A major obstacle for the transfer of natural lightweight structures to technical solutions is their peculiar geometry. Since natural lightweight structures possess irregularities and often have extremely complex forms due to elaborate growth processes, it is usually necessary to simplify their design principles. This step of simplification/abstraction has been used in different biomimetic methods, but so far, it has an arbitrary component, i.e. it crucially depends on the competence of the person who executes the abstraction. This paper describes a new method for abstraction and specialization of natural micro structures for technical lightweight compo- nents. The new method generates stable lightweight design principles by using topology optimization within a design space of preselected biological archetypes such as diatoms or radiolarian. The resulting solutions are adapted to the technical load cases and production processes, can be created in a large variety, and may be further optimized e.g. by using parametric optimization.展开更多

The ISCr may lead to the battery thermal runaway and is hard to be detected in the early stage. In this work, a new ISCr detection method based on the symmetrical loop circuit topology(SLCT) is introduced. The SLCT ensures that every battery has the same priority in the circuit and every battery will contribute the same amount of short-circuit current to the ISCr once the ISCr happens. The ISCr battery could be identified by the combination of the ratio of the short-circuit currents and the sign of the short-circuit currents. The recursive least square method is adopted for the real-time application and the optimized ammeters allocation is derived from the mathematic deduction. The battery pack based on the individual DP(dual polarization) battery model is established to verify the ISCr detection method. The 1–1000 Ω s ISCr(the early stage ISCr) can be effectively detected within 1–125 s. The SLCT provides the possibility of new battery pack designs and new battery management methods. The proposed ISCr detection method shows excellent effectiveness and efficiency on the identification of the ISCr battery in the early stage.展开更多

We treated breast cancer cells with osteocyte-derived conditioned medium(CM) and fluid flow-treated conditioned medium(FFCM) with 0.25 Pa and 1 Pa shear stress. Notably, CM and FFCM at 0.25 Pa induced the mesenchymal-to-epithelial transition(MET), but FFCM at 1 Pa induced the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition(EMT). This suggested that the effects of fluid flow on conditioned media depend on flow intensity. Fluorescence resonance energy transfer(FRET)-based evaluation of Src activity and vinculin molecular force showed that osteopontin was involved in EMT and MET switching. A mouse model of tumorinduced osteolysis was tested using dynamic tibia loadings of 1, 2, and 5 N. The low 1 N loading suppressed tumor-induced osteolysis, but this beneficial effect was lost and reversed with loads at 2 and 5 N, respectively. Changing the loading intensities in vivo also led to changes in serum TGFβ levels and the composition of tumor-associated volatile organic compounds in the urine.Collectively, this study demonstrated the critical role of intensity-dependent mechanotransduction and osteopontin in tumorosteocyte communication, indicating that a biophysical factor can tangibly alter the behaviors of tumor cells in the bone microenvironment.展开更多

This study was conducted to determine whether the overexpression of HER2/neu oncogene is associated with poor outcome in uterine serous papillary endometrial cancer, which is a highly aggressive variant of endometrial cancer, and whether a racial difference in the frequency of HER2/neu overexpression may contribute to the disparity in endometrial cancer survival. Study design: Immunohistochemical evaluation was used to examine HER2/neu expression in paraffin blocks from 27 women with stage IA to IV uterine serous papillary endometrial cancer. Univariable analysis was performed and followed by multivariable analysis with Cox’ s proportional hazard model to evaluate whether HER2/neu expression was associated with poor outcome in uterine serous papillary endometrial cancer. Results: Black patients tended to be younger (P =. 02) and have higher HER2/neu expression than white patients (trend P =. 02). Seven of 10 black patients (70% ) showed heavy (3+ ) expression, compared with 4 of 17 white patients (24% ; P =. 04). The association of heavy HER2/neu expression with race persisted after age was controlled through stratification (P =. 05). Earlier deaths from uterine serous papillary endometrial cancer were seen among heavy HER2/neu expressers (P =. 002), black patients (P =. 04), and patients ≤ 65 years old (P =. 04). However, multivariate Cox regression showed that short survival was associated significantly with heavy HER2/neu expression (P =. 02) but not with age (P =. 07) or race (P =. 35), which indicates that HER2/neu expression accounted for much of the race disparity in survival in this patient population. Conclusion: Overexpression of HER2/neu in uterine serous papillary endometrial cancer is an independent variable that is associated with poor outcome, occurs more frequently in black women, and may contribute to racial disparity in survival. HER2/neu expression may guide clinic展开更多

This study investigated effects of replacing 100% and 50% sweat losses with 5% carbohydrate liquid or ice-slurry solution on core temperature during simulated mining conditions. Five randomized treadmill trials were performed with: no fluid replacement (NF), 100% (100 ICE) and 50% (50 ICE) sweat loss replaced with ice-slurry (~-1°C) solution and 100% (100 LIQ) and 50% (50 LIQ) sweat loss replaced with liquid (~+4°C) solution. Time to exhaustion was longer in 100 ICE followed by 100 LIQ, 50 ICE, 50 LIQ and NF. Change in rectal temperature was least in 100 ICE followed by 100 LIQ, 50 ICE, 50 LIQ and NF. Ingestion of ice-slurry resulted in longer time to exhaustion and slower rates of change in rectal temperature. It is recommended that ice-slurry drinks be provided to personnel to lower heat strain during hot working conditions.展开更多

An average of 2-3 strains per patient was isolated and the vac4 genotype was analyzed by PCR and 3% agarose electrophoresis. Some genotypes were checked by DNA sequencing. RESULTS: The most prevalent vacA genotype in Chilean patients was slb ml (76%), followed by sla ml (21%). In oontrast, the s2 m2 genotype was scarcely represented (3%). The slb ml genotype was found most frequently linked to gastropathies (P〈0.05) rather than ulcers. Ulcers were found more commonly in male and older patients. Curiously, patents IMng in dties located North and far South of Santiago, thecapital and largest Chilean city, carried almost exclusively strains with the slb ml genotype. In contrast, patients from Santiago and cities located South of Santiago carded strains with either one or both sla ml and slb ml genotypes. Regarding the s2 m2 genotype, comparison with GenBank sequences revealed that Chilean s2 sequence was identical to those of Australian, American, and Colombian strains but quite different from those of Alaska and India. CONCLUSION: Differences in geographic distribution of the s and m vacA alleles in Chile and a relationship of slb ml genotype with gastritis were found. Sequence data in part support a hispanic origin for the vacA genotype. Asymmetric distribution of genotypes slb ml and s2 m2 recedes H Pyloristrain distribution in Spain and Portugal.展开更多
