A reflection-mode photoacoustic microscope(PAM) for rat brain imaging in vivo is constructed.A pulsed laser is used as an excitation source,and a focused ultrasound transducer is adopted to collect the photoacoustic signal.Raster scanning is applied to acquire three-dimensional(3D) data.The obtained measurements of the lateral and axial resolutions of the microscope are 45 and 15μm,respectively.The imaging depth in the chicken breast tissue is 3.1 mm at a signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) of 20 dB without any signal averaging.The imaging speed is 30 A-line/s.Experimental results in vivo demonstrate the capability of 3D imaging of the brain vessels of the rat after removing the skull. 展开更多

To produce fusion reactions efficiently,thermonuclear plasmas have to reach extremely high temperatures,which is incompatible with their coming into contact with material surfaces.Confinement of plasmas using magnetic fields has progressed significantly in the last years,particularly in the tokamak configuration.Unfortunately,all tokamak devices,and particularly metallic ones,are plagued by catastrophic events called disruptions.Many disruptions are preceded by anomalies in the radiation patterns,particularly in ITER-relevant scenarios.These specific forms of radiation emission either directly cause or reveal the approaching collapse of the configuration.Detecting the localization of these radiation anomalies in real time requires an innovative and specific elaboration of bolometric measurements,confirmed by visible cameras and the inversion of sophisticated tomographic algorithms.The information derived from these measurements can be interpreted in terms of local power balances,which suggest a new quantity,the radiated power divided by the plasma internal energy,to determine the criticality of the plasma state.Combined with robust indicators of the temperature profile shape,the identified anomalous radiation patterns allow determination of the sequence of macroscopic events leading to disruptions.A systematic analysis of JET campaigns at high power in deuterium,full tritium,and DT,for a total of almost 2000 discharges,proves the effectiveness of the approach.The warning times are such that,depending on the radiation anomaly and the available actuators,the control system of future devices is expected to provide enough notice to enable deployment of effective prevention and avoidance strategies. 展开更多

The model was tested in the T-326 hypersonic wind tunnel (ITAM) at freestream Mach number M = 5.95. Mean and fluctuation wall characteristics of the boundary layer are measured at 0°, 2°, 3° and 4° angles of attack for different stagnation pressures. Pulsation measurements are carried out by means of ALTP sensor. Pressure and temperature distributions along the model are obtained, and transition beginning and end locations have been found. Boundary layer stabilization with the increase of angle of attack and the decrease of stagnation pressure is observed. High frequency pulsations inherent to hypersonic boundary layer (second mode) have been detected. 展开更多

Resonant light pressure effects can open new degrees of freedom in optical manipulation with microparticles,but they have been traditionally considered as relatively subtle effects.Using a simplified two-dimensional model of surface electromagnetic waves evanescently coupled to whispering gallery modes(WGMs)in transparent circular cavities,we show that under resonant conditions the peaks of the optical forces can approach theoretical limits imposed by the momentum conservation law on totally absorbing particles.Experimentally,we proved the existence of strong peaks of the optical forces by studying the optical propulsion of dielectric microspheres along tapered microfibers.We observed giant optical propelling velocities,0.45 mm s21 for some of the 15-20 mm polystyrene microspheres in water for guided powers limited at,43 mW.Such velocities exceed previous observations by more than an order of magnitude,thereby providing evidence for the strongly enhanced resonant optical forces.We analyzed the statistical properties of the velocity distribution function measured for slightly disordered(,1%size variations)ensembles of microspheres with mean diameters varying from 3 to 20 mm.These results demonstrate a principal possibility of optical sorting of microspheres with the positions of WGM resonances overlapped at the wavelength of the laser source.They can be used as building blocks of the lossless coupled resonator optical waveguides and various integrated optoelectronics devices. 展开更多

Photoacoustic molecular imaging,combined with the reporter-gene technique,can provide a valuable tool for cancer research.The expression of the lacZ reporter gene can be imaged using photoacoustic imaging following the injection of X-gal,a colorimetric assay for the lacZ-encoded enzymeβ-galactosidase.Dual-wavelength photoacoustic microscopy was used to non-invasively image the detailed morphology of a lacZ-marked 9L gliosarcoma and its surrounding microvasculature simultaneously in vivo,with a superior resolution on the order of 10μm.Tumor-feeding vessels were found,and the expression level of lacZ in tumor was estimated.With future development of new absorption-enhancing reporter-gene systems,we anticipate this strategy can lead to a better understanding of the role of tumor metabolism in cancer initiation,progression,and metastasis,and in its response to therapy. 展开更多

The photoacoustic effect was employed to generate short-duration quasi-unipolar acoustic pressure pulses in both planar and spherically focused geometries.In the focal region,the temporal profile of a pressure pulse can be approximated by the first derivative of the temporal profile near the front transducer surface,with a time-averaged value equal to zero.This approximation agreed with experimental results acquired from photoacoustic transducers with both rigid and free boundaries.For a free boundary,the acoustic pressure in the focal region is equal to the sum of a positive pressure that follows the spatial profile of the optical energy deposition in the medium and a negative pressure that follows the temporal profile of the laser pulse. 展开更多

The main reasons for the occurrence of temperature error and perspective directions of decreasing of its value are presented by improving the device design based on the phenomenon of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and numerical methods of processing the results of measurements by this device. The most essential influence on changes in results of measurements can be rendered by temperature changes in the analyte refractive index. It is shown that the application of the integrated temperature stabilization of the device with the test substance, and numerical processing of the measurement results for compensation of temperature changes of the test substance and the use of film heaters it is possible to reduce the measurement error of the refractive index of the analyte at least 30 times from 2.4 × 10-4 to 7.6 × 10-6. 展开更多

The analysis of experimental data demonstrates that platelets and neutrophils are involved in the no-reflow phenomenon,also known as microvascular obstruction(MVO).However,studies performed in the isolated perfused hearts subjected to ischemia/reperfusion(I/R)do not suggest the involvement of microembolization and microthrombi in this phenomenon.The intracoronary administration of alteplase has been found to have no effect on the occurrence of MVO in patients with acute myocardial infarction.Consequently,the major events preceding the appearance of MVO in coronary arteries are independent of microthrombi,platelets,and neutrophils.Endothelial cells appear to be the target where ischemia can disrupt the endothelium-dependent vasodilation of coronary arteries.However,reperfusion triggers more pronounced damage,possibly mediated by pyroptosis.MVO and intra-myocardial hemorrhage contribute to the adverse post-infarction myocardial remodeling.Therefore,pharmacological agents used to treat MVO should prevent endothelial injury and induce relaxation of smooth muscles.Ischemic conditioning protocols have been shown to prevent MVO,with L-type Ca2+channel blockers appearing the most effective in treating MVO. 展开更多

The acute myocardial infarction(AMI)and sudden cardiac death(SCD),both associated with acute cardiac ischemia,are one of the leading causes of adult death in economically developed countries.The development of new approaches for the treatment and prevention of AMI and SCD remains the highest priority for medicine.A study on the cardiovascular effects of chronic hypoxia(CH)may contribute to the development of these methods.Chronic hypoxia exerts both positive and adverse effects.The positive effects are the infarct-reducing,vasoprotective,and antiarrhythmic effects,which can lead to the improvement of cardiac contractility in reperfusion.The adverse effects are pulmonary hypertension and right ventricular hypertrophy.This review presents a comprehensive overview of how CH enhances cardiac tolerance to ischemia/reperfusion.It is an in-depth analysis of the published data on the underlying mechanisms,which can lead to future development of the cardioprotective effect of CH.A better understanding of the CH-activated protective signaling pathways may contribute to new therapeutic approaches in an increase of cardiac tolerance to ischemia/reperfusion. 展开更多

The role of reactive oxygen species(ROS)in ischemic and reperfusion(I/R)injury of the heart has been discussed for more than 40 years.It has been demonstrated that reperfusion triggers a multiple increase in free radical generation in the isolated heart.Antioxidants were found to have the ability to mitigate I/R injury of the heart.However,it is unclear whether their cardioprotective effect truly depends on the decrease of ROS levels in myocardial tissues.Since high doses and high concentrations of antioxidants were experimentally used,it is highly likely that the cardioprotective effect of antioxidants depends on their interaction not only with free radicals but also with other molecules.It has been demonstrated that the antioxidant N-2-mercaptopropionyl glycine or NDPH oxidase knockout abolished the cardioprotective effect of ischemic preconditioning.Consequently,there is evidence that ROS protect the heart against the I/R injury. 展开更多

Acute myocardial infarction(AMI)is one of the main reasons of cardiovascular disease-related death.The introduction of percutaneous coronary intervention to clinical practice dramatically decreased the mortality rate in AMI.Adverse cardiac remodeling is a serious problem in cardiology.An increase in the effectiveness of AMI treatment and prevention of adverse cardiac remodeling is difficult to achieve without understanding the mechanisms of reperfusion cardiac injury and cardiac remodeling.Inhibition of pyroptosis prevents the development of postinfarction and pressure overload-induced cardiac remodeling,and mitigates cardiomyopathy induced by diabetes and metabolic syndrome.Therefore,it is reasonable to hypothesize that the pyroptosis inhibitors may find a role in clinical practice for treatment of AMI and prevention of cardiac remodeling,diabetes and metabolic syndrome-triggered cardiomyopathy.It was demonstrated that pyroptosis interacts closely with apoptosis and autophagy.Pyroptosis could be inhibited by nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor with a pyrin domain 3 inhibitors,caspase-1 inhibitors,microRNA,angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors,angiotensinⅡreceptor blockers,and traditional Chinese herbal medicines. 展开更多

The results of experiments on measuring the energy spectra of alpha particles in reactions with heavy ions are presented.The measurements were performed using the high-resolution magnetic analyzer MAVR with beams of ^(48)Ca(280 MeV)and ^(56)Fe(320 and 400 MeV)on ^(181)Ta and ^(238)U targets at an angle of 0°.A strong dependence of the double differential cross sections for production of alpha particles on the atomic number of the target nucleus was observed,which indicates that fast alpha particles are mainly emitted from the target nucleus;this conclusion was also confirmed by calculations within the time-dependent Schrödinger equation approach.An analysis of the obtained experimental data was carried out within the model of moving sources modified to consider the kinematic limits for two-body and three-body exit channels. 展开更多

We call this equation “the generalized logistic equation”. The Gutenberg-Richter frequency-magnitude formula was derived from the solution of the generalized logistic equation as an asymptotic case for the approximation of large magnitudes. To illustrate how the solution of the generalized logistic equation works, it was used to approximate the observed cumulative distribution of earthquakes in four different geological provinces: the Central Atlantic (40N - 25N, 5W - 35W), Canary Islands, Magellan Mountains (20N - 9S, 148E - 170E), and the Sea of Japan. This approximation showed an excellent correlation between the theoretical curves and observed data for earthquakes of magnitudes 1 < m < 9. 展开更多
