Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) is a zoonotic hookworm infection of dogs and cats commonly found in low-income countries in the tropical and subtropical regions and travellers to these regions. It is caused by invasion of the skin by the parasitic larvae of hookworms which, after entry, move under the skin causing an inflammatory reaction resulting in a single or multiple tracks. Patients commonly present with a progressive, itchy, erythematous serpiginous skin rash, affecting the feet, although it can affect any other parts of the body. The diagnosis is mainly clinical, based on history and physical examination. Treatment of this condition can effectively be achieved with either albendazole or ivermectin. We present a case of a 7-year-old boy who was diagnosed with CLM after presenting to the hospital with a history of a progressive itchy rash with tracks on the left foot. Although CLM is a self-limiting disease, it causes a lot of suffering and, therefore, it is of public concern. There is a need to increase awareness of this disease among health workers, and to implement and promote preventive measures against the disease since the cause is known. 展开更多

Myiasis is the infestation of live human and vertebrate animals with maggots that feed on the host’s dead or living tissue, depending on the life cycle of the fly. We present a case of Holoprosencephaly (HPE) with cyclopia and proboscis that was delivered in Katutura Intermediate Hospital, Namibia. The mother was a 24-year-old, G2P1 with no known comorbid conditions and no history of illicit or over-the-counter drug use. Her first pregnancy was uneventful and resulted in delivery of a normal baby. She had not attended antenatal clinic by the time of her presentation with the index pregnancy and the abnormality was picked up from the booking sonar. She went into spontaneous preterm labour and delivery before the planned date for admission for termination of pregnancy and physical examination of the baby confirmed the diagnosis of Holoprosencephaly with cyclopia. The pictures presented in this article were taken after obtaining parental consent. 展开更多

Other sites for genital tuberculosis include the Fallopian tubes and the endometrium. Genital tuberculosis and other types of tuberculosis outside the lungs are referred to as extra-pulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB). Genital tuberculosis presents with unspecific symptoms and signs;and because of this, most often, the diagnosis is made incidentally during investigations for other conditions that present with similar clinical pictures. Therefore, misdiagnosis and wrong treatment are not uncommon. We present a case of tuberculosis of the uterine cervix which was incidentally diagnosed when the patient was being investigated for cervical cancer, and successfully treated with a 6-months rifampicin regimen, 2RHZE/4HRE. Health providers have a duty to highly suspect tuberculosis of the cervix among women who present with abnormal vaginal discharge, abnormal vaginal bleeding and post-coital bleeding especially in countries where HIV and TB are endemic. If properly diagnosed and correctly treated, tuberculosis of the uterine cervix is curable. 展开更多
