METHODS: A total of 120 rats were used. Four groups (n = 30) were analyzed with one group for each of the following applied therapy modalities: control, mesalazine, formalin, betamethasone, and misoprostol. A single fraction of 17.5 Gy was delivered to each rat. The rats in control group rats were given saline, and the rats in the other three groups received appropriate enemas twice a day beginning on the first day after the irradiation until the day of euthanasia. On d 5, 10, and 15, ten rats from each group were euthanized and a pathologist who was unaware of treatment assignment examined the rectums using a scoring system. RESULTS: The histopathologic scores for surface epithelium, glands (crypts) and lamina propria stroma of the rectums reached their maximum level on d 10. The control and formalin groups had the highest and mesalazine had the lowest, respectively on d 10. On the 15^th d, mesalazine, betamethasone, and misoprostol had the lowest scores of betamethasone. CONCLUSION: Mesalazine, betamethasone, and misoprostol are the best topical agents for radiation proctitis and formalin has an inflammatory effect and should not be used.展开更多

METHODS: A retrospective review of patients aged 〉 18 years with a dia...AIM: To evaluate 20 adults with intussusception and to clarify the cause, clinical features, diagnosis, and management of this uncommon entity. METHODS: A retrospective review of patients aged 〉 18 years with a diagnosis of intestinal intussusception between 2000 and 2008. Patients with rectal prolapse, prolapse of or around an ostomy and gastroenterostomy intussusception were excluded. RESULTS: There were 20 rases of adult intussusception. Mean age was 47.7 years. Abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting were the most common symptoms. The majority of intussusceptions were in the small intestine (85%). There were three (15%) cases of colonic intussusception. Enteric intussusception consisted of five jejunojejunal cases, nine ileoileal, and four cases of ileocecal invagination. Among enteric intussusceptions, 14 were secondary to a benign process, and in one of these, the malignant cause was secondary to metastatic lung adenocarcinoma. All colonic lesions were malignant. All cases were treated surgically. CONCLUSION: Adult intussusception is an unusual and challenging condition and is a preoperative diagnostic problem. Treatment usually requires resection of the involved bowel segment. Reduction can be attempted in small-bowel intussusception if the segment involved is viable or malignancy is not suspected; however, a more careful approach is recommended in colonic intussusception because of a significantly higher coexistence of malignancy.展开更多
Stimulating renewable energy consumption is a major focus of the Sustainable Development Goals in combating climate change and global warming.The International Energy Agency estimates that renewable energy consumption...Stimulating renewable energy consumption is a major focus of the Sustainable Development Goals in combating climate change and global warming.The International Energy Agency estimates that renewable energy consumption should be doubled to achieve the COP21 targets.In this context,the question is whether renewable energy types promote the improvement of ecological quality and economic growth.Most studies have investigated the influence of renewable energy on ecological pollution using carbon dioxide emissions or ecological footprint indicators,which only represent the pollution caused by human consumption patterns,and these indicators neglect the supply side.Motivated by this point,this study uses the LCF(Load Capacity Factor)as an environmental indicator and examines the causality relationship among different types of renewable energy,income,and environmental quality in the USA,while also incorporating employment and capital stock into the analysis.Through using the Fourier causality test with the wavelet-decomposed series,the study explores for the validity of the renewable energy-based growth hypothesis and answers to the question of whether there is a causal effect of renewable energy types on environmental quality.The results demonstrate that there is a bidirectional causality between total renewable energy,wood,biomass,and economic growth as well as between these renewable energy types and the LCF.展开更多
This study analyzes the impact of biomass energy,financial development,and economic growth on environmental quality using the novel Fourier autoregressive distributed lag(ARDL)approach on annual data for the period 1...This study analyzes the impact of biomass energy,financial development,and economic growth on environmental quality using the novel Fourier autoregressive distributed lag(ARDL)approach on annual data for the period 1965–2018 in the United States(USA).The study analyzes the impact of related variables on the load capacity factor(LCF)as well as on indicators of environmental degradation such as carbon dioxide emissions and ecological footprint.The LCF is one of the most comprehensive environmental indicators to date,encompassing both biocapacity and ecological footprint.In this regard,this study contributes to the environmental economics literature by examining,for the first time,the impact of biomass energy on the LCF.The results of the cointegration test show that there is only a long-run relationship between the LCF and the independent variables.According to the Fourier ARDL results,biomass energy improves the environmental quality,while financial development has no effect on the LCF.Moreover,the increase in per capita income reduces the LCF.Furthermore,since the income elasticity is larger in the long run than in the short-run,the environmental Kuznets curve is validated.Therefore,the United States government should encourage the use of biomass and investment in this form of energy.展开更多

This paper presents an approach to recursively estimate the simplest linear model that approximates the time-varying local behaviors from imperfect(noisy and incomplete) measurements in the internet of things(IoT) bas...This paper presents an approach to recursively estimate the simplest linear model that approximates the time-varying local behaviors from imperfect(noisy and incomplete) measurements in the internet of things(IoT) based distributed decision-making problems. We first show that the problem of finding the lowest order model for a multi-input single-output system is a cardinality(l0) optimization problem, known to be NP-hard.To solve the problem a simpler approach is proposed which uses the recently developed atomic norm concept and the modified Frank-Wolfe(mFW) algorithm is introduced. Further, the paper computes the minimum data-rate required for computing the models with imperfect measurements. The proposed approach is illustrated on a building heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning(HVAC) control system that aims at optimizing energy consumption in commercial buildings using IoT devices in a distributed manner. The HVAC control application requires recursive thermal dynamical model updates due to frequently changing conditions and non-linear dynamics. We show that the method proposed in this paper can approximate such complex dynamics on single-board computers interfaced to sensors using unreliable communication channels. Real-time experiments on HVAC systems and simulation studies are used to illustrate the proposed method.展开更多
Objective: To determine quantitatively the amount of demineralization and the ability of commercially available products and an experimental cream to inhibit or reverse orthodontic related demineralization.Methods: A ...Objective: To determine quantitatively the amount of demineralization and the ability of commercially available products and an experimental cream to inhibit or reverse orthodontic related demineralization.Methods: A total of 20 patients who were 25–35 years old and having orthodontic treatment for 6–8 months were chosen.Caries risk assessments were done for each patient and ones with "moderate risk" were included.Patients with fixed orthodontic appliances were divided into 4 groups(5 patients each) including one control and 3 study groups.All patients used same toothpaste 2 times a day during the 3 weeks study period.Additional to the toothpaste first study group used MI Paste Plus(GC, Tokyo, Japan), second study group used Remin Pro(Voco, Cuxhaven, Germany) and third group used an experimental remineralizing cream per day for 3 weeks.Maxillary central and lateral incisors of each patient were examined by FluoreCam(Daraza Therametric Technologies, USA) device.The examinations were performed at baseline and at the end of 1st, 2nd and 3rd weeks.Results: According to the FluoreCam measurements the control group showed significant amount of demineralization at the end of 3 weeks, moreover the amount of demineralization has gradually increased in time.At the end of the study all 3 study groups showed significant amount of remineralization and the amount of remineralization for all the 3 study groups has gradually increased in time.However the amount of remineralization for 3rd study group was lesser than the 1st and 2nd study groups.The remineralization amounts for the 1st and 2 nd study groups were determined to be identical.Conclusions: This study demonstrated that demineralization is measurable around orthodontic brackets and the demineralization can be completely inhibited and/or reversed by the use of commercially available remineralization products.展开更多

Included are livers with steatosis, a metabolic abnormality that increases the likelihood of graft complications posttransplantation. After a brief introduction on the etiology, pathophysiology, categories and experimental models of hepatic steatosis, we herein review the methods to rescue steatotic donor livers before transplantation applied in clinical and experimental studies. The methods span the spectrum of encouraging donor weight loss, employing drug therapy, heat shock preconditioning, ischemia preconditioning and selective anesthesia on donors, and the treatment on isolated grafts during preservation. These methods work at different stages of transplantation process, although share similar molecular mechanisms including lipid metabolism stimulation through enzymes or nuclear receptor e.g. , peroxisomal proliferator-activated receptor, or anti-inflammation through suppressing cytokines e.g. , tumor necrosis factor-α, or antioxidant therapies to alleviate oxidative stress. This similarity of molecular mechanisms implies possible future attempts to reinforce each approach by repeating the same treatment approach at several stages of procurement and preservation, as well as utilizing these alternative approaches in tandem.展开更多

A newly developed Pb-free gadolinium-based glasses in compositions(80-x) B_2O_3-10 Si O_2-10 Ca O-x Gd_2O_3(where x = 15, 20, 25, 30 and35 mol%) had completely been investigated for their shielding efficiency with Geant4 simulation for mass attenuation coefficients and neutron total macroscopic cross section and by calculating exposure buildup factors.The exposure buildup factors for photon energy from 0.015 to 15 Me V had been calculated up to 40 mean free paths using five factors geometric progression method. The mass attenuation coefficients of the Pb-free glasses were simulated for energies from 223 to 2614 ke V and compared with the possible available experimental results. The neutron shielding efficiency of these glasses was discussed by calculating neutron total macroscopic cross section for energies from 1 e V to 14.1 Me V. Present investigations are found to be very useful for applications in nuclear engineering.展开更多

The influences of quantizing magnetic field on these quantities in two-band approximation of the Kane model are investigated. It is shown that the Fermi energy oscillates in a magnetic field. The period and positions of these oscillations are found as a function of film thickness and concentration of electrons. Cyclotron energy and cyclotron effective mass are investigated as a function of film thickness in detail The results obtained here are compared with experimental data on GaAs quantum wells.展开更多

In the study, the data obtained from c...The research was carried out with 9 triticale, 3 bread wheat, 3 durum wheat and 3 barley varieties and advanced lines in Tekirdag, Edime and Silivri locations during three years. In the study, the data obtained from combined variance analysis were performed and the significance of the differences between the averages was determined by LSD multiple comparison test. GGE biplot analysis and graphics were made by using the statistical package program. The genotypes G2 and G3 for thousand kernel weight, genotype G1 for the heading time and test weight, genotypes G14 and G15 for the maturation time, number of spikelets per spike and grain weight per spike and G13 for the plant height, spike length and grain yield per hectare decare revealed the highest values. The genotypes G6, GS, G4, G14, G9, G8 and G7 gave lower values than the average in terms of grain yield, whereas the other genotypes gave higher values than the general average. According to biplot graphical results, while locations 1 and 8 were closely related, locations 9, 2 and 7 were positively related to these environments. Although the location 7 is slightly different from the other 4 locations, these 5 locations can be seen as a mega environment. Genotypes G12, G2, G3 and G10 for this mega-environment showed the best performances. According to the results of grain yields obtained from 9 different locations, the location 5 was the most discriminating area while the location 1 was the least discriminating. Location 2 was the best representative location, while locations 4 and 7 were with the lowest representation capability. The locations that are both descriptive and representative are good test locations for the selection of adapted genotypes. Test environments, such as location 8, with low ability to represent are useful for selecting genotypes that perform well in specific regions if the target environments can be subdivided into sub-environments.展开更多
Objective:To explore the value of complete blood count(CBC),including neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio(NLR),platelet-lymphocyte ratio(PLR),and monocyte lymphocyte ratio(MLR)in diagnosis of testicular torsion(TT)and differe...Objective:To explore the value of complete blood count(CBC),including neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio(NLR),platelet-lymphocyte ratio(PLR),and monocyte lymphocyte ratio(MLR)in diagnosis of testicular torsion(TT)and differential diagnosis from epididymo-orchitis.Methods:The study was conducted at the Antalya Training and Research Hospital Emergency Department in Turkey with acute scrotal pain patients from January 1st,2016 to January 1st,2018.The patients were categorized into 3 groups:the TT group who underwent an operation for TT(n=70),the epididymo-orchitis group who received epididymo-orchitis treatment(n=120),and the healthy control group(n=100).NLR,PLR,and MLR of the three groups were analysed and compared.The optimum cut-off values of NLR,MLR,and PLR were analyzed.Results:Mean NLR and MLR values were significantly higher in the epididymo-orchitis group and the TT group compared to the control group(P<0.001).Receiver operating characteristic analysis revealed a sensitivity of 77.1%and a specificity of 80%for NLR(77.1)and a sensitivity of 68.2%and a specificity of 78%for PLR(124.80).Moreover,when MLR was used to differentiate the two treatment groups,the optimal cut-off value had a sensitivity of 67.1%and a specificity of 75%(AUC:0.677-0.826,P<0.001).Conclusions:NLR,PLR,and MLR might be associated with the diagnosis of TT.These parameters provide a useful and economical method to help diagnose TT in the emergency department.展开更多

The experimental layout was a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. The sowing rate was 500 seeds square meter. Sowing was done in plots of 6 rows (1.2 m × 5 m, spaced 20 cm apart) in Namlk Kemal University, Faculty of Agriculture, Field Crops Department experimental area. Two sowing times were performed. First sowing was made in November suggested usual (standard) and second one was made in January as delayed sown in order to push growing stages of plants into periods in which heat stress is expected will be effected. Sowing times were allotted to main-plots while genotypes were allotted to sub-plots. When the bread wheat varieties and lines used in the experiment are evaluated in terms of tolerance to high temperature, it was shown that Dropia and Nota varieties and CIMMYT-HTN 2014/15-2, CIMMYT-HTN 2014/15 -6, CIMMYT-HTN 2014/15 - 10 lines were better tolerance to high temperature. However, it was noticed that these genotypes were not included in the first groups in terms of grain yield. It is possible to utilize these genotypes as a genitor in cross-breeding programs for breeding studies for tolerance to high temperatures.展开更多
Objective:To investigate the relationship between upper gastrointestinal bleeding and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio(NLR),platelet-lymphocyte ratio(PLR),and lymphocyte-monocyte ratio(LMR),and examine whether they can be ...Objective:To investigate the relationship between upper gastrointestinal bleeding and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio(NLR),platelet-lymphocyte ratio(PLR),and lymphocyte-monocyte ratio(LMR),and examine whether they can be used as markers of inflammation.Methods:The retrospective single-center study included a total of 189 patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding admitted to the tertiary emergency department between January 2018 and January 2019.Besides,59 patients with similar demographic characteristics were selected as the control group.Besides,42 patients with active bleeding and 147 patients without active bleeding were categorized into two groups according to their endoscopy reports.The NLR,PLR,LMR values,potential risk factors,and demographic characteristics were analyzed.Results:The mean NLR levels were found significantly higher in the patient group compared to the control group(P<0.001),whereas the mean LMR levels were significantly lower in the patient group(P<0.001).The mean NLR and PLR levels were significantly higher in patients with active bleeding compared to those without active bleeding(P<0.001),whereas the mean LMR levels were significantly lower(P<0.001)for patients with active bleeding.The optimal cut-off value of NLR was found 2.1 for predicting uppergastrointestinal bleeding,with a sensitivity of 80.2%and specificity of 78.9%(AUC:0.840;P<0.001).Conclusions:NLR was determined to be a parameter that can be used as an indicator of active bleeding in patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding.展开更多

Materials/Methods: In order to determine effectiv...Purpose: Investigating the triple effect of doxorubicin, 5-fluorouracil, propranolol on MCF-7 (ER+, WTp53) breast cancer cell line with MTT test and survival analysis. Materials/Methods: In order to determine effective dosages of a combination of doxorubicin, 5-fluorouracil, propranolol on the MCF-7 cell line by using MTT and survival analysis technique. Result: IC50 values acquired by MTT tests are 0.01 mg/ml for doxorubicin, 6 mg/ml for 5-fluorouracil, 30 mg/ml for propranolol and 0.2/1/30 mg/ml (with previous respect) if all three agents are combined. It is found that the use of doxorubicin, 5-fluorouracil, and propranolol in combination is much effective than their single application. Discussion: Moderate concentrations of doxorubicin, 5-fluorouracil, and propranolol, if they are applied individually, showed high toxicity. When we used these drugs in combination;toxic effects lessened with respect to monotherapy. In the MCF-7 cell line, doxorubicin (IC50: 0.01 μM) increases cell death rates significantly and propranolol (IC50: 3 μM) has minimum effects in monotherapy in contrast to others. Propranolol is only superior to itself in combination therapy (IC50: 4 μM). However 5-fluorouracil (IC50: 30 μM) showed antagonistic effects with respect to other drugs. Additionally, having applied the three drugs in combination on the MCF-7 cell line for the first time in literature, it is highly possible to assess the application of doxorubicin, 5-fluorouracil and propranolol combination as a novel therapy option.展开更多
Background:Iodine deficiency (ID) during the fetal and neonatal periods can lead to neonatal hypothyroidism.This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of ID on the thyroid hormone level of newborns living in Turk...Background:Iodine deficiency (ID) during the fetal and neonatal periods can lead to neonatal hypothyroidism.This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of ID on the thyroid hormone level of newborns living in Turkey.Methods:Between 1998 and 2013,71 newborns with a urinary iodine concentration <100zg/L were recruited into the study.Data on thyroid volume,free triiodothyronine (fT3),free thyroxine (fT4),thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH),and thyroglobulin (Tg) were collected from all newborns,and on breast milk iodine from their mothers.Infants who were classified as having congenital hypothyroidism (TSH >40 mU/L and fT4 <8.5 pmol/L) were treated with levothyroxine (n=26,T group),while the remaining infants remained untreated (n=45,UT group).Thyroid hormones were subsequently measured 7-14 days later in a sub-sample of both treated and untreated infants.Results:The average values at the time of admission were as follows [median (min-max)].fT3:5.0 (2.8-7.1) pmol/L,fT4:7.7 (0.13-19.1) pmol/L,TSH:75 (14-426) mU/L,Tg:464 (226-1100) ng/mL,urinary iodine concentration (UIC):30 (0-61)zg/L,breast milk iodine levels:21 (10-150)zg/L,thyroid ultrasound (USG):1.10 (0.24-1.95) mL for the T group;and fF3:5.7 (1.7-12.7) pmol/L,fT4:16.2 (9.9-33.5) pmol/L,TSH:5.4 (0.63-41.8)mU/L,Tg:171 (15-2124) ng/mL,UIC:39 (0-90)pg/L,breast milk iodine levels:47 (10-120) μg/L,thyroid USG:0.75 (0.35-1.72) mL for the UT group.A significant difference was found between groups in respect to tT3,tT4,TSH and Tg levels.No significant difference in thyroid ultrasonography,UIC,and breast milk iodine levels was found between the two groups.The Tg levels of 50 out of 71 patients were measured,40 (80%) of whom had Tg levels above the normal range (101 ng/mL).Conclusions:In our country,despite the use of iodized salt,congenital hypothyroidism due to ID remains a problem.The Tg level of newborns can be used as a good indicator of ID.展开更多

Abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting were the most common symptoms. The majority of intussusceptions were in the small intestine (85%). There were three (15%) cases of colonic intussusception. Enteric intussusception consisted of five jejunojejunal cases, nine ileoileal, and four cases of ileocecal invagination. Among enteric intussusceptions, 14 were secondary to a benign process, and in one of these, the malignant cause was secondary to metastatic lung adenocarcinoma. All colonic lesions were malignant. All cases were treated surgically. CONCLUSION: Adult intussusception is an unusual and challenging condition and is a preoperative diagnostic problem. Treatment usually requires resection of the involved bowel segment. Reduction can be attempted in small-bowel intussusception if the segment involved is viable or malignancy is not suspected; however, a more careful approach is recommended in colonic intussusception because of a significantly higher coexistence of malignancy.
文摘Stimulating renewable energy consumption is a major focus of the Sustainable Development Goals in combating climate change and global warming.The International Energy Agency estimates that renewable energy consumption should be doubled to achieve the COP21 targets.In this context,the question is whether renewable energy types promote the improvement of ecological quality and economic growth.Most studies have investigated the influence of renewable energy on ecological pollution using carbon dioxide emissions or ecological footprint indicators,which only represent the pollution caused by human consumption patterns,and these indicators neglect the supply side.Motivated by this point,this study uses the LCF(Load Capacity Factor)as an environmental indicator and examines the causality relationship among different types of renewable energy,income,and environmental quality in the USA,while also incorporating employment and capital stock into the analysis.Through using the Fourier causality test with the wavelet-decomposed series,the study explores for the validity of the renewable energy-based growth hypothesis and answers to the question of whether there is a causal effect of renewable energy types on environmental quality.The results demonstrate that there is a bidirectional causality between total renewable energy,wood,biomass,and economic growth as well as between these renewable energy types and the LCF.
文摘This study analyzes the impact of biomass energy,financial development,and economic growth on environmental quality using the novel Fourier autoregressive distributed lag(ARDL)approach on annual data for the period 1965–2018 in the United States(USA).The study analyzes the impact of related variables on the load capacity factor(LCF)as well as on indicators of environmental degradation such as carbon dioxide emissions and ecological footprint.The LCF is one of the most comprehensive environmental indicators to date,encompassing both biocapacity and ecological footprint.In this regard,this study contributes to the environmental economics literature by examining,for the first time,the impact of biomass energy on the LCF.The results of the cointegration test show that there is only a long-run relationship between the LCF and the independent variables.According to the Fourier ARDL results,biomass energy improves the environmental quality,while financial development has no effect on the LCF.Moreover,the increase in per capita income reduces the LCF.Furthermore,since the income elasticity is larger in the long run than in the short-run,the environmental Kuznets curve is validated.Therefore,the United States government should encourage the use of biomass and investment in this form of energy.

文摘In this study,novel rhenium–boron neutronshielding high-temperature-resistant materials were designed.The considered samples,Re60–B40,Re58–B42,Re50–B50,and Re40–B60,with different concentrations of rhenium and boron were investigated to elucidate their neutron-shielding performances,and compare them with well-known neutron-shielding materials such as the 316 LN quality nuclear steel.In addition to the experimental studies,Monte Carlo simulations were performed using the FLUKA and GEANT4 codes,where 4.5-MeV neutrons emitted by a ^(241)Am–Be source were employed.Experimental equivalent dose rates,simulated track lengths,energy balances,and neutron mass absorption cross sections were discussed in detail.

文摘This paper presents an approach to recursively estimate the simplest linear model that approximates the time-varying local behaviors from imperfect(noisy and incomplete) measurements in the internet of things(IoT) based distributed decision-making problems. We first show that the problem of finding the lowest order model for a multi-input single-output system is a cardinality(l0) optimization problem, known to be NP-hard.To solve the problem a simpler approach is proposed which uses the recently developed atomic norm concept and the modified Frank-Wolfe(mFW) algorithm is introduced. Further, the paper computes the minimum data-rate required for computing the models with imperfect measurements. The proposed approach is illustrated on a building heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning(HVAC) control system that aims at optimizing energy consumption in commercial buildings using IoT devices in a distributed manner. The HVAC control application requires recursive thermal dynamical model updates due to frequently changing conditions and non-linear dynamics. We show that the method proposed in this paper can approximate such complex dynamics on single-board computers interfaced to sensors using unreliable communication channels. Real-time experiments on HVAC systems and simulation studies are used to illustrate the proposed method.
文摘Objective: To determine quantitatively the amount of demineralization and the ability of commercially available products and an experimental cream to inhibit or reverse orthodontic related demineralization.Methods: A total of 20 patients who were 25–35 years old and having orthodontic treatment for 6–8 months were chosen.Caries risk assessments were done for each patient and ones with "moderate risk" were included.Patients with fixed orthodontic appliances were divided into 4 groups(5 patients each) including one control and 3 study groups.All patients used same toothpaste 2 times a day during the 3 weeks study period.Additional to the toothpaste first study group used MI Paste Plus(GC, Tokyo, Japan), second study group used Remin Pro(Voco, Cuxhaven, Germany) and third group used an experimental remineralizing cream per day for 3 weeks.Maxillary central and lateral incisors of each patient were examined by FluoreCam(Daraza Therametric Technologies, USA) device.The examinations were performed at baseline and at the end of 1st, 2nd and 3rd weeks.Results: According to the FluoreCam measurements the control group showed significant amount of demineralization at the end of 3 weeks, moreover the amount of demineralization has gradually increased in time.At the end of the study all 3 study groups showed significant amount of remineralization and the amount of remineralization for all the 3 study groups has gradually increased in time.However the amount of remineralization for 3rd study group was lesser than the 1st and 2nd study groups.The remineralization amounts for the 1st and 2 nd study groups were determined to be identical.Conclusions: This study demonstrated that demineralization is measurable around orthodontic brackets and the demineralization can be completely inhibited and/or reversed by the use of commercially available remineralization products.
文摘BACKGROUND:Potassium permanganate is used clinically as an antiseptic and antifungal agent.Ingestion of potassium permanganate may result in damage to the upper gastrointestinal tract.Burns and ulceration of the mouth,esophagus and stomach occur due to its action.Emergency endoscopy is useful to assess the severity of damage and also to guide management.METHODS:We reported a patient presenting to the emergency department after suicidal ingestion of potassium permanganate.RESULTS:After treatment,the patient was discharged home on the 7th day after admission.CONCLUSION:Early emergency endoscopy should be considered to determine the extent of upper gastrointestinal damage in the emergency department.

文摘The shortage of donor livers has led to an increased use of organs from expanded criteria donors. Included are livers with steatosis, a metabolic abnormality that increases the likelihood of graft complications posttransplantation. After a brief introduction on the etiology, pathophysiology, categories and experimental models of hepatic steatosis, we herein review the methods to rescue steatotic donor livers before transplantation applied in clinical and experimental studies. The methods span the spectrum of encouraging donor weight loss, employing drug therapy, heat shock preconditioning, ischemia preconditioning and selective anesthesia on donors, and the treatment on isolated grafts during preservation. These methods work at different stages of transplantation process, although share similar molecular mechanisms including lipid metabolism stimulation through enzymes or nuclear receptor e.g. , peroxisomal proliferator-activated receptor, or anti-inflammation through suppressing cytokines e.g. , tumor necrosis factor-α, or antioxidant therapies to alleviate oxidative stress. This similarity of molecular mechanisms implies possible future attempts to reinforce each approach by repeating the same treatment approach at several stages of procurement and preservation, as well as utilizing these alternative approaches in tandem.

文摘The radiation shielding efficiency of material depends upon photon attenuation, exposure buildup factors and neutron removal capacity. A newly developed Pb-free gadolinium-based glasses in compositions(80-x) B_2O_3-10 Si O_2-10 Ca O-x Gd_2O_3(where x = 15, 20, 25, 30 and35 mol%) had completely been investigated for their shielding efficiency with Geant4 simulation for mass attenuation coefficients and neutron total macroscopic cross section and by calculating exposure buildup factors.The exposure buildup factors for photon energy from 0.015 to 15 Me V had been calculated up to 40 mean free paths using five factors geometric progression method. The mass attenuation coefficients of the Pb-free glasses were simulated for energies from 223 to 2614 ke V and compared with the possible available experimental results. The neutron shielding efficiency of these glasses was discussed by calculating neutron total macroscopic cross section for energies from 1 e V to 14.1 Me V. Present investigations are found to be very useful for applications in nuclear engineering.
文摘Fasciola hepatica, a leaf shaped trematode that is common in cattle, sheep and goats, is acquired by eating raw water plants like watercress or drinking water infected with the encysted form of the parasite. The varied clinical presentations of fascioliasis still make a high index of suspicion mandatory. Besides having a wide spectrum of hepatobiliary symptoms like obstructive jaundice, cholangitis and liver cirrhosis, the parasitic infection also has extrabiliary manifestations. Until recently, extrahepatic fascioliasis has been reported in the subcutaneous tissue, brain, lungs, epididymis, inguinal lymph nodes, stomach and the cecum. In this report, a strange manifestation of the fasciola infection in a site other than the liver, a colonic fascioliasis, is presented.
文摘The Fermi energy, cyclotron energy and cyclotron effective mass of degenerate electron gas in a sizeoquantized semiconductor thin film with non-parabolic energy bands are studied. The influences of quantizing magnetic field on these quantities in two-band approximation of the Kane model are investigated. It is shown that the Fermi energy oscillates in a magnetic field. The period and positions of these oscillations are found as a function of film thickness and concentration of electrons. Cyclotron energy and cyclotron effective mass are investigated as a function of film thickness in detail The results obtained here are compared with experimental data on GaAs quantum wells.
文摘The research was carried out with 9 triticale, 3 bread wheat, 3 durum wheat and 3 barley varieties and advanced lines in Tekirdag, Edime and Silivri locations during three years. In the study, the data obtained from combined variance analysis were performed and the significance of the differences between the averages was determined by LSD multiple comparison test. GGE biplot analysis and graphics were made by using the statistical package program. The genotypes G2 and G3 for thousand kernel weight, genotype G1 for the heading time and test weight, genotypes G14 and G15 for the maturation time, number of spikelets per spike and grain weight per spike and G13 for the plant height, spike length and grain yield per hectare decare revealed the highest values. The genotypes G6, GS, G4, G14, G9, G8 and G7 gave lower values than the average in terms of grain yield, whereas the other genotypes gave higher values than the general average. According to biplot graphical results, while locations 1 and 8 were closely related, locations 9, 2 and 7 were positively related to these environments. Although the location 7 is slightly different from the other 4 locations, these 5 locations can be seen as a mega environment. Genotypes G12, G2, G3 and G10 for this mega-environment showed the best performances. According to the results of grain yields obtained from 9 different locations, the location 5 was the most discriminating area while the location 1 was the least discriminating. Location 2 was the best representative location, while locations 4 and 7 were with the lowest representation capability. The locations that are both descriptive and representative are good test locations for the selection of adapted genotypes. Test environments, such as location 8, with low ability to represent are useful for selecting genotypes that perform well in specific regions if the target environments can be subdivided into sub-environments.
文摘Objective:To explore the value of complete blood count(CBC),including neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio(NLR),platelet-lymphocyte ratio(PLR),and monocyte lymphocyte ratio(MLR)in diagnosis of testicular torsion(TT)and differential diagnosis from epididymo-orchitis.Methods:The study was conducted at the Antalya Training and Research Hospital Emergency Department in Turkey with acute scrotal pain patients from January 1st,2016 to January 1st,2018.The patients were categorized into 3 groups:the TT group who underwent an operation for TT(n=70),the epididymo-orchitis group who received epididymo-orchitis treatment(n=120),and the healthy control group(n=100).NLR,PLR,and MLR of the three groups were analysed and compared.The optimum cut-off values of NLR,MLR,and PLR were analyzed.Results:Mean NLR and MLR values were significantly higher in the epididymo-orchitis group and the TT group compared to the control group(P<0.001).Receiver operating characteristic analysis revealed a sensitivity of 77.1%and a specificity of 80%for NLR(77.1)and a sensitivity of 68.2%and a specificity of 78%for PLR(124.80).Moreover,when MLR was used to differentiate the two treatment groups,the optimal cut-off value had a sensitivity of 67.1%and a specificity of 75%(AUC:0.677-0.826,P<0.001).Conclusions:NLR,PLR,and MLR might be associated with the diagnosis of TT.These parameters provide a useful and economical method to help diagnose TT in the emergency department.
文摘Thirty bread wheat genotypes were used as material during the 2014-2015 cropping season. The experimental layout was a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. The sowing rate was 500 seeds square meter. Sowing was done in plots of 6 rows (1.2 m × 5 m, spaced 20 cm apart) in Namlk Kemal University, Faculty of Agriculture, Field Crops Department experimental area. Two sowing times were performed. First sowing was made in November suggested usual (standard) and second one was made in January as delayed sown in order to push growing stages of plants into periods in which heat stress is expected will be effected. Sowing times were allotted to main-plots while genotypes were allotted to sub-plots. When the bread wheat varieties and lines used in the experiment are evaluated in terms of tolerance to high temperature, it was shown that Dropia and Nota varieties and CIMMYT-HTN 2014/15-2, CIMMYT-HTN 2014/15 -6, CIMMYT-HTN 2014/15 - 10 lines were better tolerance to high temperature. However, it was noticed that these genotypes were not included in the first groups in terms of grain yield. It is possible to utilize these genotypes as a genitor in cross-breeding programs for breeding studies for tolerance to high temperatures.
文摘Objective:To investigate the relationship between upper gastrointestinal bleeding and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio(NLR),platelet-lymphocyte ratio(PLR),and lymphocyte-monocyte ratio(LMR),and examine whether they can be used as markers of inflammation.Methods:The retrospective single-center study included a total of 189 patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding admitted to the tertiary emergency department between January 2018 and January 2019.Besides,59 patients with similar demographic characteristics were selected as the control group.Besides,42 patients with active bleeding and 147 patients without active bleeding were categorized into two groups according to their endoscopy reports.The NLR,PLR,LMR values,potential risk factors,and demographic characteristics were analyzed.Results:The mean NLR levels were found significantly higher in the patient group compared to the control group(P<0.001),whereas the mean LMR levels were significantly lower in the patient group(P<0.001).The mean NLR and PLR levels were significantly higher in patients with active bleeding compared to those without active bleeding(P<0.001),whereas the mean LMR levels were significantly lower(P<0.001)for patients with active bleeding.The optimal cut-off value of NLR was found 2.1 for predicting uppergastrointestinal bleeding,with a sensitivity of 80.2%and specificity of 78.9%(AUC:0.840;P<0.001).Conclusions:NLR was determined to be a parameter that can be used as an indicator of active bleeding in patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding.
文摘Purpose: Investigating the triple effect of doxorubicin, 5-fluorouracil, propranolol on MCF-7 (ER+, WTp53) breast cancer cell line with MTT test and survival analysis. Materials/Methods: In order to determine effective dosages of a combination of doxorubicin, 5-fluorouracil, propranolol on the MCF-7 cell line by using MTT and survival analysis technique. Result: IC50 values acquired by MTT tests are 0.01 mg/ml for doxorubicin, 6 mg/ml for 5-fluorouracil, 30 mg/ml for propranolol and 0.2/1/30 mg/ml (with previous respect) if all three agents are combined. It is found that the use of doxorubicin, 5-fluorouracil, and propranolol in combination is much effective than their single application. Discussion: Moderate concentrations of doxorubicin, 5-fluorouracil, and propranolol, if they are applied individually, showed high toxicity. When we used these drugs in combination;toxic effects lessened with respect to monotherapy. In the MCF-7 cell line, doxorubicin (IC50: 0.01 μM) increases cell death rates significantly and propranolol (IC50: 3 μM) has minimum effects in monotherapy in contrast to others. Propranolol is only superior to itself in combination therapy (IC50: 4 μM). However 5-fluorouracil (IC50: 30 μM) showed antagonistic effects with respect to other drugs. Additionally, having applied the three drugs in combination on the MCF-7 cell line for the first time in literature, it is highly possible to assess the application of doxorubicin, 5-fluorouracil and propranolol combination as a novel therapy option.
文摘Background:Iodine deficiency (ID) during the fetal and neonatal periods can lead to neonatal hypothyroidism.This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of ID on the thyroid hormone level of newborns living in Turkey.Methods:Between 1998 and 2013,71 newborns with a urinary iodine concentration <100zg/L were recruited into the study.Data on thyroid volume,free triiodothyronine (fT3),free thyroxine (fT4),thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH),and thyroglobulin (Tg) were collected from all newborns,and on breast milk iodine from their mothers.Infants who were classified as having congenital hypothyroidism (TSH >40 mU/L and fT4 <8.5 pmol/L) were treated with levothyroxine (n=26,T group),while the remaining infants remained untreated (n=45,UT group).Thyroid hormones were subsequently measured 7-14 days later in a sub-sample of both treated and untreated infants.Results:The average values at the time of admission were as follows [median (min-max)].fT3:5.0 (2.8-7.1) pmol/L,fT4:7.7 (0.13-19.1) pmol/L,TSH:75 (14-426) mU/L,Tg:464 (226-1100) ng/mL,urinary iodine concentration (UIC):30 (0-61)zg/L,breast milk iodine levels:21 (10-150)zg/L,thyroid ultrasound (USG):1.10 (0.24-1.95) mL for the T group;and fF3:5.7 (1.7-12.7) pmol/L,fT4:16.2 (9.9-33.5) pmol/L,TSH:5.4 (0.63-41.8)mU/L,Tg:171 (15-2124) ng/mL,UIC:39 (0-90)pg/L,breast milk iodine levels:47 (10-120) μg/L,thyroid USG:0.75 (0.35-1.72) mL for the UT group.A significant difference was found between groups in respect to tT3,tT4,TSH and Tg levels.No significant difference in thyroid ultrasonography,UIC,and breast milk iodine levels was found between the two groups.The Tg levels of 50 out of 71 patients were measured,40 (80%) of whom had Tg levels above the normal range (101 ng/mL).Conclusions:In our country,despite the use of iodized salt,congenital hypothyroidism due to ID remains a problem.The Tg level of newborns can be used as a good indicator of ID.
