Using allantoin (ATN ) as a marker for reactive oxygen species (ROS), oxidative stress during antituberculous (anti-TB) therapy was compared in 10 young and 9 elderly patients.Before treatment, ATN plasma concentrations in patients were similar to that of volunteers. Administration of a combination of isoniazid (INH ), rifampicin (RIF) and pyrazinamid e (PZA) increased plasma ATN in both groups of patients. ATN concentrations (M± SE) at six hours were higher (P <0.05 ) in elderly than in young patients on day one,8.22 ± 1.50 vs 1.89 ± 0.98 μg/mL); day 30, (5.85 ± 0.82 vs 0.87 ± 0.57 μg/mL; and day 90, (4.84 ± 1.24 vs 0.52 ± 0.50μg/mL). Because total amount of ATN excreted was similar in both groups on the three occasions, more ATN was formed in elderly than young patients. In conclusion, there was more oxidative stress in elderly than young patients. It is thereby suggested that Anti-TB drugs induce formation of ROS and elderly patients are at a greater risk of toxicity probably because of poor antioxidant mechanisms 展开更多

The rare earth elements are unusual when defining giant-sized ore deposits,as resources are often quoted as total rare earth oxide,but the importance of a deposit may be related to the grade for individual,or a limited group of the elements.Taking the total REE resource,only one currently known deposit(Bayan Obo) would class as giant(〉1.7×10^7 tonnes contained metal),but a range of others classify as large(〉1.7×10^6 tonnes).With the exception of unclassified resource estimates from the Olympic Dam 10 CG deposit,all of these deposits are related to alkaline igneous activity- either carbonatites or agpaitic nepheline syenites.The total resource in these deposits must relate to the scale of the primary igneous source,but the grade is a complex function of igneous source,magmatic crystallisation,hydrothermal modification and supergene enrichment during weathering.Isotopic data suggest that the sources conducive to the formation of large REE deposits are developed in subcontinental lithospheric mantle,enriched in trace elements either by plume activity,or by previous subduction.The reactivation of such enriched mantle domains in relatively restricted geographical areas may have played a role in the formation of some of the largest deposits(e.g.Bayan Obo).Hydrothermal activity involving fluids from magmatic to meteoric sources may result in the redistribution of the REE and increases in grade,depending on primary mineralogy and the availability of ligands.Weathering and supergene enrichment of carbonatite has played a role in the formation of the highest grade deposits at Mount Weld(Australia) and Tomtor(Russia).For the individual REE with the current highest economic value(Nd and the HREE),the boundaries for the large and giant size classes are two orders of magnitude lower,and deposits enriched in these metals(agpaitic systems,ion absorption deposits) may have significant economic impact in the near future. 展开更多

Soil acidity is an important parameter that can regulate ecosystem structure and function.However,a quantitative understanding of the relationships between soil pH and environmental factors remains unavailable.In this study,relationships of soil pH with both climatic and edaphic factors in alpine grasslands on the Tibetan Plateau,China were quantified using data obtained from a regional soil survey during 2001-2004.Our results showed that soil pH decreased along the gradient of both mean annual temperature and precipitation.Likewise,soil pH exhibited consistent negative correlations with soil moisture and silt content.However,soil organic and inorganic carbon contents played opposite roles in shaping patterns of soil pH:the accumulation of soil organic matter led to higher soil acidity,while the existence of soil inorganic matter was favorable for maintaining higher soil alkalinity.The variation partitioning analysis indicated that the combination of climatic and edaphic variables explained 74.3%of the variation in soil acidity.These results suggest that soil pH could be predicted from routinely-measured variables,allowing a robust pedotransfer function to be developed.The pedotransfer function may facilitate land surface models to generate more reliable predictions on ecosystem structure and function around the world. 展开更多

The Lugiin Gol nepheline syenite intrusion, Mongolia, hosts a range of carbonatite dikes mineralized in rare-earth elements(REE). Both carbonatites and nepheline syenite-fluorite-calcite veinlets are host to a previously unreported macroscale texture involving pseudo-graphic intergrowths of fluorite and calcite. The inclusions within calcite occur as either pure fluorite, with associated REE minerals within the surrounding calcite, or as mixed calcite-fluorite inclusions, with associated zirconosilicate minerals. Consideration of the nature of the texture, and the proportions of fluorite and calcite present(~29 and 71 mol%,respectively), indicates that these textures most likely formed either through the immiscible separation of carbonate and fluoride melts, or from cotectic crystallization of a carbonatefluoride melt. Laser ablation ICP-MS analyses show the pure fluorite inclusions to be depleted in REE relative to the calcite. A model is proposed, in which a carbonate-fluoride melt phase enriched in Zr and the REE, separated from a phonolitic melt, and then either unmixed or underwent cotectic crystallization to generate an REE-rich carbonate melt and an REE-poor fluoride phase. The separation of the fluoride phase(either solid or melt) may have contributed to the enrichment of the carbonate melt in REE, and ultimately its saturation with REE minerals. Previous data have suggested that carbonate melts separated from silicate melts are relatively depleted in the REE, and thus melt immiscibility cannot result in the formation of REE-enriched carbonatites. The observations presented here provide a mechanism by which this could occur, as under either model the textures imply initial separation of a mixed carbonate-fluoride melt from a silicate magma. The separation of an REEenriched carbonate-fluoride melt from phonolitic magma is a hitherto unrecognized mechanism for REE-enrichment in carbonatites, and may play an important role in the formation of shallow magmatic REE deposits. 展开更多

背景:为了使病人更好地配合治疗并改善他们的营养状态,有人曾建议在进食的同时服用抗结核药(这可以减少与吡嗪酰胺有关的呕吐)。然而食物有可能降低经口给与的利福平和异烟肼的生物利用度。目的和方法;在27名结核病病人(男性15,女性12)... 背景:为了使病人更好地配合治疗并改善他们的营养状态,有人曾建议在进食的同时服用抗结核药(这可以减少与吡嗪酰胺有关的呕吐)。然而食物有可能降低经口给与的利福平和异烟肼的生物利用度。目的和方法;在27名结核病病人(男性15,女性12)进行了三重交叉药代动力学研究以比较不进食(对照)和进食高碳水化合物(CHO)或高脂质(LIPID)饮食情况下利福平、异烟肼和吡嗪酰胺的生物利用度。结果:CHO饮食降低了异烟肼的生物利用度。测得的最高药物浓度(Cm)减少了20%(P=0.0002)。8小时内的浓度-时间曲线下面积(AUC8)减少了19%(P=0.01)。CHO饮食使利福平达到最高浓度(Tmax)的时间延长了21%(P=0.03)。LIPID饮食使异烟肼的Cm降低了9%(P=0.03)。每次吃饭的个体病人的生物利用度与不进食的对照的生物利用度进行了比较。Cm或AUC8下降超过20%被认为有显著意义。占很大比率的病人中(33-56%),异烟肼和利福平的生物利用度都因进食而有所下降。结论:同时进食对药物治疗结核病可能有重大的不良影响。认为药物与饮食同时服用可取的观点是可疑的。 展开更多

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS)is a poorly treated multifactorial neurodegenerative disease associated with multiple cell types and subcellular organelles.As with other multifactorial diseases,it is likely that drugs will need to target multiple disease processes and cell types to be effective.We review here the role of Janus kinase(JAK)/Signal transducer and activator of transcription(STAT)signalling in ALS,confirm the association of this signalling with fundamental ALS disease processes using the BenevolentAI Knowledge Graph,and demonstrate that inhibitors of this pathway could reduce the ALS pathophysiology in neurons,glia,muscle fibres,and blood cells.Specifically,we suggest that inhibition of the JAK enzymes by approved inhibitors known as Jakinibs could reduce STAT3 activation and modify the progress of this disease.Analysis of the Jakinibs highlights baricitinib as a suitable candidate due to its ability to penetrate the central nervous system and exert beneficial effects on the immune system.Therefore,we recommend that this drug be tested in appropriately designed clinical trials for ALS. 展开更多

Many studies have examined motor impairments using voxel-based lesion symptom mapping, but few are reported regarding the corresponding relationship between cerebral cortex injury and lower limb motor impairment analyzed using this technique. This study correlated neuro- nal injury in the cerebral cortex of 16 patients with chronic stroke based on a voxel-based lesion symptom mapping analysis. Neuronal injury in the corona radiata, caudate nucleus and putamen of patients with chronic stroke could predict walking speed. The behavioral measure scores were consistent with motor deficits expected after damage to the cortical motor system due to stroke. These findings suggest that voxel-based lesion symptom mapping may provide a more accurate prognosis of motor recovery from chronic stroke according to neuronal injury in cerebral motor cortex. 展开更多

本文介绍加拿大科学工作者关于新生仔猪哺乳方法的研究结果。习惯上,饲养员护理弱小仔猪时,都是辅助小猪吃母猪前部乳头的奶,这样能保证弱小仔猪能吃上含有防病的免疫因子的初乳。但是,加拿大科学工作者研究证实,如果让初生仔猪能从几... 本文介绍加拿大科学工作者关于新生仔猪哺乳方法的研究结果。习惯上,饲养员护理弱小仔猪时,都是辅助小猪吃母猪前部乳头的奶,这样能保证弱小仔猪能吃上含有防病的免疫因子的初乳。但是,加拿大科学工作者研究证实,如果让初生仔猪能从几个乳头吃初乳,那么就可以获得较多的免疫因子。据测定,出生后12小时仔猪的血清免疫球蛋白G(lgG),从5个乳头吃奶的仔猪的血清lgG含量较高。仔猪免疫球蛋白的水平与仔猪出生次序有关。研究结果表明,后产的仔猪的lgG水平较先产出者的低。前8头仔猪间血清lgG水平差别很小,第8头之后则急剧下降。现在,猪育种者开始重视培育多产母系,希望窝产仔数在8头以上。这就应注意防止母猪转移给仔猪的抗病免疫力下降的问题。对后出生的仔猪要给予特别护理。初乳中的免疫球蛋白是母猪受到疾病侵袭或免疫注射后,产生的蛋白质抗体。仔猪在出生后几小时内能吃到初乳,对其成活和生长是至关重要的。 展开更多
