An accelerator-driven subcritical system(ADS) project was launched in China in 2011, aiming to design and build an ADS demonstration facility with the capability of more than 1000 MW thermal power. The driver linac is defined to be a 10 m A current of high energy protons at 1.5 Ge V in continuous wave operation mode. To meet the extremely high power and intense beam accelerator requirements, non-interceptive monitors for the beam transverse profile are required for this proton linac. Taking advantage of the residual gas as active material, the Beam Induced Fluorescence(BIF) monitor exploits gas-excited fluorescence in the visible spectrum region for transverse profile measurements. The advantages of this non-intercepting method are that nothing is installed in the vacuum pipe,component design is compact and there is no need for expensive signal processing electronics. Beam experiments have been performed under constant beam conditions. The helium spectrum has been verified with different optical filters, showing that a proper optical band-pass filter covering 400–500 nm is necessary for fluorescence experiments with helium. By changing gas pressure, it is shown that gas pressure is proportional to the signal amplitude but has no influence on detected profile width. Finally, a comparison experiment between the BIF monitor and a wire scanner shows that the detected profile width results of both methods agree well. 展开更多

Compressing all the energy of a laser pulse into a spatiotemporal focal cube edged by the laser center wavelength will realize the highest intensity of an ultra-intense ultrashort laser,which is called theλ^(3) regime or theλ^(3) laser.Herein,we introduced a rotational hyperbolic mirror—an important rotational conic section mirror with two foci—that is used as a secondary focusing mirror after a rotational parabolic mirror to reduce the focal spot size from several wavelengths to a single wavelength by significantly increasing the focusing angular aperture.Compared with the rotational ellipsoidal mirror,the first focal spot with a high intensity,as well as some unwanted strong-field effects,is avoided.The optimal focusing condition of this method is presented and the enhanced tight focusing for a femtosecond petawatt laser and theλ3 laser is numerically simulated,which can enhance the focused intensities of ultra-intense ultrashort lasers for laser physics. 展开更多

This paper provides a review of the compact intense electron-beam accelerators (IEBAs) based on liquid pulse forming lines (PFLs) that havebeen developed at the National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) in China. The history and roadmap of the compact IEBAs used todrive high-power microwave (HPM) devices at NUDT are reviewed. The properties of both de-ionized water and glycerin as energy storagemedia are presented. Research into the breakdown properties of liquid dielectrics and the desire to maximize energy storage have resulted in theinvention of several coaxial PFLs with different electromagnetic structures, which are detailed in this paper. These high energy density liquidPFLs have been used to increase the performance of IEBA subsystems, based on which the SPARK (Single Pulse Accelerator with spark gaps)and HEART (High Energy-density Accelerator with Repetitive Transformer) series of IEBAs were constructed. This paper also discusses howthese compact IEBAs have been used to drive typical HPM devices and concludes by summarizing the associated achievements and theconclusions that can be drawn from the results. 展开更多

Up to third-order temporal correction in terms of a small dimensionless temporal parameter ε=1/(ωoto) (ω0=ck0 the central oscillatory frequency, to the pulse duration of half period), the field expressions of ultra-short focused laser pulses are explicitly presented. To evaluate the correction efficacy, electric amplitudes of zeroth-order and higher-order corrected fields are compared for different pulse durations. Furthermore, electron interaction with ultra-short laser pulses is simulated using both the zeroth-order and higher-order corrected field equations. Our simulation results show that the third-order correction terms should be considered for investigating the interaction if the laser pulse duration decreases to a few optical periods. 展开更多

Effects of anode material on the evolution of anode plasma and characteristics of intense electron beam diode

In this paper,three kinds of materials including graphite,titanium(Ti)and molybdenum(Mo)are used as anodes to figure out the influence factors of anode material on the characteristics of the intense electron beam diode.The results show that the characteristics of diode are mainly determined by the cathode plasma motion under a 15 mm diode gap,in which the typical electron beam parameters are 280 kV,3.5 kA.When the diode gap is reduced to 5 mm,the voltage of the electron beam reduces to about 200 kV,and its current increases to more than 8.2 kA.It is calculated that the surface temperatures of Ti and Mo anodes are higher than their melting points.The diode plasma luminescence images show that Ti and Mo anodes produce plasmas soon after the bombardment of electron beams.Ti and Mo lines are respectively found in the plasma composition of Ti and Mo anode diodes.Surface melting traces are also observed on Ti and Mo anodes by comparing the micromorphologies before and after bombardment of the electron beam.These results suggest that the time of anode plasma generation is closely related to the anode material.Compared with graphite,metal Ti and Mo anodes are more likely to produce large amounts of plasma due to their more significant temperature rise effect.According to the moment that anode plasma begins to generate,the average expansion velocities of cathode and anode plasma are estimated by fitting the improved space-charge limited flow model.This reveals that generation and motion of the anode plasma significantly affect the characteristics of intense electron beam diode. 展开更多

The High Energy Photon Source(HEPS)is a 6 GeV diffraction-limited storage ring light source under construction.The swap-out injection is adopted with the depleted bunch recycled via high-energy accumulation in the booster.The extremely high beam energy density of the bunches with an ultra-low emittance(about 30 pm horizontally and 3 pm vertically)and high bunch charges(from 1.33 to 14.4 nC)extracted from the storage ring could cause hazardous damage to the extraction Lambertson magnet in case of extraction kicker failure.To this end,we proposed the use of a pre-kicker to spoil the bunches prior to extraction,significantly reducing the maximum beam energy density down to within a safe region while still maintaining highly efficient extractions.The main parameters of the pre-kicker are simulated and discussed. 展开更多

The collective interaction between intense ion beams and plasmas is studied by simulations and experiments,where an intense proton beam produced by a short pulse laser is injected into a pre-ionized gas.It is found that,depending on its current density,collective effects can significantly alter the propagated ion beam and the stopping power.The quantitative agreement that is found between theories and experiments constitutes the first validation of the collective interaction theory.The effects in the interaction between intense ion beams and background gas plasmas are of importance for the design of laser fusion reactors as well as for beam physics. 展开更多

The hydrodynamic effects of molten surface of titanium alloy on the morphology evolution by intense pulsed ion beam (IPIB) irradiation are studied. It is experimentally revealed that under irradiation of IPIB pulses, the surface morphology of titanium alloy in a spatial scale of μm exhibits an obvious smoothening trend. The mechanism of this phenomenon is explained by the mass transfer caused by the surface tension of molten metal. Hydrodynamic simulation with a combination of the finite element method and the level set method reveals that the change in curvature on the molten surface leads to uneven distribution of surface tension. Mass transfer is caused by the relief of surface tension, and meanwhile a flattening trend in the surface morphology evolution is achieved. 展开更多
