Background:Diabetes mellitus (DM) remains a major health problem worldwide.Several clinical trials have shown the superiority of the Traditional Chinese Medicine in delaying or reversing the development and progres...Background:Diabetes mellitus (DM) remains a major health problem worldwide.Several clinical trials have shown the superiority of the Traditional Chinese Medicine in delaying or reversing the development and progression of DM.This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Jinlida (JLD) granule,a Chinese herbal recipe,in the treatment of impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and its effect on the prevention of DM.Methods:Sixty-five IGT patients were randomized to receive one bag of JLD granules three times daily (JLD group,n =34) or no drug intervention (control group,n =31) for 12 weeks.Oral glucose tolerance test,glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c),body mass index,blood lipids levels,fasting insulin,and insulin resistance calculated using homeostatic model assessment (HOMA-IR) of all the patients were observed and compared before and after the treatment.Results:Sixty-one participants completed the trial (32 in JLD group and 29 in the control group).There were statistically significant decreases in HbA1c (P 〈 0.001),2-h plasma glucose (P 〈 0.001),and HOMA-IR (P =0.029) in JLD group compared with the control group after 12 weeks of treatment.After 12 weeks of treatment,two (6.9%) patients returned to normal blood glucose,and five (17.2%) patients turned into DM in control group,while in the JLD group,14 (43.8%) returned to normal blood glucose and 2 (6.2%) turned into DM.There was a significant difference in the number of subjects who had normal glucose at the end of the study between two groups (P =0.001).Conclusions:JLD granule effectively improved glucose control,increased the conversion of IGT to normal glucose,and improved the insulin resistance in patients with IGT.This Chinese herbal medicine may have a clinical value for IGT.展开更多

Plant habitat suitability assessment can provide technical guidance and information support for ecological restoration. Thirteen factors in three categories of terrain, meteorology and soil were chosen to build a habitat suitability assessment index framework in the Upper Reaches of the Min River, based on the local natural environment and the actual influencing factors of vegetative growth. Combined with the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and entropy method, which were used to calculate weights of indexes, habitat suitability was studied by using a multi-objective linear weighting model and geographic information systems (GIS) spatial analysis techniques. The assessment results are as follows: Altitude, soil stability, aspect and slope have more important effects on plant habitat suitability in the Upper Reaches of the Min River, and their weights are o.311, 0.260, o.198 and o.125, respectively. Suitable and sub-suitable habitats cover 4431.8o km2 and 6171.12 km2, respectively; most of which are distributed along both sides of rivers and have higher suitability. Unsuitable habitats cover the largest area (6679.76 km2), accounting for 29.83% of the whole area; and the worst unsuitable habitats are 5107.23 km2 (22.81%); they account for more than half of the study area. These results indicate that the plant habitat in the Upper Reaches of the Min River is poor and ecological restoration is both urgent and difficult. Therefore, based on the principle of taking measures suitable to the habitat in ecological restoration projects, ecological and engineering measures should be combined to have better effects, while increasing the strength of ecological protection.展开更多

BACKGROUND Circular RNAs(circRNAs)are a newly discovered class of endogenous noncoding RNAs that may have roles in cancer genesis and development.In the recent literature,dysregulated circRNAs have been extensively in...BACKGROUND Circular RNAs(circRNAs)are a newly discovered class of endogenous noncoding RNAs that may have roles in cancer genesis and development.In the recent literature,dysregulated circRNAs have been extensively investigated in hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).Whether or not circRNAs are of clinical value for the management of HCC has not been characterized.AIM To meta-analyze the diagnostic and prognostic value of abnormally expressed circRNAs in HCC.METHODS Eligible studies were sourced from PubMed,EMBASE,and CNKI online databases.Data on patients’clinical characteristics,including diagnostic efficacy and overall survival,were extracted.The diagnostic and prognostic parameters were respectively synthesized using the bivariate meta-analysis model and multivariate Cox hazard regression analysis based on Stata 12.0.The trim and fill method was adopted to assess the possible effects from publication bias.RESULTS A total of 21 eligible studies were included.The pooled sensitivity,specificity,and area under the curve of abnormally expressed circRNAs in distinguishing HCC from non-cancer controls were 0.78(95%CI:0.69–0.85),0.80(95%CI:0.74–0.86),and 0.86,respectively.Survival analyses showed that the downregulated circRNA expression signature correlated perfectly with HCC survival[hazard ratio(HR)=0.42,95%CI:0.19–0.91,P=0.028;I2=92.7%,P=0.000],whereas the HCC cases with high circRNA levels had significantly poorer prognoses than those of patients with low circRNA levels(HR=2.22,95%CI:1.50–3.30,P=0.000;I2=91%,P=0.000).Moreover,abnormally expressed circRNAs were intimately associated with tumor size,differentiation grade,microvascular invasion,metastasis,TNM stage,and serum alpha fetal protein level in patients with HCC.Stratified analysis based on sample type,control source,and expression status also yielded robust results.CONCLUSION Abnormally expressed circRNA signatures show immense potential as novel non-invasive biomarker(s)for HCC diagnosis and prognosis.展开更多
Constructing two-dimensional(2D)structures for transition-metal oxides(TMOs)can optimize their electronic structures and enable high specific surface areas,thereby offering routes to enhancing the performance of TMOs ...Constructing two-dimensional(2D)structures for transition-metal oxides(TMOs)can optimize their electronic structures and enable high specific surface areas,thereby offering routes to enhancing the performance of TMOs in energy storage and conversion.However,most 2D TMOs,e.g.,Fe_(2)O^(3),remain so far synthetically challenging due to their intrinsic non-layered structures.Herein,inspired by the mechanism of biomineralization,we report the synthesis of CuO/Fe_(2)O^(3)hybrid ultrathin nanosheets by using polyvinylpyrrolidone-decorated CuO nanosheets as growth modifiers to modulate the hydrolysis process of Fe^(2+).The formulated“absorption-and-crystallization”two-step formation processes of such 2D hybrid structures accorded well with the biomineralization scheme in nature.Combining the in-situ transmission electron microscopy(TEM)study,theoretical calculation,and control experiments,we validated that the large density of 2D/2D interfaces enabled by this bio-inspired synthesis process can overcome the self-stacking phenomenon during lithium-ion battery cycling,leading to their high operation stability.This work emphasizes the bio-inspired synthesis of 2D TMOs as a promising pathway toward material design and performance optimization.展开更多
