It was later found that the cotton seed oil contains a kind of phenolic compounds called gossypol. Experimental studies in laboratory animals and clinical trials in human males have since been conducted in many scientific institutions and hospitals. In men, it has been found that the gossypol is able to inhibit the motility of sperm, disrupt the structure of spermatozoa and arrest spermatogenesis. Clinic reports show that the gossypol could induce hypokalemia myasthenia in some of the patients, but its itiology remains unknown.
