摘要
此文从中西两种文化的视角阐释莎士比亚《哈姆雷特》中的Tobe,ornottobe一句:对哈姆雷特来说,这是对生死问题的根本追问,他无法以生死以外的答案回答这个问题,因为他“定在”于一个完全不同的现实世界。但在中国古典语言和文化的视域中,此句另有解释的根本,即是说中国传统的性命之学将生死问题与天道联系在一起,因此答案也将与哈姆雷特的迥异。
The present paper makes a double-visioned interpretation of “To be, or not to be—that is the question” from a Chinese perspective. This line seems difficult and even untranslatable, both linguistically and culturally, to Chinese readers, who, embedded in a different cultural reality, are wont to regard life as composed of Xing (spirit or moral life) and Ming (body or material life). For them, both body and spirit are borrowed ultimately from Tian (Nature). Human beings are responsible for managing them well and are supposed to return them intact after having traveled through their one-off life. For this reason, they do not care about questions such as after-life, soul, immortality and damnation. They are however “the question” for Hamlet, ineluctable and inexplicable as a result of a different outlook on life, which in turn predestines his tragic fate.
