Expression of single vapC gene in Escherichia coli resulted in inhibition of bacterial growth, whereas co-expression of vapBC restored the growth effectively. This phenotype is typical for three other characterized toxin-antitoxin systems of bacteria, i.e., mazEF[1], relBE[2] and chpIK[3]. The VapC proteins of bacteria and a thermophilic archeae, Solfolobus tokodaii, form a structurally distinguished group of toxin different from the other known toxins of bacteria. Phylogenetic analysis of both toxins and antitoxins of all categories indicated that although toxins were evolved from divergent sources and may or may not follow their speciation paths (as indicated by their 16s RNA sequences), co-evolution with their antitoxins was obvious.展开更多

Even though medicinal plants are all over the country and are of great benefits to a lot of Ghanaians, there is little or no proper documentation on medicinal plants use in Ghana;how it all started and where it is today, as well as what is being done to promote its use and some challenges being faced with its use as a country. This paper therefore sought to assess and compile generally, Medicinal plants use in Ghana;focusing on the use of some plant medicine, development and advancement in the herbal medicine practice, as well as associated challenges. Available literature and information on medicinal plants use in Ghana were compiled by searching through electronic database such as Google Scholar, PubMed, Science direct, SciFinder and other relevant websites, as well as books and reports. A brief history, measures taken to develop and advance plant medicine use and some specific challenges facing plant medicine practice and use in the county have been discussed in detail in this write-up. This compilation is believed to bring to book the value of some medicinal plants in Ghana and the efforts being made to promote herbal drugs to complement orthodox medication.展开更多

The goal of this work was to determine the level of the synergistic effect of the inhibitor mixture and to explain the nature of this effect. Corrosion properties of the inhibitor layer were studied using the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), while the resistance to pit formation and pit growth was studied by applying potentiodynamic polarisation tests. The results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDS) showed that the size of pits formed in naturally aged aluminium alloy was smaller than that formed in artificially aged alloy. The synergistic effect of the inhibitor mixture on corrosion properties of naturally aged alloy was observed throughout 96 h, and in later phases of testing of artificially aged alloy. The synergistic effect of the inhibitor mixture was not noticed on pit formation and pit growth.展开更多

The first model is based on approximate analytical expressions of the electromagnetic lbrces as they have been compiled in earlier versions of the IEC standard 60076-5. The second model is based on a finite element model of the transformer using the software FEMM (Finite Element Method Magnetics). The paper shows how valid the analytical model is for design purposes. Results have been obtained and compared from both models in a number of actual power distribution transformers. It is possible to conclude that the analytical formulation provides satisfactory results for the design of power transformers compared to detailed finite element models. A tool has been designed for this purpose and the main features of it will be described in the paper.展开更多
