This paper systematically reviews the current typical innovation paradigms worldwide and their shortcomings.Based on eastern wisdom and best innovation practices, this paper introduces a new paradigm of innovation, holistic innovation(HI).It provides a definition and theoretical framework for HI,discusses its connotations, and summarizes the theoretical contribution and policy implications.HI is total and collaborative innovation driven by strategic vision. This new innovation paradigm is a complex of strategic innovation, collaborative innovation, total innovation, and open innovation, which reflects wisdom from the Chinese context and Eastern culture. The four core elements of holistic innovation,“strategic,”“total,”“open,”and“collaborative,”are inter-related with an organic integration with the helix of HI.HI is an original innovation paradigm that conforms to the needs of firms'technological innovation management in the strategic innovation era and supports the implementation of the Innovation-Driven Development Strategy. It also helps China's enterprises build global innovation leadership and improves national innovation ability. Finally,it optimizes the innovation policy design and action mindset to achieve global peace and sustainable development. 展开更多

The focus of scholars studying user innovation has been restricted to the interaction between companies and individual users, and how companies can unilaterally exploit values from the value chain between companies and users. We argue that the value chain between the user and manufacturer should be a bilateral value chain in which both the user and manufacturer can conduct their own innovations and provide greater value to the whole value chain. In this paper, using examples from China's civil-military integration project,we took a step forward to apply the user innovation theory in the explanation of inter-sector technological value transfer. The main theoretical contribution of this paper is the expansion of the scope of application of the user innovation theory to inter-sector level research.Studying cases from China's civil-military integration project,we found that the concepts of user and innovator become blurred when we study the phenomenon across time. When we go beyond individual user and manufacturer and shift the focus of our discussion to the level of inter-sector technological value transfer,we will find that it is possible for organizational agents at large to be both users and innovators of technology. 展开更多

High tech organizations confront dual demands of exploration and exploitation, particularly in today’s competitive environment marked by a trend of volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity.Although there is general consensus about the relationship between ambidexterity and firm performance, few studies have probed into the mechanism of how it is applied in the strategic management process.Considering the premise of environmental change, this research considers a multilevel perspective on the nature of organizational ambidexterity and its functioning in the whole strategic management process.Through a comparative case study of the two most famous high tech companies in China,a model is provided to reflect the functioning of organizational ambidexterity where a cognitive pattern of top management teamsplays a critical role in the ability that the organizations demonstrate. This research also contributes to the literature of entrepreneurship by extending innovation from a demand-side perspective, where the core of product/market exploration/exploitation activities could be expanded into customer value creation.Undertaking a careful analysis of the mechanism of organizational ambidexterity, this research sheds new light on the literature of strategic management that operates in a more turbulent environment. 展开更多

Environmental, social, and governance(ESG)performance, along with the novelty of innovation, are significant factors in promoting sustainable development for corporations. This study employs the Heckman two-stage model to examine the impact of ESG performance on innovation novelty using a dataset comprising A-share listed companies in the Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Ex-changes from 2011 to 2020.The results indicate that enhanced ESG performance significantly fosters innovation by expanding innovation resources and mitigating agency problems.Further analysis reveals that this relationship is more pronounced under high economic policy uncer-tainty,a challenging information environment, elevated financing constraints, and in the context of digital transformation. This study not only expands the research on the economic implications of ESG performance for enterprise innovation behavior but also places a distinct emphasis on innovation quality rather than quantity.Additionally, this study enriches the existing literature on the factors influencing innovation novelty and extends research into the link between envi-ronmental protection and firm innovation, particularly from the perspective of stakeholder the-ory.Furthermore,this study holds practical significance for governments aiming to enhance ESG evaluation systems and establish guiding policies that encourage novel innovations, ultimately contributing to sustainable and high-quality development.Simultaneously, this study provides guidance to enterprises by encouraging them to embrace green development, improve social responsibility, and elevate their governance standards to promote innovation quality. 展开更多

A key goal of knowledge management(KM)is to foster innovation through the ceation of new knowledge.Surprisingly, there is little research on KM in the context of entrepre-neurship,a domain where innovation is considered essential. This paper extends estab-lished theories and frameworks for KM to the understudied context of KM in small and medium entrepreneurial firms, particularly young startups.Translating KM fr ameworks, such as the widely studied SECI model, into the entrepreneurial domain could eventually help startups in their quest for sustainability and growth. The SECI model is an aspir ational process with which to build new knowledge, including the explicit knowledge assets that startups commonly lack. However,an aspiration is only useful if the subject knows where he or she stands in relation to it.This study focuses on understanding whether entre-preneurial activities embed into, and can further enable,the"virtuous"knowledge-creation cycle. The secondary objective of this paper is to acknowledge Ikujiro Nonaka's contribution to western and eastern KM theories, and extend his seminal theories into other domains, such as small and medium enterprises. This work pilots the use of a content analysis technique largely used in psychology to analyze the connection between entrepreneurship and KM.With this method, the study highlights how the four phases of the SECI model apply to startup firms in a business incubator in the United States. It provides insights into the knowledge-creation process of entrepreneurs, and suggests how entrepreneurs can improve startup survival through greater awareness and use of KM in their business planning and operational activities. 展开更多

The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of third-party relational governance on the performance of collaborative innovation in China. By integrating the relational view and innovation appropriation perspectives, this study analyses the effects of three mechanisms of third-party relational governancedco-reputation, interorganizational routines, and technological normsdon collaborative innovation performance. Additionally, this study investigates the moderating effects of the protection of intellectual Property Rights(IPR) on the relationship between third-party relational governance and collaborative innovation performance. Survey data of high-technology firms in China are used to empirically test the hypotheses. The results show that third-party relational governance has a positive effect on collaborative innovation performance and that IPR protection has different moderating effects. This study contributes to the relational governance literature by adding the perspective of third parties and analyzing three mechanisms of third-party relational governance in a single model. This study also contributes to the innovation appropriation literature by examining the role of IPR protection in governing collaborative innovation in China. Finally, this study offers suggestions on how Chinese firms should govern their collaborative innovation to remedy the limitations of a weak IPR legal institutional framework. 展开更多

This paper study argues that some disruptive new trends are surfacing with the emergence of new technologies, which makes an efficient and effective R&D and innovation system even more relevant for any country to compete at a global level.Against this backdrop, the study tries to measure the effectiveness of the Chinese innovation system, using the“R&D spending as percentage of GDP”as the input variable and the“contribution of R&D and related business activities to the value‐added manufacturing exports”as the output variable.Based on a 59‐country sample in the OECD‐WTO TiVA database, the regression results show a significant and positive correlation between the two variables. The findings also complement with other existing empirical and qualitative studies in this area. The overall findings show that China has achieved significant efficiency and effectiveness in its innovation system compared with many other countries;in fact, since 2009,the efficiency has accelerated. However,it still lags behind the major global players. This means China still has some room to improve in order to transform its increasing inputs in R&D and technology innovation into commensurate outputs. This situation calls for further improvements in its innovation ecosystem. 展开更多

The primary objective of this study is to delve into transnational projects conducted between 2014 and 2020,with a strong emphasis on environmental quality. Our focus is directed toward projects that encompass either eco-innovation or feature elements intrinsic to a circular economy. To achieve this goal,we introduce a pioneering analytical framework tailored to dissect transnational projects, which intricately interweaves the diverse dimensions of environmental quality and innovation, facilitating a comparative assessment across various program classifications. Our approach aligns with the overarching mission of the four flagship initiatives,in which we evaluate the combined impacts on sustainability and innovation. This evaluation considers three fundamental factors:(1)resource allocation,(2)innovation type,and(3)infusion of eco-innovation or circular economy elements. Our methodology unfolds through a systematic,step-by-step progression.First,we meticulously handpick programs, specifically Interreg,Horizon, and Life projects, within the scope of TSG3(Environmental Quality). Each of these programs corresponds to one of the following four flagship initiatives:(1)overseeing and managing marine species,(2)fostering sustainable development in coastal and maritime zones,(3)safeguarding and elevating natural habitats and terrestrial ecosystems,and(4)formulating transnational contingency strategies for maritime accidents.Through an exhaustive review,we identify projects that either directly or indirectly champion eco-innovation or other facets of the circular economy.Concurrently,we uncover broader manifestations of innovation,eco-innovation,and circular economy principles.Employing the Oslo Manual as a guide,we methodically categorize these innovations into the product, process, organizational, and marketing domains. In the timeframe under scrutiny,a relatively modest subset of projects embraced eco-innovations and practices aligned with the circular economy. Our findings culminate in the formulation of practical implications to inv 展开更多

This study explores the relative strength of public policies promoting advanced manufacturing by comparing the government programs and capacities of two world leaders in science and technology:the USA and Germany.Based on insights from’varieties-of-capitalism’literature and using process tracing methodology, this study identifies significant differences in today’s pursuit of advanced manufacturing. The German model of Rhine capitalism has strength due to its long tradition of diversified quality work, built on a long-term commitment to government-industry collaboration, with significant indirect public support provided by vocational training and research institutes. The American model of Manchester capitalism has been challenged by the loss of millions of low-skilled manufacturing jobs due to outsourcing and competition from Asia. The study finds that the“Manufacturing USA”policy initiative of the Obama era, although directly inspired by Germany’s Fraunhofer institutes,is hampered by the contextual and institutional circumstances identified. With biobased carbon fibers offering the potential of a novel,low-cost material, pursued with research and development(R&D)efforts in both countries,it provides a measure for evaluating policy outcomes, and the study confirms Germany’s technological lead.In addition, the study’s process-tracing methodology reveals that significant legacies from German knowledge creation in the past have spilled over to American science and technology, and may continue to do so,lured by government funds.Further studies on advanced manufacturing should test the robustness of these findings. 展开更多

To contribute to the empirical literature on innovation in non-profit organizations, this study examines innovation in Private Social Solidarity Institutions with social responses for the elderly in Northern Portugal. It enriches the literature by clarifying the concept of innovation applied to non-profit organizations, which represents a perspective different from the business context. Moreover,it is important to support the innovation decisionmaking process in similar non-profit organizations. For this study, the population was surveyed through questionnaires based on the PUBLIN research project, which has already been applied in different countries, and the targets were employees of organizations with social responses for the elderly. Our sample is small, with 28 respondent institutions and 51 employees, but it is representative,as it includes institutions from all districts in Northern Portugal. The study employed a quantitative approach, particularly factor analysis, multiple linear regression, and correlation analyses, using scales already applied in other dimensions of the social sector,to understand the effect of each innovation dimension/determinant on creativity and innovation in nonprofit organizations. The results show that in these organizations with social responses for the elderly, learning orientation,risk-taking,and job satisfaction have a positive impact on innovation. 展开更多

In this review of ten years of social innovation research(2012e2022),we define and explore three paradigms in the field:instrumentalist, strong, and democratic. We investigate how language usage and geography play a central role in identifying which paradigms recently published scholarship falls into. While we do not insist that sharp divisions exist between each paradigm,we do find that on the“instrumentalist”side, language tends to abstract or neutralize power relations.Further, these perspectives tend to derive from Western or Eurocentric orientations or biases. The“strong”paradigm accepts the necessity of institutional and stakeholder engagement and seeks to engage socially excluded populations. In contrast, geographical diversity, attendance to historicized and systemic inequalities, and elevation of the most marginalized communities are more likely to be centered in the“democratic”paradigm. We apply this discussion to recent research in arts-related social innovation and the related field of social entrepreneurship. 展开更多

Open innovation benefits from access to cutting-edge discoveries to increase their transformation into tangible applications for the benefit of society.Improving research quality has been proposed as a primary objective of open science by the United Nations,to increase science reproducibility, impact, and trust, leading to robust decision-making and policies. However, opening access to data and processes is insufficient for researchers to achieve open innovation in the context of globalization, for example,by gathering insights from external and internal sources.Developing the appropriate mindset to manage complexity and generate synergy among researchers in academia, industry, and the government is essential to catalyze knowledge and transform it into relevant innovations for society. To gain insights into the roles and challenges of researchers aiming to bridge the gap between open science and open innovation,a decade-plus Mapping Literature Review was conducted based on the complex thinking paradigm.Complex thinking allows for novel connections of the information collected through open science and open innovation, considering different forms of engaging with alternative means of knowledge creation that may promote innovative and critical thinking. The findings revealed:a)broad positioning of the terms in the European Union;b)open access and open data as current driving themes;c)a constant trade-off between the terms“open data”and“information protection”;d)lack of studies on researchers’complex thinking to help them manage openness;e)absence of the environmental helix in the initiatives;and(f)challenges in innovative communication and collaborative practices among public and private entities.Overall,we identified an opportunity to develop researchers’complex thinking such that the openness of information becomes a shared responsibility among partners across multiple helices. This shared responsibility can have methodological implications that permeate how open science and open innovation are theorized and,in pr 展开更多
