Inflammatory biomarkers, including C-reactive protein (CRP),interleukin 6 (IL- 6), soluble tumor necrosis factor alpha receptor 2, soluble intercellular and vascular adhesion molecules (intercellular adhesion molecule 1 and vascular cell adhesion molecule 1), and lipid biomarkers, including lipoprotein(a) and apolipoprotein B, have all been associated with cardiovascular disease. We previously found an association betweenAMD and CRP in a cross-sectional analysis, but the prospective relationships between AMD, CRP, and the other cardiovascular disease markers are unknown. Objective: To test the hypothesis that baseline cardiovascular disease biomarkers are associated with subsequent increased risk for progression ofAMD.Design, Setting, and Participants: This prospective cohort study involved 251 participants aged 60 years and older who had some sign of nonexudative AMD and visual acuity of 20/200 or better in at least one eye at baseline. The AMD status was assessed by standardized grading of fundus photographs, and stored fasting blood specimens obtained at baseline were analyzed for levels of the various biomarkers. The average follow-up time was 4.6 years. Main Outcome Measures: Relationship between biomarkers and incidence rates of progression of AMD. Results: Comparing the highest quartile with the lowest quartile, CRP was associated with progression of AMD, with a multivariate adjusted relative risk (RR) of 2.10 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.06- 4.18; P for trend, .046) controlling for body mass index, smoking, and other cardiovascular variables and a multivariate adjusted RR of 2.02 (95% CI, 1.00- 4.04; P for trend, .06) controlling additionally for antioxidant nutrients. Interleukin 6 was also related to progression of AMD, with a multivariate adjusted RR of 1.81 (95% CI, 0.97- 3.36; P for trend, .03). Baseline haemodynamic and echocardiographic measurements were made after a period of least 10 min resting supine within the chamber. Pressure was then decreased to -10,-20 and -30 mmHg, with each pressure maintained for 15 rain. The indices of four transvalvular and SVC flow were measured using Doppler echocardiography. Results :The results showed that S wave, Re wave ,and VTI of SVC progressively decreased with increasing LBNP. At -30 mmHg stage, S wave decreased by 35.4 % (change of 0.21±0.03 m/s, P 〈 0.001). This reduction in pre-load Was associated with a progressive decrease in SV(by 21.5 ± 4.5 ml at -30 mmHg,P 〈 0.001 ), decrease in CO(by 1.2 ± 0.2 L min^-1 at -30 mmHg LBNP,P 〈 0.001 ). The diastolic filling of mitral and tricuspid flow also reduced significantly. At -30 mmHg stage, the E wave of MVF and TVF decreased 31% and 32% respectively (change of 0.23 ± 0.05 m/s,P 〈 0.001 and 0.18 ± 0.01 m/s,P 〈 0.001). VTI of MVF and TVF decreased 27% and 27.7% respectively(change of 5.55 ± 1.41cm,P 〈 0.01 and 4.25 ± 0.44 cm,P 〈 0.01). A wave of both sides did not change significantly. Conclusion:Doppler indices changes in different LBNP stage can roughly reflect the degree of hypovoleamia caused by blood volume redistribution. The indices of Doppler echocardiography are more sensitive than traditional physiological indexes in evaluating cardiovascular responses of LBNP. Echocardiography techniques overall can evaluate the global cardiac function including systolic performance and diastolic filling.展开更多

Some emblematic species, indicators of habitat quality for the conservation of other spe- cies, might successfully be reintroduced within cities when habitat restoration and pest manage- ment programs are combined. We studied the landscape resource selection of juvenile kaka Nestor meridionalis tracked with Global Positioning System (GPS) units and released into the predator- free reserve of Zealandia in Wellington city, New Zealand. Kaka moved beyond the predator exclu- sion fence into urban suburbs. The home range size and areas of high use estimated using local convex hull (a-LoCoH) ranged from 20 to 240 ha and 2 to 21 ha, respectively. Using resource selec- tion functions and model selection we found that native forest patches and urban areas close to the reserve were selected by kaka to establish their home ranges. At a lower scale of selection (i.e., se- lection of habitats within home ranges), kaka selected the same habitat, but not necessarily those close to the reserve. Native forest patches throughout the city can facilitate the dispersal of individ- uals, while the reserve provides protection and opportunities for supplementary feeding. Urban areas might have been selected due to the placement of feeders in private backyards. Survival of forest-dwelling species in cities requires careful urban planning and management to provide the necessary habitat patches, refugia, and food sources.展开更多

Here, we review and analyze via simula- tion Hedges' g, a widely used parametric estimate of effect size. Our analyses indicate that g is sensitive to a combination of unequal trait variances and unequal sample sizes among populations and to changes in the scale of measurement. We then go on to derive and explain a new, non-parametric distance measure, 'Aft', which is caiculated based upon a joint cumulative distribution function (CDF) from all populations under study. More precisely, distances are measured in terms of the percentiles in this CDF at which each population's median lies. Ap combines many desirable features of other distance metrics into a single metric; namely, compared to other metrics, p is relatively insensitive to unequal variances and sample sizes among the populations sam- pied. Furthermore, a key feature of Ap--and our main motivation for developing it--is that it easily accommodates simultaneous comparisons of any number of traits across any number of populations. To exemplify its utility, we employ Ap to address a ques- tion related to the role of sexual selection in speciation: are sexual signals more divergent than ecological traits in closely related taxa? Using traits of known function in closely related populations, we show that traits predictive of reproductive performance are indeed, more divergent and more sexually dimorphic than traits related to ecological adaptation [Current Zoology 58 (3): 426-439 2012].展开更多

Two absorption bands at 2–3 and 5–8 THz were observed. TRTS reveals an ultrafast relaxation process of the photoinduced carrier response, well described by a rate equation model with a finite concentration of mid-bandgap trap states for self-trapped excitons. The photoinduced conductivity can be well described by the Drude–Smith conductivity model with a carrier scattering time of 12–17 fs, and we observe significant carrier localization effects. A fast refractive index change was observed 100 fs before the conductivity reached its maximum, with 2 orders of magnitude larger amplitude than expected for the optically induced THz Kerr effect, indicating that free carriers are responsible for the transient index change.展开更多
