Conventionally, this technique is used to treat the mixed soil of a site without considering the diversity and treatability of different soils within the site. A laboratory test was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of mechanical soil aeration for remediating soils of different textures(silty, clayey, and sandy soils) along a vertical profile at an abandoned chloro-alkali chemical site in China. The collected soils were artificially contaminated with chloroform(TCM) and trichloroethylene(TCE). Mechanical soil aeration was effective for remediating VCHs(removal efficiency 〉 98%). The volatilization process was described by an exponential kinetic function. In the early stage of treatment(0–7 hr), rapid contaminant volatilization followed a pseudofirst order kinetic model. VCH concentrations decreased to low levels and showed a tailing phenomenon with very slow contaminant release after 8 hr. Compared with silty and sandy soils, clayey soil has high organic-matter content, a large specific surface area, a high clay fraction, and a complex pore structure. These characteristics substantially influenced the removal process, making it less efficient, more time consuming, and consequently more expensive. Our findings provide a potential basis for optimizing soil remediation strategy in a cost-effective manner.

Experiments were conducted in order to characterize the relative roles of resuspended particles and pore water under different flow and sediment conditions. A conservative tracer (NaC1) and a reactive tracer (phosphate) were used as contaminants in the bottom sediment in a laboratory flume. The mixing between the overlying water and pore water occurred over a short time while the desorption of contaminants from fine-grained resuspended particles lasted a relatively long time. The effects of resuspended particles and pore water on the variations of release flux and concentration of contaminants in water with time under different hydrodynamic conditions were quantified. The results show that pore water dominated the initial release flux, which could be several orders of magnitude greater than the flux due to molecular diffusion. Flux contribution of desorption from sediment particles in the latter release could be equal to what was seen from pore water in the initial stage.

After samples of natural contaminant particles were collected from insulator surfaces in China, it was found that the particle diameter distribution (PDD) was mainly concentrated in the 5-50 μm range. To analyze the statistical characteristics of these particles, this work studies the physical processes of particle collision and adhesion using the theories of hydrodynamics and collision dynamics. The physical model considers coupling of the fluid field and the electric field, introduces an adhesion criterion, and establishes a particle and surface collision model. The effects of relative humidity, wind speed, aerodynamic shape, electric field type, and electric field strength on particle adhesion were analyzed. The results show that the relative humidity and wind speed have very significant effects and the influences of the electric field type and the electric field strength are obvious, but the in fluence of the aerodynamic shape is relatively weak. The simulation results support the statistical characteristics determined in this work. The physical model established here provides reference values for study of the adhesion characteristics of particles on surfaces under electric fields.
