The purpose of this study is to investigate the acceleration of recession. By taking UG1 as an example, we analyze the generic mechanisms of acceleration of shrinkage of continental mountain glaciers. The results indicate that the acceleration of mass loss of UG1 commenced first in 1985 and second in 1996 and that the lat- ter was more vigorous. The air temperature rises during melting season, the ice temperature augment of the glacier and the albedo reduction on the glacier surface are considered responsible for the accelerated recession. In addition, the simulations of the accelerated shrinkage of UG1 are introduced in this article.展开更多
AIM:To evaluate the functional and aesthetic outcomes of upper eyelid cicatricial entropion(UCE) correction using anterior lamellar recession(ALR) with addressing the associated conditions including dermatochalas...AIM:To evaluate the functional and aesthetic outcomes of upper eyelid cicatricial entropion(UCE) correction using anterior lamellar recession(ALR) with addressing the associated conditions including dermatochalasis,brow ptosis,blepharoptosis,and lid retraction.METHODS:Chart review of patients with upper lid cicatricial entropion who had undergone ALR from 2013 to 2016 was reviewed.Success was defi ned as the lack of any lash in contact with the globe,no need for a second procedure,and acceptable cosmesis at the fi nal follow up.RESULTS:Sixty eight patients(97 eyelids) were operated by ALR with simultaneous correction of associated lid problems in each case when necessary.The mean followup time was 17.8 mo(range,6.0-24.0 mo).Concomitantly,levator tucking was performed in 19 eyelids(19.6%),upper lid retractor recession in 18 eyelids(18.6%),and internal browpexy in 31 eyelids(32.0%).In 95.8% of patients(95%CI:0.85-0.96),satisfactory functional and cosmetic outcome was achieved with a single surgical procedure.CONCLUSION:Based on the principles of lamellar recession and concurrently addressing the associated lid problems,this approach is an effective and safe treatment of UCE.展开更多
The COVID-19 pandemic broke out at a time when there were heightened uncertainties in the global economy.Understanding these uncertainties provides an important background for analyzing the impact of the pandemic on t...The COVID-19 pandemic broke out at a time when there were heightened uncertainties in the global economy.Understanding these uncertainties provides an important background for analyzing the impact of the pandemic on the global economy,assessing the effectiveness of policy measures in combating the pandemic and reviving the global economy,and predicting the trajectory of the economic recovery in the post-pandemic era.We analyze how COVID-19 would likely deepen an existing malaises in the global economy,and what could be done to address these problems while managing the economic recovery.We argue that three fundamental factors that could lead to a solid recovery in the post pandemic era are structural reform,new technology and re-integration.They could be managed by instituting a new"global social contract."Supported by strong public policies at all levels,especially at national level,these three factors could bring about the salvation of the global economy as it recovers or re-emerges from the pandemic crisis.展开更多
The demographic dividend, that is, the growth of the working age population aged 16years relative to younger and older age dependents, has often been cited as a crucial component of the accelerated economic growth exp...The demographic dividend, that is, the growth of the working age population aged 16years relative to younger and older age dependents, has often been cited as a crucial component of the accelerated economic growth experienced by disparate countries and regions at different points in time. Generally less emphasized are the ramifications of this proeess when it occurs in reverse; that is, when the relative size of the working age population begins to shrink. Related to this is the more subtle effect of changes to the age structure of the overall working age population, which can have compounding or offsetting effects in relation to the demographic dividend noted above. This paper explores how these age-related phenomena were instrumental to both the Great Depression and the Great Recession of 2008. We explore how the generational eomposition of economic actors and the aging of the baby-boom worker may have played a role in provoking these remarkable recessionary periods. The reversal of the demographic dividend and the aging of the working age population are factors now contributing to the propagation of the global economic downturn, as witnessed in the example of Japan over the past half-century. This paper applies the lessons of the Great Depression, the Great Recession and Japan to offer a forward-looking analysis of the Chinese economy. China is on the precipiee of a significant demographic shift whose implications for economic growth are explored.展开更多
AIM: To describe the clinical features of congenital double elevator palsy(CDEP) and to evaluate various surgical outcomes between the standard Knapp and augmented Knapp procedures, based on improvements in primary...AIM: To describe the clinical features of congenital double elevator palsy(CDEP) and to evaluate various surgical outcomes between the standard Knapp and augmented Knapp procedures, based on improvements in primary eye position and ocular motility.METHODS: Twenty-two patients with CDEP at Shanghai Children's Hospital were enrolled from July 2014 to January 2018. The forced duction test(FDT) was negative in 21 patients, aged 8 mo to 12 y(mean 5.4 y). Patients were divided into two treatment groups: 16 patients underwent the standard Knapp procedure(group A), with or without horizontal squint procedure; and 5 patients underwent the augmented Knapp procedure(Foster procedure; group B). One patient underwent inferior rectus recession in the affected eye and superior rectus recession in the sound eye because of a positive FDT. The pre-and postoperative vertical deviations in the primary position and ocular motility were compared in the two groups.RESULTS: Twenty-one eyes of the 22 patients(95%) were aligned within 10 prism diopters(PD), and all patients(100%) reached ≥25% elevation improvement after surgery. The average corrected vertical deviation in group B was statistically better than that of group A. For group A, the vertical deviation in the primary position decreased from 24.75Δ±8.35Δ to 4.56Δ±8.07Δ after surgery, for an improvement of 23.06Δ±6.51Δ(P〈0.05). In group B, the decrease was from 35.00Δ±5.00Δ(range 30Δ-40Δ) to 1.00Δ±2.24Δ, for an improvement of 34.00Δ±4.18Δ(P〈0.05). There were significant differences between the pre-and postoperative elevation in each group(group A, P〈0.05; group B, P〈0.05). The average scale of improved elevation in group B(1.80±0.45) was not significantly better than that of group A(1.69±0.87; Z=-0.732, P=0.548).
