The faults initiation time is constrained at the end of Middle Ordovician of about 460 Ma according to U-Pb dating of the fault cements and seismic interpretation.(2) The formation of the strike-slip faults was controlled by the near N-S direction stress field caused by far-field compression of the closing of the Proto-Tethys Ocean.(3) The faults localization and characteristics were influenced by the pre-existing structures of the NE trending weakening zones in the basement and lithofacies change from south to north.(4) Following the fault initiation under the Andersonian mechanism, the strike-slip fault growth was dominantly fault linkage, associated with fault tip propagation and interaction of non-Andersonian mechanisms.(5) Sequential slip accommodated deformation in the conjugate strike-slip fault interaction zones, strong localization of the main displacement and deformation occurred in the overlap zones in the northern Tarim, while the fault tips, particularly of narrow-deep grabens, and strike-slip segments in thrust zones accumulated more deformation and strain in the Central uplift. In conclusion, non-Andersonian mechanisms, dominantly fault linkage and interaction, resulted in the small displacement but long intraplate strike-slip fault development in the central Tarim Basin. The regional and localized field stress, and pre-existing structures and lithofacies difference had strong impacts on the diversity of the strike-slip faults in the Tarim cratonic basin.展开更多

Previous relocation studies suggested that these strong earthquakes had occurred along at least two parallel rupture zones. According to the relocated hypocenters and focal mechanisms of the events, we have constructed fault models for these seven earthquakes to calculate the Coulomb stress changes produced by each of these events. Furthermore, we extended our model calculations to include an ad- jacent 1996 Ms=6.9 Artushi earthquake, which occurred one year before the Jiashi earthquake swarm. Our calculations show that the Coulomb stress change caused by the preceding events was around 0.05 MPa at the hypocenter of the 4th event, and higher than 0.08 MPa at the hypocenters of the 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th events. Our results reveal a Coulomb stress interactive cycle of earthquake triggering between two adjacent normal and strike-slip faults.展开更多

The quiescence of the fault(last major temblor in 1854) and a lack of outcrop study have hampered stress analysis. Resolution of the stress states on the fault could be used for seismotectonic study along the North Tabriz fault and for understanding the geodynamics of the Arabia-Eurasia collision zone. Using fault-slip data collected from 88 localities in the fault system, we conducted an inversion analysis of this fault-slip data and analysis of the stratigraphic, geometric, and structural information. As a result, we confirmed that transcurrent deformation is prevalent on the North Tabriz fault and adjacent areas and is generally accomplished by predominant NW-SE-trending dextral and NE-SW-trending sinistral faults. Specifically, three separate tectonic episodes are recognised from the stress inversion data, consistent with the geologic data:(i) a post-Cretaceous and pre-Early Miocene compressional(Laramian) stress regime,(ii) an Early Miocene extensional stress regime, and(iii) modern tectonic episode with different local stress regimes(compressional and extensional) along the different segments of this fault.展开更多
