microRNAs (miRNAs)are endogenous small non-coding RNAs that bind to mRNAs and target them for cleavage and/or translational repression,leading to gene silencing.We previously developed short tandem target mimic (STTM)... microRNAs (miRNAs)are endogenous small non-coding RNAs that bind to mRNAs and target them for cleavage and/or translational repression,leading to gene silencing.We previously developed short tandem target mimic (STTM)technology to deactivate endogenous miRNAs in Arabidopsis.Here,we created hundreds of STTMs that target both conserved and species-specific miRNAs in Arabidopsis,tomato,rice,and maize,providing a resource for the functional interrogation of miRNAs.We not only revealed the functions of several miRNAs in plant development,but also demonstrated that tissue-specific inactivation of a few miRNAs in rice leads to an increase in grain size without adversely affecting overall plant growth and development.RNA-seq and small RNAseq analyses of STTM156/157 and STTM165/166 transgenic plants revealed the roles of these miRNAs in plant hormone biosynthesis and activation,secondary metabolism,and ion-channel activity-associated electrophysiology,demonstrating that STTM technology is an effective approach for studying miRNA functions.To facilitate the study and application of STTM transgenic plants and to provide a useful platform for storing and sharing of information about miRNA-regulated gene networks,we have established an online Genome Browser (https://blossom.ffr.mtu.edu/designindex2.php) to display the transcriptomic and miRNAomic changes in STTMinduced miRNA knockdown plants. 展开更多

Air leakage in underground coal mines presents a serious hazard for coal production and the safety of miners.Coating technology is commonly used as an efficient means for preventing air leakage.To address existing problems with high dust concentrations in large operations involving complex processes and the high cost of traditional coating technology,a novel coating technology that ensures intrinsic safety by utilizing water pressure and wind pressure was developed.This new coating technology was designed to suction and spray,and the technical parameters of its spray performance was also studied.The experimental tests and evaluation indicated the optimum working range is 0.3–0.7 MPa of wind pressure,1.2–10.2 L/min of water quantity,and 1.0–3.5 m of spraying distance.Moreover,this novel coating technology was tested in the Dashuitou Coal Mine in Gansu Province of China.Compared with conventional counterparts,the proposed new technology is safe,efficient,and convenient to operate.During spraying,dust concentrations were kept at less than 10 mg/m3,and the average rebound ratio resilient rate of solid materials was below 13%.After spraying,the average leakage every 100 m was 4 m3/min,and the oxygen volume fraction in the adjacent goaf was approximately 4%,demonstrating excellent air leakage prevention. 展开更多

Particulate matter(i.e.,PM_(1.0) and PM_(2.5)),considered as the key atmospheric pollutants,exerts negative effects on visibility,global climate,and human health by associated chemical compositions.However,our understanding of PM and its chemical compositions in Beijing under the current atmospheric environment is still not complete after witnessing marked alleviation during 2013–2017.Continuous measurements can be crucial for further air quality improvement by better characterizing PM pollution and chemical compositions in Beijing.Here,we conducted simultaneous measurements on PM in Beijing during 2018–2019.Results indicate that annualmean PM_(1.0) and PM_(2.5) concentrations were 35.49±18.61μg/m^(3) and 66.58±60.17μg/m^(3),showing a positive response to emission controls.The contribution of sulfate,nitrate,and ammonium(SNA)played an enhanced role with elevated PM loading and acted as the main contributors to pollution episodes.Discrepancies observed among chemical species between PM_(1.0) and PM_(2.5) in spring suggest that sand particles trend to accumulate in the range of 1–2.5μm.Pollution episodes occurred accompanied with southerly clusters and high formation of SNA by heterogeneous reactions in summer and winter,respectively.Results from positive matrix factorization(PMF)combined with potential source contribution function(PSCF)models showed that potential areas were seasonal dependent,secondary and vehicular sources became much more important compared with previous studies in Beijing.Our study presented a continuous investigation on PM and sources origins in Beijing,which provides a better understanding for further emission control as well as a reference for other cities in developing countries. 展开更多

Introduction: Acute obstructive renal failure (AORF) is a frequent clinical situation, secondary to obstruction of the urinary excretory tract. Whatever the cause, urinary tract obstruction suddenly opposes glomerular filtration and is responsible for tubulointerstitial lesions. It accounts for 10% of acute renal failure (ARF). The aim of this study was to identify the causes and prognosis of cases of acute obstructive renal failure managed at the Centre National d’hémodialyse Donka. Material and Methods: This was a prospective descriptive study lasting 6 months, from September 1, 2022 to February 29, 2023. All patients undergoing haemodialysis for acute obstructive renal failure who agreed to participate in the study and whose medical records were complete were included. Results: During the course of the study, we registered 97 haemodialysis patients, including 20 cases (20.62%) of acute obstructive renal failure. The mean age of the patients was 57.8 ± 10.54 years, with a male predominance of 11 cases (55%) and a sex ratio of 1.22. The reasons for consultation were dominated by physical asthenia 11 cases (55%), lumbar pain 9 cases (50%), vomiting 6 cases (30%) and acute urine retention 6 cases (30%). Arterial hypertension 16 cases (80%) and urinary tract infection 10 cases (50%) were the most common antecedents. The etiologies of RAOI were dominated by lithiasis 10 cases (50%), neoplasia 6 cases (30%) and benign prostatic hypertrophy 3 cases (15%). mean creatinine was 1267.60 ± 710.76 μmol/l with extremes of 243 μmol/l and 2822 μmol/l, mean urea was 39.56 ± 18.36, hyperkalemia in 14 cases (70%) and hyponatremia in 8 cases (40%). After hemodialysis, 9 cases (45%) recovered renal function, 4 cases (20%) became chronic and 7 cases (35%) died. Conclusion: The frequency of AKI remains non-negligible in our department, and early detection and prompt management would considerably reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with this pathology. 展开更多

Introduction: Minimally invasive urological interventions have long been practiced blindly in our context. The popularization of ultrasound in urological practice has contributed to changing habits by making the procedures safer and more effective. The objective of this work was to study the technical aspects, indications and results of minimally invasive urological procedures guided by ultrasound. Material and methods: This was a prospective descriptive study lasting 1 year from January to December 2023 at the Médicis clinic in Conakry. Results: We carried out 126 ultrasound-guided urological interventions in one year, including 6 percutaneous nephrostomies (NPC), one renal cyst puncture-aspiration-sclerotherapy, 102 prostate biopsies, 5 drainages by transrectal aspiration of prostatic abscesses, 10 placements of cystostomy probes. Suprapubic, 2 puncture-aspiration-sclerotherapies for vaginal hydroceles. The average age of our patients was 69 years and the predominant age range was 61 - 70. The majority of our patients were male (97.61%) with a sex ratio of 41 men to one woman. Ultrasound-guided urological interventions were for diagnostic purposes (80.95%), for therapeutic purposes (15.77%) and for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes (3.96%). The indications for ultrasound-guided urological interventions were dominated by prostate pathologies (84.91%). The majority of interventions were performed rectally (84.92%) versus (13.43%) abdominally and only 1.58% scrotalally. All procedures were performed in B-ultrasound mode under local anesthesia and on an outpatient basis. For therapeutic interventions, the patients were seen again one month after the procedure, the clinical examination and ultrasound control found the evolution to be favorable. Conclusion: ultrasound is useful in urological practice for guiding minimally invasive interventions. The indications for ultrasound-guided procedures in urology are dominated by prostate pathologies. These procedures are safe and effective with fewer complications. Interv 展开更多

Context and Objective: Groin hernia is a common pathology in visceral surgery (2nd rank after appendicitis), which affects approximately 4.6% of the African population. Restoring the normal anatomy of the groin region is one of the most benign interventions. However, uro-andrological complications are possible. This study aimed to contribute to the improvement of the management of urogenital complications of groin hernia surgery. Patients and Method: We carried out a prospective study of descriptive type with a duration of 6 months from 1 August 2021 to 31 January 2022. The data were collected using a pre-established survey sheet. The study covered several sites (public hospitals and private clinics) in Guinea. Results: The urogenital complications of the surgery of the hernia of the groin represented 15.22% or 14 cases out of 92 patients. The average age was 37.00 years with extremes of 20-69 years. Polygamists occupied the first place. The reason for consultation was dominated by decreased testicular volume (42.86%), followed by a desire to conceive (21.43%). Unilateral testicular atrophy represented 63.64%, bilateral 27.27%. We performed a left orchidectomy in one patient and a cystorraphy in another simple operative follow-up. The other cases consisting of testicular atrophy, due to lack of a suitable technical platform, did not benefit from any specific therapeutic treatment. Conclusion: Urogenital complications of groin hernia surgery are relatively common. Testicular atrophy was the main clinical complication. The left orchidectomy and cystorraphy were the therapeutic procedures performed. 展开更多

Patients and method: It is a prospective study of a descriptive type covering a period of 6 months. The study covered 17 patients, all received for a desire to conceive after at least one year of regular sexual intercourse without contraception. The data were collected from patient interviews using a pre-established questionnaire. Results: The average age of the patients was 32.07 years with extremes of 23 years and 42 years. During this study, 64.70% of patients were no longer participating in community ceremonies. The patients’ relationships with their spouse and family deteriorated in 52.94% and 47.06%, respectively. Conversely, relations with the family of origin remained unchanged in 70.59 percent of cases. The reduction in economic activity was by 13 patients (76.48%). Conclusion: Male infertility causes a real psychic earthquake in men with its corollaries of negative feelings. The rather complex moral repercussions of male infertility affect not only the individual, his/her partner, and family, but also economic activity. 展开更多

The history of mankind contains so many illustrations of well-classified and violent struggles against various animals over crop production in agricultural fields, attacks on human life or competition in order to have access to certain natural resources. The aim of this study is to characterise the human-wildlife conflicts that occur around the KBNP, especially with regard to primates. Surveys were carried out in 260 households selected using the snowball method. The results showed that human-wildlife conflicts around the KBNP are characterised by the destruction of crops in riparian fields by monkeys, chimpanzees and gorillas, the destruction of houses, physical attacks and zoonoses. Despite the conservation and protection measures for wildlife and local populations put in place by the Park’s managers, conflicts between local populations and the Park’s wild animals are still visible. These conflicts lead to the detention of wild animals by local people roaming in the villages and to poaching on the Park’s boundaries. The weakness of the community management policy on the part of the park managers and the resentment of the indigenous peoples towards the restriction of their access to natural resources are the major constraints on the sustainable management of conflicts between the local populations and the wild animals in the KBNP. The strategies for the sustainable resolution of human-wildlife conflicts around the KBNP must be geared towards and integrated into a community conservation approach. 展开更多

Methodology: This was a prospective multi-operator analytic... Objective: To compare the results of transvesical and retropubic prostatic adenomectomies at the Urology-Andrology Department of Conakry University Hospital. Methodology: This was a prospective multi-operator analytical study lasting 6 months. It included 70 patients operated on for benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), divided into 2 groups of 35 according to the retropubic or transvesical technique. The data was collected using a questionnaire and entered into the Epi info application. The analysis was initially descriptive and then univariate. To identify confounding factors, a multivariate analysis was performed. The application conditions of each test were checked before their application. A p-value Results: Upper adenomectomies represented 53.6% of surgeries performed for BPH. The average age was 73.2 years. The mean prostate volume was 117 ± 51.6 cc and the mean total PSA was 9.2 ± 11.4 ng/ml. The majority of patients had an ASA1 (60%) and ASA2 (37.1%) score. Spinal anesthesia, a double-current silicone probe with hinged hinge 22, and drainage of the prevesical space were carried out in all patients, i.e. 100%. The average overall blood loss was 229 ± 98.2 ml. It was lower in the group of patients operated via the retropubic route (187 ± 60.4 ml). The same was true for the duration of intervention (49.1 ± 7.17 vs 55.4 ± 7.9 min), the catheter wearing time (5.14 ± 0.97 vs 9.29 ± 2 .9 days) and the length of hospitalization (=6.26 ± 1.15 vs 12.1 ± 5.74 days). Conclusion: The retropubic technique has advantages over the transvesical one. These advantages are translated by a gain in the duration of the intervention, blood loss, catheter wearing time and length of hospitalization. 展开更多

The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of prostate weight on the morbidity and mortality of transvesical prostatectomy for adenoma in the urology-andrology department of the Ignace Deen National Hospital. Materials and Methods: This was a prospective, longitudinal and analytical study lasting 6 months, from March 1, 2022 to August 31, 2022 including patients admitted and operated on by open transvesical prostatectomy by assessing the influence of prostate weight on the morbidity and mortality of transvesical adenomectomies. Results: 108 patients were included in our study, the average age of our patients was 70 ± 7.7 years, cultivators were the most represented profession with 38.89%, and hypertension was the most represented comorbidity with 75%. 33.06% of cases became complicated and surgical wound infection was the main complication with a frequency of 17.40%. Statistical analysis did not conclude that, the prostate weight does not have a statistically significant influence on the morbidity and mortality of transvesical open prostatectomy for benign prostatic hyperplasia. Conclusion: Prostate weight has no influence on the morbidity and mortality of transvesical prostate adenoma. 展开更多

Goal: To determine the type of comorbidity and highlight the complications of adenomectomy and comorbidities. Material and Methods: This is a prospective, descriptive, cross-sectional study lasting six (6) months, from July 1, 2022 to December 31, 2022. Patients with BPH on comorbidity condition taken care of during the study period AND have agreed to participate in the study. Results: During our study, 49 cases of benign prostatic hypertrophy with comorbidities were collected, representing a frequency of 29%. The average age ranges for the patients were 43 - 70 years. The age group most affected was 70 to 79 years old (38.80%). Nocturnal urinary frequency was the main reason for consultation present in all our patients. The most frequent comorbidity was hypertension, i.e. 83.70%. The PSA rate between 4 and 10 was the most represented, i.e. 42.86%. The prostate volume was between 61 and 100 ml in 40.82% of patients. Histology showed that it was a benign adenomatous hypertrophy of the prostate in 85.70% and a prostatic adenomyoma in 14.29%. Trans-bladder adenomectomy alone was the most performed technique, i.e. 49%, followed by trans urethral resection of the prostate, i.e. 38.80%. Retention of urine after removal of the catheter was the most observed complication, i.e. 12.20%. Conclusion: Benign prostatic hypertrophy with comorbidities constitutes a frequent association. Because their presence can affect effectiveness and lead to complications. 展开更多

Photodynamic therapy(PDT),which utilizes light excite photosensitizers(PSs)to generate reactive oxygen species(ROS)and consequently ablate cancer cells or diseased tissue,has attracted a great deal of attention in the last decades due to its unique advantages.However,the advancement of PDT is restricted by the inherent characteristics of PS and tumor microenvironment(TME).It is urgent to explore high-performance PSs with TME regulation capability and subsequently improve the therapeutic outcomes.Herein,we reported a newly engineered PS of polymer encapsulated carbonized hemin nanoparticles(P-CHNPs)via a facile synthesis procedure for boosting photodynamic anticancer therapy.Solvothermal treatment of hemin enabled the synthesized P-CHNPs to enhance oxidative stress in TME,which could be further amplified under light irradiation.Excellent in vitro and in vivo PDT effects were achieved due to the improved ROS(hydroxyl radicals and singlet oxygen)generation efficiency,hypoxia relief,and glutathione depletion.Moreover,the superior in vitro and in vivo biocompatibility and boosted PDT effect make the P-CHNPs a potential therapeutic agent for future translational research. 展开更多

Objective: To analyze the management of urological complications of gynecologic and obstetric surgeries. Material and Methods: We retrospectively studied 39 patients hospitalized in the Department of Urology of the Conakry Teaching Hospital for urological complications of gynecological surgery, during 9 years. The epidemiological, diagnostic, surgical and outcome parameters have been analyzed. Results: The urological complications of gynecologic surgery represent 0.29% of admissions in the Department of Urology. The mean age was 31 years with extremes of 18 and 47 years. Etiological factors were dominated by caesarean section with 74.36% of cases. The main lesions observed were vesico-vaginal and uretero-vaginal fistulas respectively 43.6% and 41.2% of cases. The mean delay of diagnosis was 5 months (extreme: 7 days to 3 years). Urine leakage from the vagina was the main symptom. The surgical treatment consisted in 17 surgeries for vesico-vaginal fistulas, 16 surgeries for uretero-vesical reimplantation, 2 surgeries for termino terminal ureterorraphia, 2 surgeries for vesico-uterine fistulas and 1 surgery for hysterectomy. Healing was obtained in all ureteral injuries and we noted two cases of failure in vesico-vaginal fistula. Conclusion: urological complications of gynecologic surgery remain frequent. They are dominated by the vesico-vaginal and uretero-vaginal fistulas and the main etiology is caesarean section. The treatment is surgical in our context. 展开更多

The sudden onset of the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)in January 2020 has affected essential global health services.Cancer-screening services that can reduce cancer mortality are strongly affected.However,the specific role of COVID-19 in cancer screening is not fully understood.This study aimed to assess the efficiency of global cancer screening programs before and during the COVID-19 pandemic and to promote potential cancer-screening strategies for the next pandemic.Electronic searches in PubMed,Embase,and Web of Science,and manual searches were performed between January 1,2020 and March 1,2023.Cohort studies that reported the number of participants who underwent cancer screening before and during the COVID-19 pandemic were included.The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale.Differences in cancer-screening rates were estimated using the incidence rate ratio(IRR).Fifty-five cohort studies were included in this meta-analysis.The screening rates of colorectal cancer using invasive screening methods(Pooled IRR=0.52,95%CI:0.42 to 0.65,p<0.01),cervical cancer(Pooled IRR=0.56,95%CI:0.47 to 0.67,p<0.01),breast cancer(Pooled IRR=0.57,95%CI:0.49 to 0.66,p<0.01)and prostate cancer(Pooled IRR=0.71,95%CI:0.56 to 0.90,p<0.01)during the COVID-19 pandemic were significantly lower than those before the COVID-19 pandemic.The screening rates of lung cancer(Pooled IRR=0.77,95%CI:0.58 to 1.03,p=0.08)and colorectal cancer using noninvasive screening methods(Pooled IRR=0.74,95%CI:0.50 to 1.09,p=0.13)were reduced with no statistical differences.The subgroup analyses revealed that the reduction in cancer-screening rates varied across economies.Our results suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a noteworthy impact on colorectal,cervical,breast,and prostate cancer screening.Developing innovative cancer-screening technologies is important to promote the efficiency of cancer-screening services in the post-COVID-19 era and prepare for the next pandemic. 展开更多

Rapid developments in the Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence trigger higher requirements for image perception and learning of external environments through visual systems.However,limited by von Neumann's bottleneck,the physical separation of sense,memory,and processing units in a conventional personal computer-based vision system tend to consume a significant amount of energy,time latency,and additional hardware costs.By integrating computational tasks of multiple functionalities into the sensors themselves,the emerging bio-inspired neuromorphic visual systems provide an opportunity to overcome these limitations.With high speed,ultralow power and strong adaptability,it is highly desirable to develop a neuromorphic vision system that is based on highly precise in-sensor computing devices,namely retinomorphic devices.We here present a timely review of retinomorphic devices for visual in-sensor computing.We begin with several types of physical mechanisms of photoelectric sensors that can be constructed for artificial vision.The potential applications of retinomorphic hardware are,thereafter,thoroughly summarized.We also highlight the possible strategies to existing challenges and give a brief perspective of retinomorphic architecture for in-sensor computing. 展开更多

The measurement uncertainty analysis is carried out to investigate the measurable dimensions of cylindrical workpieces by the rotary-scan method in this paper.Due to the difficult alignment of the workpiece with a diameter of less than 3 mm by the rotary scan method,the measurement uncertainty of the cylindrical workpiece with a diameter of 3 mm and length of 50 mm which is measured by a roundness measuring machine,is evaluated according to GUM(Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement)as an example.Since the uncertainty caused by the eccentricity of the measured workpiece is different with the dimension changing,the measurement uncertainty of cylindrical workpieces with other dimensions can be evaluated the same as the diameter of 3 mm but with different eccentricity.Measurement uncertainty caused by different eccentricities concerning the dimension of the measured cylindrical workpiece is set to simulate the evaluations.Compared to the target value of the measurement uncertainty of 0.1μm,the measurable dimensions of the cylindrical workpiece can be obtained.Experiments and analysis are presented to quantitatively evaluate the reliability of the rotary-scan method for the roundness measurement of cylindrical workpieces. 展开更多

In recent years,the emergence of numerous applications of artificial intelligence(AI)has sparked a new technological revolution.These applications include facial recognition,autonomous driving,intelligent robotics,and image restoration.However,the data processing and storage procedures in the conventional von Neumann architecture are discrete,which leads to the“memory wall”problem.As a result,such architecture is incompatible with AI requirements for efficient and sustainable processing.Exploring new computing architectures and material bases is therefore imperative.Inspired by neurobiological systems,in-memory and in-sensor computing techniques provide a new means of overcoming the limitations inherent in the von Neumann architecture.The basis of neural morphological computation is a crossbar array of high-density,high-efficiency non-volatile memory devices.Among the numerous candidate memory devices,ferroelectric memory devices with non-volatile polarization states,low power consumption and strong endurance are expected to be ideal candidates for neuromorphic computing.Further research on the complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor(CMOS)compatibility for these devices is underway and has yielded favorable results.Herein,we first introduce the development of ferroelectric materials as well as their mechanisms of polarization reversal and detail the applications of ferroelectric synaptic devices in artificial neural networks.Subsequently,we introduce the latest developments in ferroelectrics-based in-memory and in-sensor computing.Finally,we review recent works on hafnium-based ferroelectric memory devices with CMOS process compatibility and give a perspective for future developments. 展开更多

Ionic liquids(ILs)are an emerging class of media of fundamental importance for chemical engineering,especially due to their interaction with solid surfaces.Here,we explore the growth phenomenon of surface-confined ILs and reveal a peculiar structural transition behavior from order to disorder above a threshold thickness.This behavior can be explained by the variation of interfacial forces with increasing distance from the solid surface.Direct structural observation of different ILs highlights the influence of the ionic structure on the growth process.Notably,the length of the alkyl chain in the cation is found to be a determining factor for the ordering trend.Also,the thermal stability of surface-confined ILs is investigated in depth by controlling annealing treatments.It is found that the ordered monolayer ILs exhibit high robustness against high temperatures.Our findings provide new perspectives on the properties of surface-confined ILs and open up potential avenues for manipulating the structures of nanometer-thick IL films for various applications. 展开更多
