Seed clearing is a critical stage during precision seed metering process to ensure high seed singulation.However,there is a lack of understanding of the dynamics in the seed clearing process.In this study,a model was ...Seed clearing is a critical stage during precision seed metering process to ensure high seed singulation.However,there is a lack of understanding of the dynamics in the seed clearing process.In this study,a model was developed to predict initial seed clearing angle,in the seed clearing process using vector fields.The model was applied to an existing high-speed metering device and soybean seeds,and the model was evaluated with bench testing results.Results showed that dynamic changes in forces and constraints of seeds during the seed clearing process could be abstracted as vectors,and the changes of vector directions could be described by their phase angles.The phase angles were functions of the rotational angle of the seed meter.The phase angle of the constraint boundary linearly increases with the increase of the rotational angle.The phase angle of the force fluctuates,as the rotational angle changes.Initial seed clearing angle obtained from the phase angles varies from 8°to 59°,depending on the seeder travel speed.When comparing the values of the initial seed clearing angles predicted by the model with those from the bench tests,the root mean square error(RMSE)were from 2.73 to 3.14,and the correlation(r)between predict and observer were all higher than 0.98,indicating that the model had reasonably good accuracy.展开更多
This study investigated the feasibility of hyperspectral imaging techniques to estimate the vigor of heatdamaged Quercus variabilis seeds.Four thermal damage grades were classified according to heat treatment duration...This study investigated the feasibility of hyperspectral imaging techniques to estimate the vigor of heatdamaged Quercus variabilis seeds.Four thermal damage grades were classified according to heat treatment duration(0,2,5,and 10 h).After obtaining hyperspectral images with a 370–1042 nm hyperspectral imager that included visible and near infrared light,germination was tested to confirm estimates.The Savitzky–Golay(SG)second derivative was used to preprocess the spectrum to reduce any noise impact.The successive projections algorithm(SPA),principal component analysis,and local linear embedding algorithm were used to extract the characteristic spectral bands related to seed vigor.Finally,a model for seed vigor classifi-cation of Q.variabili s based on partial least squares support vector machine(LS-SVM)with different spectral data sets was developed.The results show that the spectrum after SG second derivative preprocessing was better for developing the model,and SPA performed the best among the three feature band selection methods.The combination SG second derivative-LS-SVM provided the best classification model for Q.variabilis seed vigor,with the prediction set reaching 98.81%.This study provides an important basis for rapid and nondestructive assessment of the vigor of heat-damaged seeds using hyperspectral imaging techniques.展开更多
Objective:To evaluate the potential efficacy of seed extracts of Annona squamosa and Annona muricata used as natural insecticides to control adult and larvae of the vectors Aedes albopictus and Culex quinquefasciatus ...Objective:To evaluate the potential efficacy of seed extracts of Annona squamosa and Annona muricata used as natural insecticides to control adult and larvae of the vectors Aedes albopictus and Culex quinquefasciatus under laboratory conditions.Methods:Aqueous and oil extracts of the two plants were prepared from dried seeds.Preliminary identifications of the chemical components of each seed extracts were performed using microreactional and GCP techniques.Larvae and adults of Aedes albopictus and Culex quinquefasciatus were collected from the breeding sites in coastal and highlands regions of Madagascar.WHO standardized tests of susceptibility for larvae and imaginal stage of mosquitoes were realized to determine mortality and LC_(50) of mosquitoes.Results:Chemical identifications showed that these extracts contain alkaloids and flavonoids compounds that probably confer their biological insecticidal proprieties.CPG analysis showed also the presence of various fatty acids.On adult mosquitoes,significant insecticidal effects were observed with both aqueous and oil extracts of the two plant seeds compared to mortality induced by deltamethrin,an insecticide used as reference.Extracts of Annona muricata induced high mortality rate to both species of mosquito compared to extracts of Annona squamosa at all concentrations tested.The LC_(50) of seed extracts ranged from 1%to 5%for adults and 0.5%to 1%for larvae.Conclusions:The seed extracts of these two plants may be used as mosquito controlling agents and offer a new approach to a less costly,practical and environmentally friendly control of vector borne diseases.展开更多
