A high angular resolution near-infrared image that shows the intensity of polarization for the GG Tau A binary system was obtained with the Subaru Telescope. The image shows a circumbinary disk scattering the light from the central binary. The azimuthal profile of the intensity of polarization for the circumbinary disk is roughly reproduced by a simple disk model with the Henyey-Greenstein phase function and the Rayleigh function, indicating there are small dust grains at the surface of the disk. Combined with a previous observation of the circumbinary disk, our image indicates that the gap structure in the circumbinary disk orbits counterclockwise, but material in the disk orbits clockwise. We propose that there is a shadow caused by material located between the central binary and the circumbinary disk. The separations and position angles of the stellar components of the binary in the past 20 yr are consistent with the binary orbit with a = 33.4 AU and e = 0.34. 展开更多

Profitability of RE-Technology Regarding the Economic Environment:A Case Study of Swiss SMEs

Considering the important changes in the Swiss energy sector, especially in renewable energy(RE)technologies, new revenue possibilities for small and medium sized enterprises(SMEs) emerge. However, the adaption of RE-technologies for Swiss enterprises relies on tangible financial returns, based on complex calculations. This article analyses business opportunities(BOs) of eight Swiss SMEs considering the net present value of RE-investments in an uncertain economic environment. We identify two profitable BOs for Swiss SMEs and three which are not profitable. Further, the article demonstrates that the profitability of such investments remains mostly positive even under economic uncertainties. Surprisingly the profitability does not change significantly if the SME receives a subsidy or not. The support instrument of the Swiss Government has not a ponderous impact on the decision to invest in RE-technologies or not. Therefore, the article emphasizes the importance of including SME in the Swiss attempt to decentralize the energy market. 展开更多

Purpose – In the process of robot shell design, it is necessary to match the shape of the input 3D originalcharacter mesh model and robot endoskeleton, in order to make the input model fit for robot and avoidcollision. So, the purpose of this paper is to find an object of reference, which can be used for the process ofshape matching.Design/methodology/approach – In this work, the authors propose an interior bounded box (IBB)approach that derives from oriented bounding box (OBB). This kind of box is inside the closed mesh model.At the same time, it has maximum volume which is aligned with the object axis but is enclosed by all the meshvertices. Based on the IBB of input mesh model and the OBB of robot endoskeleton, the authors can completethe process of shape matching. In this paper, the authors use an evolutionary algorithm, covariance matrixadaptation evolution strategy (CMA-ES), to approximate the IBB based on skeleton and symmetry of inputcharacter mesh model.Findings – Based on the evolutionary algorithm CMA-ES, the optimal position and scale informationof IBB can be found. The authors can obtain satisfactory IBB result after this optimization process.The output IBB has maximum volume and is enveloped by the input character mesh model as well.Originality/value – To the best knowledge of the authors, the IBB is first proposed and used in the field ofrobot shell design. Taking advantage of the IBB, people can quickly obtain a shell model that fit for robot.At the same time, it can avoid collision between shell model and the robot endoskeleton. 展开更多

The problem and solutions to automaticmodeling of animatable virtual humans are studied. Methods for capturing the shape of real people,parameterization techniques for modeling static shape (the variety of human body shapes) and dynamicshape (how the body shape changes as it moves) of virtual humans are classified, summarized andcompared. Background The uncanny valley hypothesis states that users may experience discomfort when inter-acting with almost human-like artificial characters.Advancements in artificial intelligence,robotics,and computer graphics have led to the development of life-like virtual humans and humanoid robots.Revisiting this hypothesis is necessary to check whether they positively or negatively affect the current population,who are highly accustomed to the latest technologies.Methods In this study,we present a unique evaluation of the uncanny valley hypothesis by allowing participants to interact live with four humanoid robots that have varying levels of human-likeness.Each participant completed a survey questionnaire to evaluate the affinity of each robot.Additionally,we used deep learning methods to quantify the participants’emotional states using multimodal cues,including visual,audio,and text cues,by recording the participant-robot interactions.Results Multi-modal analysis and surveys provided interesting results and insights into the uncanny valley hypothesis. 展开更多
