Hamlet, one of the greatest tragedies of Shakespeare, is a shining star in the drama literary world. Hyperbole, as a figure of exaggeration, is an important figure of Shakespeare’s rhetorical devices. However, the study of hyperbole in Hamlet has not been paid much attention to by the scholars in China. This paper studies the use of hyperbole in Hamlet, analyzes the translation referring to nouns, adjectives, quantifiers, negative words and parallelism in the hyperbole of corresponding Chinese translation versions of Zhu Shenghao, Liang Shiqiu, Sun Dayu and Bian Zhilin, to discuss the translators’ translation characteristics. The translation of Bian Zhilin is the best among the four outstanding versions. To create good translation of hyperbole, be it literal or free, one needs to get full knowledge of the rhetorical differences between China and west, and seek the best way to balance and express them.
