distribution on the radius direction are similar to that on the thickness direction. Compared with the initial state, different stages of HPT (compression and compression + torsion) can both remarkably increase the hardness of IF steel disks. Microstructure investigation results can give a well support to verify the rules of hardness distribution, showing hardly no change of grains in center and sever plastic deformation in edge. The inhomogeneous distribution of stress and strain with the huge friction between anvil and disks in the process of HPT play an important role of hardness and microstructure distribution.展开更多

The TE and FE processes were successfully performed on AA1050 alloy samples at room temperature. To simulate the above mentioned processes, finite element analysis was carried out using the commercial elasto-plastic finite element analysis ABAQUS/Explicit Simulation. It is shown that load requirement for the TE process is lower than that for the FE process. The equivalent plastic strain calculated by the FEA proved that higher values of strain are imposed to the sample in the TE process. The strain distribution for the TE sample at the final stage of extrusion shows smoother strain gradient in comparison with the one produced by the FE process.展开更多
