Vortex solitons with a ring vortex core residing in a single lattice site in the semi-infinite gap of square optical lattices are reported. These solitons are no longer bound states of the Bloch-wave unit (Bloch-wave distribution in one lattice site) at the band edge of the periodic lattice, and consequently they do not bifurcate from the corresponding band edge. For saturable nonlinearity, one family of such solitons is found, and its existing curve forms a closed loop, which is very surprising. Bose-Einstein condensate(BEC)exhibits a variety of fascinating and unexpected macroscopic phenomena,and has attracted sustained attention in recent years-particularly in the field of solitons and associated nonlinear phenomena.Meanwhile,optical lattices have emerged as a versatile toolbox for understanding the properties and controlling the dynamics of BEC,among which the realization of bright gap solitons is an iconic result.However,the dark gap solitons are still experimentally unproven,and their properties in more than one dimension remain unknown.In light of this,we describe,numerically and theoretically,the formation and stability properties of gap-type dark localized modes in the context of ultracold atoms trapped in optical lattices.Two kinds of stable dark localized modes-gap solitons and soliton clusters-are predicted in both the one-and two-dimensional geometries.The vortical counterparts of both modes are also constructed in two dimensions.A unique feature is the existence of a nonlinear Bloch-wave background on which all above gap modes are situated.By employing linear-stability analysis and direct simulations,stability regions of the predicted modes are obtained.Our results offer the possibility of observing dark gap localized structures with cutting-edge techniques in ultracold atoms experiments and beyond,including in optics with photonic crystals and lattices. 展开更多

In this superlattice, the real and imaginary parts are both in the form of superlattices with dual periods. In the self-focusing nonlinearity, PT solitons can exist in the semi-infinite gap. However, only those gap solitons with low powers can propagate stably, whereas the high-power solitons present periodic oscillation and simultane- ously suffer energy decay. In the self-defocusing nonlinearity, PT solitons only exist in the first gap and all these solitons are stable. 展开更多

The formation of photogeneration gratings in optical fiber by sustained exposure of the core to the interference pattern produced by oppositely propagating modes of argon-ion laser radiation was first reported in 1978. One important nonlinear application of fiber Bragg grating is grating solitons, including gap soliton and Bragg soliton. This paper summarily introduces the numerous theoretical and experimental results on this field, each indicating the potential these solitons have in all-optical switching, pulse compression, limiting, and logic operations, and especially important for the optical communication systems. 展开更多

Slowly moving matter-wave gap soliton propagation in weak random nonlinear potential

We systematically investigate the motion of slowly moving matter wave gap solitons in a nonlinear potential, produced by the weak random spatial variation of the atomic scattering length. With the weak randomness, we construct an effective-particle theory to study the motion of gap solitons. Based on the effective-particle theory, the effect of the randomness on gap solitons is obtained, and the motion of gap solitons is finally solved. Moreover, the analytic results for the general behaviours of gap soliton motion, such as the ensemble-average speed and the reflection probability depending on the weak randomness are obtained. We find that with the increase of the random strength the ensemble-average speed of gap solitons decreases slowly where the reduction is proportional to the variance of the weak randomness, and the reflection probability becomes larger. The theoretical results are in good agreement with the numerical simulations based on the Cross-Pitaevskii equation. 展开更多

We investigate the existence and dynamical stability of multipole gap solitons in Bose-Einstein condensate loaded in a deformed honeycomb optical lattice.Honeycomb lattices possess a unique band structure,the first and second bands intersect at a set of so-called Dirac points.Deformation can result in the merging and disappearance of the Dirac points,and support the gap solitons.We find that the two-dimensional honeycomb optical lattices admit multipole gap solitons.These multipoles can have their bright solitary structures being in-phase or out-of-phase.We also investigate the linear stabilities and nonlinear stabilities of these gap solitons.These results have applications of the localized structures in nonlinear optics,and may helpful for exploiting topological properties of a deformed lattice. 展开更多

The interaction of in-band and in-gap lattice soliton trains in optically induced two-dimensional photonic lattices

We demonstrate the coherent interactions of lattice soliton trains, including in-band solitons (IBSs) and gap soliton trains (GSTs), in optically induced two-dimensional photonic lattices with self-defocusing nonlinearity. It is revealed that the π-staggered phase structures of the lattice soliton trains will lead to anomalous interactions. Solely by changing their initial separations, the transition between attractive and repulsive interaction forces or reversion of the energy transfer can be obtained. The ‘negative refraction' effect of the soliton trains on the interaction is also discussed. Moreover, two interacting IBSs can merge into one GST when attraction or energy transfer happens. 展开更多

We investigate the existence and stability of surface defect gap solitons at an interface between a defect in a two-dimensional optical lattice and a uniform saturable Kerr nonlinear medium. The surface defect embedded in the two-dimensional optical lattice gives rise to some unique properties. It is interestingly found that for the negative defect, stable surface defect gap solitons can exist both in the semi-infinite gap and in the first gap. The deeper the negative defect, the narrower the stable region in the semi-infinite gap will be. For a positive defect, the surface defect gap solitons exist only in the semi-infinite gap and the stable region localizes in a low power region. 展开更多
