Methods: Thirty healthy adults (24.1 ± 2.0 years) with normal occlusion performed gum chewing exercise 3 times daily for 3 months. Each exercise session lasted 5 min and involved alternating of chewing 10 times using the left molars and then 10 times using the right molars, with the mouth closed. The effect of the exercise on oral function was evaluated by measuring tongue pressure (TP), cheek pressure (CP), and labial closure strength (LCS) immediately before starting exercise, at 2 weeks and 1, 2, and 3 months after starting exercise, and at 3 months after cessation of exercise. Changes in TP, CP, and LCS according to sex and duration of exercise were analyzed by repeated two-way ANOVA. Results: Measurements for all muscles were significantly greater in men than in women at all time points. After starting exercise, TP was markedly increased at 2 months in men and women, and both CP and LCS were markedly increased at 2 weeks in men and at 1 month in women. These effects persisted for 3 months. Three months after cessation of exercise, TP, CP, and LCS tended to decrease, but were not significantly attenuated as compared with 3 months after beginning of exercise in either sex. Conclusion: The results of this study revealed that gum chewing exercise contributed to an improvement in perioral muscle strength, and that this effect was maintained for at least 3 months after discontinuation of exercise.展开更多

We report a young female patient with coital and voiding difficulty. The patient was a 22-year-old woman presented with voiding difficulty and inability to achieve sexual intercourse. Clinical examination revealed normally developed labia majora, clitoris, and vaginal opening, but fused labia minora and pinhole external urethral orifice. Intraoperatively, labial fusion was dissected with sharp dissection. Urethral dilatation was performed with dittel dilators. Local estrogen ointment was administered postoperatively for four weeks resulting with complete resolution of coital and voiding symptoms.展开更多

This condition is typically seen in pre-pubertal girls;however, there have been cases reported in the literature of labial agglutination in postmenopausal and reproductive aged women. Labial agglutination has been associated with local irritation and inflammation in the setting of a hypoestrogenic state. Topical treatment is usually recommended prior to manual separation. However, some postmenopausal women have been refractory to conservative management, and surgery may then be required. We present a case of a 79-year-old Caucasian gravida 3 para 3 who was referred for treatment refractory labial agglutination for 3 years. The patient’s complaints included a small trickle escaping from the introitus during urination and the sensation of little urinary control. The patient underwent an exam under anesthesia. Gentle blunt dissection with a lacrimal dilator easily separated the labia minora down the visible midline fusion line (raphe). Bimanual exam then revealed a 12-week-sized enlarged uterus confirmed on ultrasound to be an 8 × 8 × 7 cm irregular mass concerning for uterine cancer. Proceeding to an operative release of severe labial agglutination can relieve patient discomfort and frustration when estradiol therapy has failed. In addition to alleviating symptoms, releasing labial agglutination can also provide the gynecologist access to critical screening procedures such as cervical cytology or a bimanual exam, all of which could lead to a diagnosis or pre-cancerous or cancerous lesions.展开更多

In this study we describe the ultrastructure, number, and distribution of sensilla on the labium apex of the chinch bug, Blissus leucopterus leucopterus. Each apical field of sensilla on the labium contains 11 uniporous peg sensilla and one sensillum chaeticum. The uniporous peg sensilla are innervated by 4-5 bipolar neurons that send dendrites in the lumen of each peg. Three neurons are associated with each sensillum chaeticum, two neurons have dendrites in the lumen of the sensillum, and the third dendrite ends in a tubular body at the base of the sensillum. Behavioral tests that involve chemical blockage of the sensory receptors show the importance of the labial sensilla in feeding behavior. Both morphological and behavioral evidence indicate that the labial sensilla have a chemosensitive function.展开更多

Of them, the lip biopsy and tear β2-M level were examined and overall studied. In bumblebees, so- cial parasitism appeared in at least 3 subgenera independently: in the subgenus Psithyrus consisting entirely of parasitic species, in the subgenus Alpinobombus with Bombus hy- perboreus, and in the subgenus Thoracobombus with B. inexspectatus. Cuckoo bumblebee males utilize species-specific cephalic labial gland secretions for mating purposes that can impact their inquiline strategy. We performed cephalic labial gland secretions in B. hyperboreus, B. inexspectatus and their hosts. Males of both parasitic species exhibited high species specific levels of cephalic gland secretions, including different main com- pounds. Our results showed no chemical mimicry in the cephalic gland secretions between inquilines and their host and we did not identify the repellent compounds already known in other cuckoo bumblebees.展开更多

Methods In this study, dried samples of freshly produced saliva from 78 patients with established SS according to European Community criteria and 80 healthy controls were examined by light microscopy. The crystallization was classified into 4 types according to the ferning phenomenon: uniformity, branching, spreading and integrity (type I normal and type Ⅱ,Ⅲ,Ⅳ abnormal ). Then, the 78 patients underwent lebial salivary gland biopsy. According to Tarpley’s classifica- tion, minor salivary gland biopsy (≥2 + ) was considered to be positive . Results 1. The sensitivity of SFT was high (70/ 78 = 89. 74% ). And the specificity wes also high (67/80 = 83. 75% ). 2. Abnormal SFT was observed in 70/78 (89. 74% ) samples from patients group and in 13 /80 (16. 25% ) samples from healthy controls. The differences of SFT in patients group versus controls were statistically significant (P< 0. 01 ). 3. The sensitivity of SFT and mini labial gland biopsy had no significant differences (P > 0. 05) as diagnostic tests in SS. Conclusion SFT was simple, sensitive and specific as diagnostic test in SS suspect patients just as mini labial gland biopsy.展开更多

We retrospectively included 123 children with labial adhesions.Variables were collected, including treatment outcomes, conjugated estrogen usage, and dosage, whether it was combined with manual or surgical separation, whether to use erythromycin, and whether to be accompanied with vulvitis. Chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test, and t-test were used to analyze the correlation between influencing factors and treatment outcome in univariate analysis. We used logistic regression analysis to explore the key influencing factors. The use of conjugated estrogen in combination with manual or surgical separation(P = 0.001), and the degree of labial adhesions(P = 0.011) had significant effects on the final treatment outcome. The frequency of conjugated estrogen treatment, whether erythromycin was used in combination during treatment, and whether the children were accompanied by vulvitis had no significant effect on the treatment outcome(P > 0.05). After the logistic regression,we found that whether it was combined with manual or surgical separation(P = 0.000, OR = 0.078, 95% CI = 0.030–0.203), and the degree of labial adhesions in children(P = 0.003, OR = 5.324, 95% CI = 1.767–16.041) were independently related to the effect of conjugated estrogen treatment. The therapeutic effect of conjugated estrogen alone was better for mild adhesion. However, severe adhesions need to consider with manual or surgical separation in combination with conjugated estrogen treatment. It is not recommended to combine erythromycin with routine clinical treatment. Conjugated estrogen once a day can also achieve a good therapeutic effect.展开更多
