Our results showed that a grid resolution in wall units with ?x^+=8.51, ?z^+= 4.26, ?y^+|_(min)= 0.0873 and ?y^+|_(max)= 3.89 is fine enough to simulate the problem at the present parameters. The streamwise length Lxand spanwise length Lzof the computational box have different impacts on the flow statistics, where the statistics were converged if Lxis longer than 8πh, while no converged results were obtained for different Lz. More importantly, our results with very long simulation time showed that a state transition would happen if L_x≥ 8πh, from a state with four pairs of roll cells to a state with three pairs of roll cells with L_z= 6πh. Each state could survive for more than 1500 h/U_w, and the flow statistics were different.展开更多

When the pump power reaches the mode-locked threshold, the metastable pulse train with a tunable repetition rate is obtained in the transition from the continuous wave state to the passive mode-locked state via proper adjustment of the polarization controller. A simpie model has been established to explain the experimental observation.展开更多

Linear elastic constitutive theory can be applied to determine earth pressure distribution along retaining walls under limited displacement condition. In addition, tangent modulus in Duncan-Chang nonlinear elastic model was introduced to reflect the variations of soil modulus with confining pressure, and boundary strains were derived from Rankine active earth pressure, Rankine passive earth pressure, static earth pressure and principal stress direction deflection.According to the above four boundary strains, earth pressure on retaining walls was divided into five state zones. By comparing the calculation results obtained from the equations proposed in this paper with those of experimental tests, the following conclusions can be drawn: earth pressure distribution was always nonlinear along retaining walls for translation displacement(T mode), rotation displacement around wall base(RB mode), and translation + rotation displacement around wall base(RBT mode). Also, calculated earth pressure distributions along with the depth of wall were found to be consistent with measured values under three displacement modes.Additionally, a parametric study was carried out to evaluate the effects of internal friction angle and backfill soil cohesion on earth pressure. It could be seen from the above series of studies that the earth pressure equations derived in this work could be well applied in practical engineering in designing retaining walls.展开更多

Since most thrust earthquakes occur on faults with dip angles of about 30 degrees, it is enigmatic why the Wenchuan earthquake occurred on such a steep fault. In this study we use a simple finite element model to investigate how the stress state in the fault changes with the variation of Poisson's ratio. The results show that, with the Poisson's ratio in the fault increasing, the magnitudes of the principal stresses increase and the maximum Shear stress decrease, and, especially, the angle between the maximum principal stress and the fault plane decreases, which will enhance the driving force to overcome the frictional resistance on the fault. The increase of Poisson's ratio in the fault may be an important factor to affect the occurrence of the fault earthquakes with large angles between maximum principal stress and fault plane.展开更多

An optimal approach in the sense of minimal error limit is proposed, in which a variable set of angular frequency is properly chosen and the least square inversion is then applied. Our approximate method contains an iteration with generalized matrix inverses, processing the tomographic integral of the time-dependent molecular-axis distribution in a polar angle. As shown in a simulated example for an alignment state, the density matrix is determined in a high fidelity. An analytic tomographic formula is also derived for the symmetric top rotation. The state coherent in the quantum space of both the angular momentum and its magnetic projection can be approximately retrieved from the observable time-resolved solid-angle distribution of the molecular axis.展开更多

The motivation of this work is the Shultz’s theorem which states that a C~*-algebra can be identified with its pure state space carrying w~*-topology and certain geometric structure.展开更多

The breakdown of this equipment results in economic wastes and leads to dangerous situations. To avoid such problems is very important, and it can be done through tools that inform about the existence of faults, as well as, about their progress in time. A review of the modeling process used for rotor-support-structure shows that the finite element method is the maj or method employed. In this paper, with the aid of well defined theoretical models, obtained using the finite element technique, and the state observer method for the identification and location of faults, it is possible to monitor the parameters of a rotor-support-structure system, including the foundation effects. In order to improve safety, these parameters must be supervised in case of the occurrence of failures or faults. The state observers are designed using Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). Finally, experimental results (using for this a rotation system in the mechanical vibrations laboratory at Ilha Solteira's Mechanical Engineering Department) demonstrate the effectiveness of the methodology developed.展开更多

The data is collected continuously and the survey design is structured in such a way asto provide quarterly estimates. These quarterly estimates are published each month as ‘rollingquarterly’ estimates. Currently the Office for National Statistics (ONS) publish rolling quarterlyestimates, and these have been assessed to be of sufficient quality to be badged as ‘NationalStatistics’. ONS also publish monthly estimates of a selection of labour force variables, but theseare designated ‘Experimental Statistics’ due to concerns over the quality of these data. Due to thesample design of the LFS, monthly estimates of change are volatile as there is no sample overlap.A state space model can be used to develop improved estimates of monthly change, accountingfor aspects of the survey design. An additional source of information related to unemployment isadministrative data on the number of people claiming unemployment related benefits. This datais more timely than survey data collected in the LFS and can be used to provide early estimatesof monthly unemployment.展开更多
