M...AIM: To evaluate the efficiency and safety of combined recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) and lactulose for treatment and/or prevention of multiple organ dysfunction in patients with chronic severe hepatitis B. METHODS: Forty-eight inpatients with chronic severe hepatitis B were randomly divided into rhGH group (n = 28)and control group (n = 20). In rhGH group, 4-4.5 IU of rhGH was injected intramuscularly once daily for 2-4 wk,and 100 mL of enema containing 30 mL of lactulose, 2 g of metronidazole and 0.9% saline was administered every 2 d for 2-4 wk. Their symptoms and complications were noted. Liver and kidney functions were analyzed by an Olympus analyzer. Serum GH, IGF-1, IGFBP1 and IGFBP3 were measured by ELISA.RESULTS: Clinical symptoms of 90% of these patients in rhGH group were obviously improved. The total effectiveness in rhGH group was better than that in control group (75% vs40%, P<0.05). After 2- and 4-wk treatment of rhGH respectively, serum albumin (26.1±4.1 vs 30.2±5.3,31.9±5.1 g/L), prealbumin (79.6±28.0 vs 106.6±54.4,108.4±55.0 g/L), cholesterol (76.3±16.7 vs 85.6±32.3,96.1±38.7 mg/dL), and IGFBP1 (56.8±47.2 vs 89.7±50.3ng/mL after 2 wk) were significantly increased compared to control group (P<0.05). However, serum GH was decreased. The increase of serum IGF1 and IGFBP3 after rhGH treatment was also observed.CONCLUSION: rhGH in combination with lactulose may be beneficial to the prevention and treatment of multiple organ dysfunction in patients with chronic severe hepatitis.展开更多

Compared with thetraditional control, the proposed control strategy gets better temperature tracing accuracy andexhibits some energy saving feature. Nano-3D printing has obtained widespread attention owing to its capacity to manufacture end-use components with nano-scale features in recent years.Multiphoton lithography(MPL)is one of the most promising 3D nanomanuf...Nano-3D printing has obtained widespread attention owing to its capacity to manufacture end-use components with nano-scale features in recent years.Multiphoton lithography(MPL)is one of the most promising 3D nanomanufacturing technologies,which has been widely used in manufacturing micro-optics,photonic crystals,microfluidics,meta-surface,and mechanical metamaterials.Despite of tremendous potential of MPL in laboratorial and industrial applications,simultaneous achievement of high throughput,high accuracy,high design freedom,and a broad range of material structuring capabilities remains a long-pending challenge.To address the issue,we propose an acousto-optic scanning with spatial-switching multispots(AOSS)method.Inertia-free acousto-optic scanning and nonlinear swept techniques have been developed for achieving ultrahigh-speed and aberration-free scanning.Moreover,a spatial optical switch concept has been implemented to significantly boost the lithography throughput while maintaining high resolution and high design freedom.An eight-foci AOSS system has demonstrated a record-high 3D printing rate of 7.6×10^(7)voxel s^(-1),which is nearly one order of magnitude higher than earlier scanning MPL,exhibiting its promise for future scalable 3D nanomanufacturing.展开更多

METHODS: One hundred and eighty-two patients with SARS were em...AIM: To evaluate the hepatic function in patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and possible causes of hepatic disorder in these patients. METHODS: One hundred and eighty-two patients with SARS were employed in a retrospective study that investigated hepatic dysfunction. Liver alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) were analyzed in these patients. Patients with different hospital treatments were further investigated. RESULTS: Of the 182 patients, 128(70.3%) had abnormal ALT activity, 57(31.3%) had abnormal AST activity and 87(47.8%) had abnormal LDH activity. The peak of elevated hepatic enzyme activities occurred between the sixth day and the tenth day after the first day of reported fever. Of the 182 patients, 160(87.9%) had been treated with antibiotics, 137(75.2%) with Ribavirin, and 115(63.2%) with methylpredisolone. There was no statistically significant correlation between the duration of Ribavirin treatement and hepatic dysfunction. CONCLUSION: Abnormal liver functions were common in patients with SARS and could be associated with virus replication in the liver.展开更多

In order to eliminate the permanent offset between the setpoint and the process output in the presence of the load disturbance, a novel error compensation method is proposed. Then predictive functional control of integrating process is designed. The method given generates a simple control structure, which can significandy reduce online computation. Furthermore, the tuning of the controller is fairly straightforward. Simulation results indicate that the designed control system is relatively robust to the parameters variation of the process.展开更多

METHODS A total of 510 patients with stagell and operable stagelll breast cancer were div...OBJECTIVE To evaluate the 10-year curative effects of short-term intensive neoadjuvant chemotherapy for operable breast cancer. METHODS A total of 510 patients with stagell and operable stagelll breast cancer were divided into group A (preoperative neoadjuvant chemotherapy 251 cases) and group B (postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy 259 cases). The patients in group A received short-term and intensive neoadjuvant chemotherapy for 4 weeks followed by modified radical mastectomy two weeks after the chemotherapy. The postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy began within two weeks after surgery. The same chemotherapeutic regimen was used for both groups. RESULTS For stage Ⅲ in group A the 5-year overall survival rate (OS) and disease-free survival rate (DFS) were 59.2% and 54.9% respectively which were higher than those in group B (28.3% and 20.8% respectively, P<0.05). The 10-year OS and DFS were 78.1% and 73.5% respectively for stage Ⅱ in group A which were higher than those in group B (68.4% and 60.7%, P<0.05). The 10-year OS and DFS were 42.3% and 40.4% respectively forstage Ⅲ in group A which were higher than those in group B (20.4% and 18.4% respectively, P<0.05). CONCLUSION The results showed that intensive neoadjuvant chemotherapy can improve the 10-year survival for patients with stage Ⅱ and operablestage Ⅲ breast cancer.展开更多
OBJECTIVE The aim of the present study was to determine the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptor, kinase insert domain containing receptor (KDR), and their significance in regulatin...OBJECTIVE The aim of the present study was to determine the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptor, kinase insert domain containing receptor (KDR), and their significance in regulating tumor angiogenesis in the early stages of cervical cancer.METHODS Using the immunohistochemical SP method, the expression of VEGF and KDR was determined in the cancer cells. In addition, the microvessel density (MVD), labeled by CD34 in the tumor stroma, was examined in 18 cases of cervical intraepithelial neoplasms (ClN), 75 cases of early invasive cervix carcinomas (ICC) and 15 specimens of normal cervical epithelium (NCE).RESULTS In ICC cases, VEGF and KDR were mainly expressed in the cellular membrane and/or cytoplasm of tumor cells, while expression of CD34 was found mainly in the vascular epithelial cells of the tumor stroma. The positive expression rate of VEGF and KDR, and the MVD increased remarkably from NCE through CIN to ICC (P<0.01). For the ICC group, in the patients with positive expression of VEGF and KDR, the MVD was significantly higher than those with negative expression of VEGF and KDR (P<0.05). Expression of VEGF in ICC was positively related to KDR expression (r=0.56, P<0.01 ). The MVD was also positively related to both the expression of VEGF (r=0.60, P<0.01), and KDR (r=0.33, P<0.01). In the cases with both positive expression of VEGF and KDR, the MVD was significantly higher than those in which there was negative expression of both (P<0.01 ).CONCLUSION Expression of VEGF and its receptor KDR plays a key role in up-regulating tumor angiogenesis in cervical carcinoma. Co-overexpression of VEGF and KDR results in rapid tumor vasculogenesis. Detection of co-expression of VEGF and KDR may be of value in further understanding tumor angiogenesis and in searching for new targets for anti-angiogenesis therapy in invasive carcinoma of the cervix.展开更多

In species from the Solanaceae, Plantaginaceae and Rosaceae, S-RNase and SLF (S-locus F-box) proteins have been shown to control the female and male specificity of SI, respectively. However, little is known about structure features of the SLF protein apart from its conserved F-box domain. Here we show that the SLF C-terminal region possesses a novel ubiquitin-binding domain (UBD) structure conserved among the SLF protein family. By using an ex vivo system of Nicotiana benthamiana, we found that the UBD mediates the SLF protein turnover by the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. Furthermore, we detected that the SLF protein was directly involved in S-RNase degradation. Taken together, our results provide a novel insight into the SLF structure and highlight a potential role of SLF protein stability and degradation in S-RNase-based self-incompatibility.展开更多
AIM: To evaluate the immediate and long-term results in a series of patients with highly symptomatic polycystic liver disease (PLD) treated by combined hepatic resection with cystic fenestration.METHODS: We reviewed o...AIM: To evaluate the immediate and long-term results in a series of patients with highly symptomatic polycystic liver disease (PLD) treated by combined hepatic resection with cystic fenestration.METHODS: We reviewed our recent experience with a combined hepatic resection-fenestration procedure in seven highly symptomatic patients with PLD. Clinical data, liver manifestation of computed tomography (CT), and morbidity were recorded pre- and post-operation. Follow-up was made by clinical and CT examinations in all patients.RESULTS: Symptomatic relief and reduction in abdominal girth were obtained in all patients during an average followup period of 20.4 mo. CT scans confirmed post-resection hypertrophy of the spared liver and lack of significant cyst progression. All patients had mild to severe ascites. Two patients were complicated with pleural effusion.CONCLUSION: Some highly symptomatic patients with massive PLD may benefit from combined hepatic resection and fenestration at acceptable risk. To stitch the dissected hepatic ligaments could prevent the instable remnant liver from kinking and collapsing.展开更多

Hpylori infection was detected based on three different tests:the urease test,Warthin-Starry staining and culture. Hpylori status was defined as positive when both the urease test and histology or culture alone was positive.RESULTS:Sensitivity,specificity,positive predictive and negative predictive values and the total accuracy of ImmunoCard STAT HpSA for the diagnosis of Hpyloriinfection were 92.6% (25/27), 88.5% (23126), 89.3% (25/28), 92%(23/25) and 90.6% (48/53), respectively.CONCLUSION:The stool antigen test, ImmunoCard STAT HpSA,is a simple noninvasive and accurate test for the diagnosis of Hpylori infection.展开更多
