In this study the nano size TiO2 is synthesized using citric acid and alpha dextrose and the enhancement effect of TiO2 nanoparticle on the antibacterial activity of different antibiotics was evaluated against Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). During the present study, different concentrations of nano-scale TiO2 were tested to find out the best concentration that can have the most effective antibacterial property against the MRSA culture. Disk diffusion method was used to determine the antibacterial activity of these antibiotics in the absence and presence of sub inhibitory concentration of TiO2 nano particle. A clinical isolate of MRSA, isolated from Intensive Care Unit (ICU) was used as test strain. In the presence of sub-inhibitory concentration of TiO2 nanoparticle (20 μg/disc) the antibacterial activities of all antibiotics have been increased against test strain with minimum 2 mm to maximum 10mm. The highest increase in inhibitory zone for MRSA was observed against pencillin G and amikacin (each 10 mm). Conversely, in case of nalidixic acid, TiO2 nanoparticle showed a Synergic effect on the antibacterial activity of this antibiotic against test strain. These results signify that the TiO2 nanoparticle potentate the antimicrobial action of beta lactums, cephalosporins, aminoglycosides, glycopeptides, macrolids and lincosamides, tetracycline a possible utilization of nano compound in combination effect against MRSA.展开更多

The management of infected pancreatic necrosis alongside concomitant colorectal cancer has never been described in literature.CASE SUMMARY A 77 years old gentleman presented to the Emergency Department of our hospital complaining of ongoing abdominal pain for 8 h. The patient had clinical features of pancreatitis with a raised lipase of 3810 U/L, A computed tomography(CT) abdomen confirmed pancreatitis with extensive peri-pancreatic edema. During the course of his admission, the patient had persistent high fevers and delirium thought secondary to infected necrosis, prompting the commencement of broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy with Piperacillin/Tazobactam. Subsequent CT abdomen confirmed extensive pancreatic necrosis(over 70%). Patient was managed with supportive therapy, nutritional support and gut rest initially and improved over the course of his admission and was discharged 42 d post admission. He represented 24 d following his discharge with fever and chills and a repeat CT abdomen scan noted gas bubbles within the necrotic pancreatic tissue thereby confirming infected necrotic pancreatitis. This CT scan also revealed asymmetric thickening of the rectal wall suspicious for malignancy. A rectal cancer was confirmed on flexible sigmoidoscopy. The patient underwent two endoscopic necrosectomies and was treated with intravenous antibiotics and was discharged after 28 d.Within 1 wk post discharge, the patient commenced a course of neoadjuvant radiotherapy and subsequently underwent concomitant chemotherapy prior to undergoing a successful Hartmann's procedure for treatment of his colorectal cancer.CONCLUSION This case highlights the efficacy of endoscopic necrosectomy, early enteral feeding and targeted antibiotic therapy for timely management of infected necrotic pancreatitis. The prompt resolution of pancreatitis permitted the patient to undergo neoadjuvant tre展开更多

The code is based on the major physical processes of radiation damage on incorporation of atomic collision cascade and limited to 10 MeV neutron energy. A phenomenological relation for radiation swelling is also derived. Based on the calculation of swelling, DPA (displacement per atom), defect production efficiency and effective threshold energy, Efff from the data of MC simulation, SiC is inferred to be a highly radiation resistant material when compared with Nb and Ni metals which are used in composition of several reactor steels. Experimental results of hill-hock density measured using AFM (atomic force microscopy), also confirm radiation resistant behavior of SiC.展开更多

The authors analyzed a 17-year time period using remote sensing to develop land-cover classification for the watershed. Climate, soil and terrain data for the watershed were used as input in the SWAT (soil and water analysis tool) to quantify and compare the impacts on hydrologic processes. The model was calibrated to a two-year record of stream discharge measurements. The results show significant increase in forest-cover on hills (13%). However, the hydrological response is not very significant considering the changes in forest-cover, the surface runoff and percolation ratios only changed by 2% and 1% over time. Installment of earthen irrigation ponds in the outlets of sub-basin with maximum runoff had provided the most significant hydrologic improvements and could provide irrigation water to increase crop yield on remaining cropland. The study will provide information to the local government to aid decision-making in sustainable reforestation programs resulting in better hydrologic functioning for sustainable water resource management.展开更多

文摘The rivers draining from the Himalayan range distribute enormous amount of fresh water to the people living in downstream regions.Trace metals flowed with river water can lead to serious impact on ecological system and human health.Nevertheless, the documentation on trace elements of Himalayan rivers is inadequately documented. The current study deals with the spatial and temporal variability of the major and trace elements of Ganga river water in epirhithron, metarhithron and hyporhithron zone belonging to Himalayan segment.Water samples from nineteen monitoring locations were collected in pre-monsoon(May-June),monsoon(AugustSeptember)and post-monsoon(December)seasons and subjected to be assessed for 20 elements(Ag,Al,Ba,Cd,Ca,Cr,Cu,Fe,Ga,K,Mn,Mg,Na,Ni,Pb,Sr,Th,U,Zn,and Zr)using ICP-OES(Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometer).Different water pollution indexes such as HPI(Heavy Metal Pollution Index),MI(Metal Index)and PI(Pollution Index)were used to describe current water quality status at each monitoring station under particular classified ecological zone. The studied stations in hyporhithron zone had the value of Metal Index(MI>1),indicating threshold of warning.Further, the highest values of HPI in hyporhithron zone correspond to poor water quality status.Sites with poor water quality were also found to be contaminated as per the Pollution Index(PI),exhibiting high concentrations for element(Fe).However, the epirhithron and metarhithron zone in Himalayan segment showed excellent water quality mainly contributed from natural sources.Cluster Analysis(CA)and Principal Component Analysis(PCA)were applied to identify the main influential sources for Ganga river water pollution. The Kriging interpolation method was also applied to prepare spatial distribution map of computed indexes(HPI,MI,and PI).With the help of index of local Moran’s I(LMI),identified spatial clusters and spatial outliers revealed the elevated concentration of most elements in hyporhithron zone. The dataset presented in this study wo
文摘MC (Monte Carlo) simulation code, JA-IPU is used to study radiation damage of SiC irradiated to spallation neutron and AmBe neutron spectra. Experimental results of hill-hock density measured using AFM (atomic force microscopy), also confirm radiation resistant behavior of SiC.
文摘The important enhancement in the structural, dielectric and optical properties of pure polymer and CdSe incorporated polyvinyl pyrrolidone has been reported in this paper. The surface morphology of CdSe/PVP nanocomposite film is studied by using scanning electron microscopy(SEM).The chemical composition of different elements has been reported using energy dispersive X-ray(EDX)spectrum.The structure of polymer nanocomposite is determined with the help of X-ray diffraction(XRD)spectrum and is observed to be hexagonal.Particle size, intercrystalline separation, interplanner spacing, lattice parameters, strain and dislocation factors are calculated using XRD results.Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR)and Photoluminescence(PL)analysis have been studied in order to check the possible interaction between CdSe quantum dots and polyvinyl pyrrolidone(PVP)matrix. The ac conductivity of CdSe/PVP nanocomposite is found to be higher as compared to pure polymers. The highest value of conductivity observed at 60203 Hz and at 523 K is found to be 3:72105 Sm1.Comparative study of dielectric constant, dielectric losses, dissipation factor, electric modulus and impedance has been performed. The semi-circles in impedance measurement for both materials show the bulk electrical properties that result in single relaxation process in CdSe/PVP nanocomposite.
文摘To determine whether reforestation efforts in the denuded hills have significant impacts on hydrology in the Xinjiang River watershed, the authors examined eight land-cover scenarios to compare hydrologic responses and to provide a conceptual basis for restoration practices. The study will provide information to the local government to aid decision-making in sustainable reforestation programs resulting in better hydrologic functioning for sustainable water resource management.

文摘Forest fires are one of the major environmental issues globally. In Nepal, substantial amounts of forest biomass and carbon are lost due to fire.Nepal’s high value lowland forests are particularly vulnerable to fire. However, there are limited studies on the estimation of biomass loss and carbon emissions due to fire. Thus, this research addresses the information gap in the tropical mixed broad-leaved forests of Nawalparasi District. The forests were divided into three strata:Lower Tropical Sal Mixed Broad-leaved Forest,Hill Sal Forest and Riverine Forest, and from these four community-managed forests were selected for estimating above ground biomass.Ninety-two sample plots were set out for above ground biomass estimation in burnt and non-burnt areas.Forest fire incidences from 2001 to 2017 were acquired from the MODIS fire data.Forest biomass and carbon emissions were estimated using standard allometric equations. The fuel fraction consumed during the fire was estimated through field surveys during the forest fire season. The results show that every year, over 3158 ha of forests are burnt, resulting in some 1108 tons of carbon emissions, equivalent to approximately 4066 t CO_(2),2581 t CO and 1474 t CH4.Among the forests, the Hill Sal Forest was more vulnerable to fire.Forest management strategies, therefore, should include construction of fire lines and conservation ponds along with capacity building and raising awareness among local communities and stakeholders.
文摘Lipoma is a benign neoplasm of the soft tissue that originates in mature adipocytes. Even though it is a very common tumor, it is relatively uncommon in oral cavity. It represents about 1% to 4% of all benign tumors in oral cavity (12). This article describes a case of a 39 years old male with an intraoral pedunculated mass in the right side of hard palate which was histopathologically proved as a simple lipoma.

文摘In malaria-endemic regions, people often get exposed to various pathogens simultaneously, generating coinfection scenarios. In such scenarios, overlapping symptoms pose serious diagnostic challenges. The delayed diagnosis may lead to an increase in disease severity and catastrophic events.Recent coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)has affected various areas globally, including malaria-endemic regions. The Plasmodium and SARS-CoV-2 co-infection and its effect on health are yet unexplored. We present a case report of a previously healthy,middle-aged individual from the malaria-endemic area who suffered SARS-CoV-2 and Plasmodium falciparum co-infection.The patient developed severe disease indications in a short time period. The patient showed neurological symptoms, altered hematological as well as liver-test parameters, and subsequent death in a narrow time span.We hereby discuss the various aspects of this case regarding treatment and hematological parameters.Further,we have put forward perspectives related to the mechanism behind severity and neurological symptoms in this fatal parasite-virus co-infection case.In malaria-endemic regions, due to overlapping symptoms, suspected COVID-19 patients should also be monitored for diagnosis of malaria without any delay. The SARS-CoV-2 and Plasmodium co-infection could increase the disease severity in a short time span.In treatment, dexamethasone may not help in severe cases having malaria as well as COVID-19 positive status and needs further exploration.

文摘Seven zoysiagrass genotypes were evaluated for salt tolerance in a greenhouse study. The plant materials included Zoysia matrella'Diamond',Z.japonica'Palisades',three Z.matrella×Z.japonica hybrids DALZ 1701,DALZ 1713,and'Innovation',and two Z.minima×Z.matrella hybrids(DALZ 1309 and'Lazer').Treatments included a control(nutrient solution)and two saline treatments representing moderate and high salt levels. The electrical conductivity(EC)was 1.3 dS m−1 for control and moderate(EC5)and high salinity(EC10)were 5.0 and 10.0 dS m−1,respectively.At the end of eight-weeks of treatment, the relative(percent control)shoot dry weight(DW)was greatest in'Diamond'in EC10,and the relative root DW was greatest in DALZ 1309 in EC5.A cluster analysis based on the relative tissue dry weight identified'Diamond',DALZ 1309,and DALZ 1713 as the most salt tolerant genotypes.Additionally, the green leaf area(GLA)index of'Diamond'and DALZ 1713 were 98.8%and 100%,respectively,indicating excellent visual appearance under high salt levels.Bi-weekly clipping DW showed that'Diamond'continued to produce biomass throughout the duration of the study under the EC10 treatment.Sodium(Na^(+))and chloride(Cl−)content in the shoot tissue of the seven turfgrass genotypes indicated that lower concentrations corresponded to greater salt tolerance indicating exclusion of Na+and Cl−from the shoot tissue.Taken together, the genotypes'Diamond'and DALZ 1713 were determined to be the most salt tolerant and recommended for use in areas with high soil or water salinity.
