The hormone triggers stomatal clos...The mode of abscisic acid (ABA) action, and its relations to drought adaptive responses in particular, has been a captivating area of plant hormone research for much over a decade. The hormone triggers stomatal closure to limit water loss through transpiration, as well as mobilizes a battery of genes that presumably serve to protect the cells from the ensuing oxidative damage in prolonged stress. The signaling network orchestrating these various responses is, however, highly complex. This review summarizes several significant advances made within the last few years. The biosynthetic pathway of the hormone is now almost completely elucidated, with the latest identification of the ABA4 gene encoding a neoxanthin synthase, which seems essential for de novo ABA biosynthesis during water stress. This leads to the interesting question on how ABA is then delivered to perception sites. In this respect, regulated transport has attracted renewed focus by the unexpected finding of a shoot-to-root translocation of ABA during drought response, and at the cellular level, by the identification of a B-galactosidase that releases biologically active ABA from inactive ABA-glucose ester. Surprising candidate ABA receptors were also identified in the form of the Flowering Time Control Protein A (FCA) and the Chloroplastic Magnesium Protoporphyrin-IX Chelatase H subunit (CHLH) in chloroplast-nucleus communication, both of which have been shown to bind ABA in vitro. On the other hand, the protein(s) corresponding to the physiologically detectable cell-surface ABA receptor(s) is (are) still not known with certainty. Genetic and physiological studies based on the guard cell have reinforced the central importance of reversible phosphorylation in modulating rapid ABA responses. We examined 44 publishe...Adjustment of ecosystem root respiration to warmer climatic conditions can alter the autotrophic portion of soil respiration and influence the amount of carbon available for biomass production. We examined 44 published values of annual forest root respiration and found an increase in ecosystem root respiration with increasing mean annual temperature (MAT), but the rate of this cross-ecosystem increase (Q10 = 1.6) is less than published values for short-term responses of root respiration to temperature within ecosystems (Q10 = 2-3). When specific root respiration rates and root biomass values were examined, there was a clear trend for decreasing root metabolic capacity (respiration rate at a standard temperature) with increasing MAT. There also were tradeoffs between root metabolic capacity and root system biomass, such that there were no instances of high growing season respiration rates and high root biomass occurring together. We also examined specific root respiration rates at three soil warming experiments at Harvard Forest, USA, and found decreases in metabolic capacity for roots from the heated plots. This decline could be due to either physiological acclimation or to the effects of co-occurring drier soils on the measurement date. Regardless of the cause, these findings clearly suggest that modeling efforts that allow root respiration to increase exponentially with temperature, with Q10 values of 2 or more, may over-predict root contributions to ecosystem CO2 efflux for future climates and underestimate the amount of C available for other uses, including net primary productivity.展开更多
The battery thermal management of electric vehicles can be improved using neural networks predicting quantile sequences of the battery temperature.This work extends a method for the development of Quantile Convolution...The battery thermal management of electric vehicles can be improved using neural networks predicting quantile sequences of the battery temperature.This work extends a method for the development of Quantile Convolutional and Quantile Recurrent Neural Networks(namely Q*NN).Fleet data of 225629 drives are clustered and balanced,simulation data from 971 simulations are augmented before they are combined for training and testing.The Q*NN hyperparameters are optimized using an efficient Bayesian optimization,before the Q*NN models are compared with regression and quantile regression models for four horizons.The analysis of point-forecast and quantile-related metrics shows the superior performance of the novel Q*NN models.The median predictions of the best performing model achieve an average RMSE of 0.66°C and R^(2) of 0.84.The predicted 0.99 quantile covers 98.87%of the true values in the test data.In conclusion,this work proposes an extended development and comparison of Q*NN models for accurate battery temperature prediction.展开更多
The demand for lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)is driven largely by their use in electric vehicles,which is projected to increase dramatically in the future.This great success,however,urgently calls for the efficient recyc...The demand for lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)is driven largely by their use in electric vehicles,which is projected to increase dramatically in the future.This great success,however,urgently calls for the efficient recycling of LIBs at the end of their life.Herein,we describe a froth flotation-based process to recycle graphite—the predominant active material for the negative electrode—from spent LIBs and investigate its reuse in newly assembled LIBs.It has been found that the structure and morphology of the recycled graphite are essentially unchanged compared to pristine commercial anode-grade graphite,and despite some minor impurities from the recycling process,the recycled graphite provides a remarkable reversible specific capacity of more than 350 mAh g^(−1).Even more importantly,newly assembled graphite‖NMC532 cells show excellent cycling stability with a capacity retention of 80%after 1000 cycles,that is,comparable to the performance of reference full cells comprising pristine commercial graphite.展开更多
We aimed to determine short-term patient-reported outcomes in men having general anesthetic transperineal (TP) prostate biopsies. A prospective cohort study was performed in men having a diagnostic TP biopsy. This w...We aimed to determine short-term patient-reported outcomes in men having general anesthetic transperineal (TP) prostate biopsies. A prospective cohort study was performed in men having a diagnostic TP biopsy. This was done using a validated and adapted questionnaire immediately post-biopsy and at follow-up of between 7 and 14 days across three tertiary referral hospitals with a response rate of 51.6%. Immediately after biopsy 43/201 (21.4%) of men felt light-headed, syncopal, or suffered syncope. Fifty-three percent of men felt discomfort after biopsy (with 95% scoring 〈5 in a 0-10 scale). Twelve out of 196 men (6.1%) felt pain immediately after the procedure. Despite a high incidence of symptoms (e.g., up to 75% had some hematuria, 47% suffered some pain), it was not a moderate or serious problem for most, apart from hemoejaculate which 31 men suffered. Eleven men needed catheterization (5.5%). There were no inpatient admissions due to complications (hematuria, sepsis). On repeat questioning at a later time point, only 25/199 (12.6%) of men said repeat biopsy would be a significant problem despite a significant and marked reduction in erectile function after the procedure. From this study, we conclude that TP biopsy is well tolerated with similar side effect profiles and attitudes of men to repeat biopsy to men having TRUS biopsies. These data allow informed counseling of men prior to TP biopsy and a benchmark for tolerability with local anesthetic TP biopsies being developed for clinical use.展开更多

Heterogeneous data,different definitions and incompatible models are a huge problem in many domains,with no exception for the field of energy systems analysis.Hence,it is hard to re-use results,compare model results o...Heterogeneous data,different definitions and incompatible models are a huge problem in many domains,with no exception for the field of energy systems analysis.Hence,it is hard to re-use results,compare model results or couple models at all.Ontologies provide a precisely defined vocabulary to build a common and shared conceptu-alisation of the energy domain.Here,we present the Open Energy Ontology(OEO)developed for the domain of energy systems analysis.Using the OEO provides several benefits for the community.First,it enables consistent annotation of large amounts of data from various research projects.One example is the Open Energy Platform(OEP).Adding such annotations makes data semantically searchable,exchangeable,re-usable and interoperable.Second,computational model coupling becomes much easier.The advantages of using an ontology such as the OEO are demonstrated with three use cases:data representation,data annotation and interface homogenisation.We also describe how the ontology can be used for linked open data(LOD).展开更多

While the...The BRAIN project recently announced by the president Obama is the reflection of unrelenting human quest for cracking the brain code, the patterns of neuronal activity that define who we are and what we are. While the Brain Activity Mapping proposal has rightly emphasized on the need to develop new technologies for measuring every spike from every neuron, it might be helpful to consider both the theoretical and experimental aspects that would accelerate our search for the organizing principles of the brain code. Here we share several insights and lessons from the similar proposal, namely, Brain Decoding Project that we initiated since 2007. We provide a specific example in our initial mapping of real-time memory traces from one part of the memory circuit, namely, the CA1 region of the mouse hippocampus. We show how innovative behavioral tasks and appropriate mathematical analyses of large datasets can play equally, if not more, important roles in uncovering the specific-to-general feature-coding cell assembly mechanism by which episodic memory, semantic knowledge, and imagination are generated and organized. Our own experiences suggest that the bottleneck of the Brain Project is not only at merely developing additional new technologies, but also the lack of efficient avenues to disseminate cutting edge platforms and decoding expertise to neuroscience community. Therefore, we propose that in order to harness unique insights and extensive knowledge from various investigators working in diverse neuroscience subfields, ranging from perception and emotion to memory and social behaviors, the BRAIN project should create a set of International and National Brain Decoding Centers at which cutting-edge recording technologies and expertise on analyzing large datasets analyses can be made readily available to the entire community of neuroscientists who can apply and schedule to perform cutting-edge research.展开更多

The design of new specific SL analogs is a challenging goal in understanding the basic plant biology and is also useful to control plant architectures without favoring the development of parasitic plants. Two different molecules (23 (3'-methyI-GR24), 31 (thia-3'-methyl-debranone-like molecule)) already described, and a new one (AR36), for which the synthesis is presented, are biologically compared with the well-known GR24 and the recently identified CISA-1. These different structures emphasize the wide range of parts attached to the D-ring for the bioactivity as a plant hormone. These new compounds possess a common dimethylbutenolide motif but their structure varies in the ABC part of the molecules: 23 has the same ABC part as GR24, while 31 and AR36 carry, respectively, an aromatic ring and an acyclic carbon chain. Detailed information is given for the bioactivity of such derivatives in strigolactone synthesis or in perception mutant plants (pea rmsl and rms4, Arabidopsis max2 and, max4) for different hormonal functions along with their action in the rhizosphere on arbuscular mycorrhizal hyphal growth and parasitic weed germination.展开更多
Microfluidics is becoming a technology of growing interest for building microphysiological systems with integrated read-out functionalities.Here we present the integration of enzyme-based multi-analyte biosensors into...Microfluidics is becoming a technology of growing interest for building microphysiological systems with integrated read-out functionalities.Here we present the integration of enzyme-based multi-analyte biosensors into a multi-tissue culture platform for‘body-on-a-chip’applications.The microfluidic platform is based on the technology of hanging-drop networks,which is designed for the formation,cultivation,and analysis of fluidically interconnected organotypic spherical three-dimensional(3D)microtissues of multiple cell types.The sensor modules were designed as small glass plug-ins featuring four platinum working electrodes,a platinum counter electrode,and an Ag/AgCl reference electrode.They were placed directly into the ceiling substrate from which the hanging drops that host the spheroid cultures are suspended.The electrodes were functionalized with oxidase enzymes to enable continuous monitoring of lactate and glucose through amperometry.The biosensors featured high sensitivities of 322±41 nA mM^(−1) mm^(−2) for glucose and 443±37 nA mM^(−1) mm^(−2) for lactate;the corresponding limits of detection were below 10μM.The proposed technology enabled tissue-size-dependent,real-time detection of lactate secretion from single human colon cancer microtissues cultured in the hanging drops.Furthermore,glucose consumption and lactate secretion were monitored in parallel,and the impact of different culture conditions on the metabolism of cancer microtissues was recorded in real-time.展开更多
High-resolution observations of high-redshift(z > 4) radio quasars offer a unique insight into jet kinematics at early cosmological epochs, as well as constraints on cosmological model parameters.Due to the general...High-resolution observations of high-redshift(z > 4) radio quasars offer a unique insight into jet kinematics at early cosmological epochs, as well as constraints on cosmological model parameters.Due to the general weakness of extremely distant objects and the apparently slow structural changes caused by cosmological time dilation, only a couple of high-redshift quasars(HRQs) have been studied with parsec-scale resolutions, and with limited number of observing epochs. Here we report on very long baseline interferometry(VLBI) observations of a high-redshift blazar J1430 + 4204(z=4.72) in the 8 GHz frequency band at five different epochs spanning 22 years. The source shows a compact core–jet structure with two jet components being identified within 3 milli-arcsecond(mas) scale. The long time span and multiple-epoch data allow for the kinematic studies of the jet components. That results in a jet proper motion of μ(J1) = 0.017 ± 0.002 mas a^-1 and μ(J2) = 0.156 ± 0.015 mas a^-1, respectively. For the fastest-moving outer jet component J2, the corresponding apparent transverse speed is (19.5 ± 1.9) c.The inferred bulk jet Lorentz factor C=14.6 ± 3.8 and viewing angle θ=2.2°± 1.6°indicate highly relativistic beaming. The Lorentz factor and apparent proper motion are the highest measured to date among the z > 4 jetted radio sources, while the jet kinematics is still consistent with the cosmological interpretation of quasar redshifts.展开更多

Background:Retention forestry is a management strategy aiming to mitigate biodiversity loss by retaining structural elements such as dead trees that would otherwise be removed.Here we analyze the biomass,diversity and...Background:Retention forestry is a management strategy aiming to mitigate biodiversity loss by retaining structural elements such as dead trees that would otherwise be removed.Here we analyze the biomass,diversity and abundance among forest beetles collected using window traps on 1281-ha forest sites reflecting gradients in the amount of structural elements in southwestern Germany.Results:We found that beetle biomass increased with mean diameter at breast height(a measure of tree size),and decreased with stand structural complexity.Biomass of individual feeding guilds responded differently to forest structural elements,namely lying deadwood,understory complexity,tree basal area and stand structural complexity.Beetle family diversity increased with the effective number of layers,i.e.1-m forest strata occupied by vegetation assessed via terrestrial laser scanning.Abundance of feeding guilds responded to only elevation and share of deciduous trees.Community composition in terms of biomass was structured by forest elements similar to biomass of individual feeding guilds,with the addition of lying deadwood.This differed from community composition in terms of abundance of feeding guilds,which was structured by primarily standing deadwood volume and share of deciduous trees.Conclusions:Our results show that biomass,diversity and abundance respond differently to forest structural elements.This suggests that the concurrent prioritization of multiple forest elements is needed to promote forest beetles,with more focus placed on the differing resource needs among feeding guilds.In addition,retention strategies should also consider the varying responses of beetle biodiversity metrics when assessing the importance of forest structural elements.展开更多

Therefore, the road infrastructure must be moni- tored comprehensively and in regular int...The condition of the road infrastructure has severe impacts on the road safety, driving comfort, and on the rolling resistance. Therefore, the road infrastructure must be moni- tored comprehensively and in regular intervals to identify damaged road segments and road hazards. Methods have been developed to comprehensively and automatically digitize the road infrastructure and estimate the road quality, which are based on vehicle sensors and a supervised machine learning classification. Since different types of vehicles have various suspension systems with different response functions, one classifier cannot be taken over to other vehicles. Usually, a high amount of time is needed to acquire training data for each individual vehicle and classifier. To address this problem, the methods to collect training data automatically for new vehicles based on the comparison of trajectories of untrained and trained vehicles have been developed. The results show that the method based on a k-dimensional tree and Euclidean distance performs best and is robust in transferring the information of the road surface from one vehicle to another. Furthermore, this method offers the possibility to merge the output and road infrastructure information from multiple vehicles to enable a more robust and precise prediction of the ground truth.展开更多

Regardless of the cause, these findings clearly suggest that modeling efforts that allow root respiration to increase exponentially with temperature, with Q10 values of 2 or more, may over-predict root contributions to ecosystem CO2 efflux for future climates and underestimate the amount of C available for other uses, including net primary productivity.

文摘The battery thermal management of electric vehicles can be improved using neural networks predicting quantile sequences of the battery temperature.This work extends a method for the development of Quantile Convolutional and Quantile Recurrent Neural Networks(namely Q*NN).Fleet data of 225629 drives are clustered and balanced,simulation data from 971 simulations are augmented before they are combined for training and testing.The Q*NN hyperparameters are optimized using an efficient Bayesian optimization,before the Q*NN models are compared with regression and quantile regression models for four horizons.The analysis of point-forecast and quantile-related metrics shows the superior performance of the novel Q*NN models.The median predictions of the best performing model achieve an average RMSE of 0.66°C and R^(2) of 0.84.The predicted 0.99 quantile covers 98.87%of the true values in the test data.In conclusion,this work proposes an extended development and comparison of Q*NN models for accurate battery temperature prediction.

文摘The demand for lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)is driven largely by their use in electric vehicles,which is projected to increase dramatically in the future.This great success,however,urgently calls for the efficient recycling of LIBs at the end of their life.Herein,we describe a froth flotation-based process to recycle graphite—the predominant active material for the negative electrode—from spent LIBs and investigate its reuse in newly assembled LIBs.It has been found that the structure and morphology of the recycled graphite are essentially unchanged compared to pristine commercial anode-grade graphite,and despite some minor impurities from the recycling process,the recycled graphite provides a remarkable reversible specific capacity of more than 350 mAh g^(−1).Even more importantly,newly assembled graphite‖NMC532 cells show excellent cycling stability with a capacity retention of 80%after 1000 cycles,that is,comparable to the performance of reference full cells comprising pristine commercial graphite.
文摘We aimed to determine short-term patient-reported outcomes in men having general anesthetic transperineal (TP) prostate biopsies. A prospective cohort study was performed in men having a diagnostic TP biopsy. This was done using a validated and adapted questionnaire immediately post-biopsy and at follow-up of between 7 and 14 days across three tertiary referral hospitals with a response rate of 51.6%. Immediately after biopsy 43/201 (21.4%) of men felt light-headed, syncopal, or suffered syncope. Fifty-three percent of men felt discomfort after biopsy (with 95% scoring 〈5 in a 0-10 scale). Twelve out of 196 men (6.1%) felt pain immediately after the procedure. Despite a high incidence of symptoms (e.g., up to 75% had some hematuria, 47% suffered some pain), it was not a moderate or serious problem for most, apart from hemoejaculate which 31 men suffered. Eleven men needed catheterization (5.5%). There were no inpatient admissions due to complications (hematuria, sepsis). On repeat questioning at a later time point, only 25/199 (12.6%) of men said repeat biopsy would be a significant problem despite a significant and marked reduction in erectile function after the procedure. From this study, we conclude that TP biopsy is well tolerated with similar side effect profiles and attitudes of men to repeat biopsy to men having TRUS biopsies. These data allow informed counseling of men prior to TP biopsy and a benchmark for tolerability with local anesthetic TP biopsies being developed for clinical use.
文摘In this paper we explore the preconditions and requirements in order to enable the renewal of the vehicle fleet towards e-cars without weakening eco-mobility(public transport,biking,walking).We follow a linked approach of arranging charging infrastructure and regulating the parking spaces.We analyze the results of this approach by modeling different scenarios for the case study city of Vienna with the LUTI(land-use transport interaction)model MARS(Metropolitan Activity Relocation Simulator).Four different policy scenarios are modeled and the results compared.We look at changes in transport behavior(modal split and vehicle kilometers),the emissions and the impact on public transport ridership.

文摘Heterogeneous data,different definitions and incompatible models are a huge problem in many domains,with no exception for the field of energy systems analysis.Hence,it is hard to re-use results,compare model results or couple models at all.Ontologies provide a precisely defined vocabulary to build a common and shared conceptu-alisation of the energy domain.Here,we present the Open Energy Ontology(OEO)developed for the domain of energy systems analysis.Using the OEO provides several benefits for the community.First,it enables consistent annotation of large amounts of data from various research projects.One example is the Open Energy Platform(OEP).Adding such annotations makes data semantically searchable,exchangeable,re-usable and interoperable.Second,computational model coupling becomes much easier.The advantages of using an ontology such as the OEO are demonstrated with three use cases:data representation,data annotation and interface homogenisation.We also describe how the ontology can be used for linked open data(LOD).

文摘The BRAIN project recently announced by the president Obama is the reflection of unrelenting human quest for cracking the brain code, the patterns of neuronal activity that define who we are and what we are. While the Brain Activity Mapping proposal has rightly emphasized on the need to develop new technologies for measuring every spike from every neuron, it might be helpful to consider both the theoretical and experimental aspects that would accelerate our search for the organizing principles of the brain code. Here we share several insights and lessons from the similar proposal, namely, Brain Decoding Project that we initiated since 2007. We provide a specific example in our initial mapping of real-time memory traces from one part of the memory circuit, namely, the CA1 region of the mouse hippocampus. We show how innovative behavioral tasks and appropriate mathematical analyses of large datasets can play equally, if not more, important roles in uncovering the specific-to-general feature-coding cell assembly mechanism by which episodic memory, semantic knowledge, and imagination are generated and organized. Our own experiences suggest that the bottleneck of the Brain Project is not only at merely developing additional new technologies, but also the lack of efficient avenues to disseminate cutting edge platforms and decoding expertise to neuroscience community. Therefore, we propose that in order to harness unique insights and extensive knowledge from various investigators working in diverse neuroscience subfields, ranging from perception and emotion to memory and social behaviors, the BRAIN project should create a set of International and National Brain Decoding Centers at which cutting-edge recording technologies and expertise on analyzing large datasets analyses can be made readily available to the entire community of neuroscientists who can apply and schedule to perform cutting-edge research.
文摘Strigolactones (SLs) are known not only as plant hormones, but also as rhizosphere signals for establishing symbiotic and parasitic interactions. The design of new specific SL analogs is a challenging goal in understanding the basic plant biology and is also useful to control plant architectures without favoring the development of parasitic plants. Two different molecules (23 (3'-methyI-GR24), 31 (thia-3'-methyl-debranone-like molecule)) already described, and a new one (AR36), for which the synthesis is presented, are biologically compared with the well-known GR24 and the recently identified CISA-1. These different structures emphasize the wide range of parts attached to the D-ring for the bioactivity as a plant hormone. These new compounds possess a common dimethylbutenolide motif but their structure varies in the ABC part of the molecules: 23 has the same ABC part as GR24, while 31 and AR36 carry, respectively, an aromatic ring and an acyclic carbon chain. Detailed information is given for the bioactivity of such derivatives in strigolactone synthesis or in perception mutant plants (pea rmsl and rms4, Arabidopsis max2 and, max4) for different hormonal functions along with their action in the rhizosphere on arbuscular mycorrhizal hyphal growth and parasitic weed germination.

文摘Microfluidics is becoming a technology of growing interest for building microphysiological systems with integrated read-out functionalities.Here we present the integration of enzyme-based multi-analyte biosensors into a multi-tissue culture platform for‘body-on-a-chip’applications.The microfluidic platform is based on the technology of hanging-drop networks,which is designed for the formation,cultivation,and analysis of fluidically interconnected organotypic spherical three-dimensional(3D)microtissues of multiple cell types.The sensor modules were designed as small glass plug-ins featuring four platinum working electrodes,a platinum counter electrode,and an Ag/AgCl reference electrode.They were placed directly into the ceiling substrate from which the hanging drops that host the spheroid cultures are suspended.The electrodes were functionalized with oxidase enzymes to enable continuous monitoring of lactate and glucose through amperometry.The biosensors featured high sensitivities of 322±41 nA mM^(−1) mm^(−2) for glucose and 443±37 nA mM^(−1) mm^(−2) for lactate;the corresponding limits of detection were below 10μM.The proposed technology enabled tissue-size-dependent,real-time detection of lactate secretion from single human colon cancer microtissues cultured in the hanging drops.Furthermore,glucose consumption and lactate secretion were monitored in parallel,and the impact of different culture conditions on the metabolism of cancer microtissues was recorded in real-time.

文摘High-resolution observations of high-redshift(z > 4) radio quasars offer a unique insight into jet kinematics at early cosmological epochs, as well as constraints on cosmological model parameters.Due to the general weakness of extremely distant objects and the apparently slow structural changes caused by cosmological time dilation, only a couple of high-redshift quasars(HRQs) have been studied with parsec-scale resolutions, and with limited number of observing epochs. Here we report on very long baseline interferometry(VLBI) observations of a high-redshift blazar J1430 + 4204(z=4.72) in the 8 GHz frequency band at five different epochs spanning 22 years. The source shows a compact core–jet structure with two jet components being identified within 3 milli-arcsecond(mas) scale. The long time span and multiple-epoch data allow for the kinematic studies of the jet components. That results in a jet proper motion of μ(J1) = 0.017 ± 0.002 mas a^-1 and μ(J2) = 0.156 ± 0.015 mas a^-1, respectively. For the fastest-moving outer jet component J2, the corresponding apparent transverse speed is (19.5 ± 1.9) c.The inferred bulk jet Lorentz factor C=14.6 ± 3.8 and viewing angle θ=2.2°± 1.6°indicate highly relativistic beaming. The Lorentz factor and apparent proper motion are the highest measured to date among the z > 4 jetted radio sources, while the jet kinematics is still consistent with the cosmological interpretation of quasar redshifts.

文摘From April to July 2018,a data sample at the peak energy of the T(4 S) resonance was collected with the Belle Ⅱ detector at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider.This is the first data sample of the Belle Ⅱ experiment.Using Bhabha and digamma events,we measure the integrated luminosity of the data sample to be(496.3±0.3±3.0) pb-1,where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.This work provides a basis for future luminosity measurements at Belle Ⅱ.

文摘Background:Retention forestry is a management strategy aiming to mitigate biodiversity loss by retaining structural elements such as dead trees that would otherwise be removed.Here we analyze the biomass,diversity and abundance among forest beetles collected using window traps on 1281-ha forest sites reflecting gradients in the amount of structural elements in southwestern Germany.Results:We found that beetle biomass increased with mean diameter at breast height(a measure of tree size),and decreased with stand structural complexity.Biomass of individual feeding guilds responded differently to forest structural elements,namely lying deadwood,understory complexity,tree basal area and stand structural complexity.Beetle family diversity increased with the effective number of layers,i.e.1-m forest strata occupied by vegetation assessed via terrestrial laser scanning.Abundance of feeding guilds responded to only elevation and share of deciduous trees.Community composition in terms of biomass was structured by forest elements similar to biomass of individual feeding guilds,with the addition of lying deadwood.This differed from community composition in terms of abundance of feeding guilds,which was structured by primarily standing deadwood volume and share of deciduous trees.Conclusions:Our results show that biomass,diversity and abundance respond differently to forest structural elements.This suggests that the concurrent prioritization of multiple forest elements is needed to promote forest beetles,with more focus placed on the differing resource needs among feeding guilds.In addition,retention strategies should also consider the varying responses of beetle biodiversity metrics when assessing the importance of forest structural elements.

文摘The condition of the road infrastructure has severe impacts on the road safety, driving comfort, and on the rolling resistance. Therefore, the road infrastructure must be moni- tored comprehensively and in regular intervals to identify damaged road segments and road hazards. Methods have been developed to comprehensively and automatically digitize the road infrastructure and estimate the road quality, which are based on vehicle sensors and a supervised machine learning classification. Since different types of vehicles have various suspension systems with different response functions, one classifier cannot be taken over to other vehicles. Usually, a high amount of time is needed to acquire training data for each individual vehicle and classifier. To address this problem, the methods to collect training data automatically for new vehicles based on the comparison of trajectories of untrained and trained vehicles have been developed. The results show that the method based on a k-dimensional tree and Euclidean distance performs best and is robust in transferring the information of the road surface from one vehicle to another. Furthermore, this method offers the possibility to merge the output and road infrastructure information from multiple vehicles to enable a more robust and precise prediction of the ground truth.
